Funny thing is that we all know that the Ping Anser is the Grand Daddy of a lot of current putters. In a nut shell - all that's really changed is the metal it's made of and many are now milled instead of cast.

Its not the headshape that makes them stay with those old Ping Ansers, but rather the manganese bronze material that Karsten used to make them with.

Manganese Bronze has a unique jkind of soft feel to it that some players become addicted to. In fact so addicted, to that when they try to change to a stainless steel or another material putter, they struggle with distance control and go back to manganese bronze.

Of course that nice brown patina that the old manganese bronze Ping putters take on when they age is kind of nice too!

I still have a few in my collection that I get out every now and again. Ive used nearly every Scotty ever made and still end up with a mang br anser in the bag.

Would be great if Scotty made a newport with a soundslot (not the newport beach style slot - Ive already got one of those!) in carbon steel for retail. No gimmicks just a plain solid putter.

I got an Anser4 milled for Christmas two years ago. I still have/use the Anser 4 I got I don't know when how many years ago. Love to see ole Scotty make an original head.LOL

That is a really cool story how he is using his mom's putter. I love the look of the manganese and I am now starting a rotten habit of collecting ansers. I am looking forward doing some cool stuff to make them my own. Thanks for posting this link.

Agreed, I'd like to see the refurb job Ping did for him. I reckon it's a 300g head weight, so maybe taken up to 340g. He's still near the top of the leader board, it would be a great story, even though I'm one who is into technology.

Have the anser putters changed much since the 80's? Is it a different steel?
Is there a style?

A good quality putter that fits you does not have to be new. If you can putt, you can putt with old or
new.

Saw some pics online - it is an old original Mag Bronze Ping Anser with Tungsten weights added within the face...

I think Chris Riley has had one in the bag for the majority of his career. He started tinkering with mallets the last few years, but I read an article about how he was going to commit to his old Anser. I met him back in 2007 at a chairty tournament put on by David Toms in Shreveport, and he had the same treatment that D.A. does, tungsten plugs in the sole.
