Alright I need help I want to get my dad a great new driver for fathers day. His swing has really slowed an he is in his late 60's so I want to get him something with an extremely hot face and yes illegal heads are fine if it helps him. I have been looking at the .com, no brainer, sooo long and don't know which way to turn. So what have you guys had success with or maybe know of someone that's had great success with something. My dad swing around 80 right now with his driver and hits 10.5 with a senior shaft, still swings quickly through not a smooth swing, needs a shaft with high launch, his misses are a slice. I think that's about it please let me know a great head and shaft for old timers. THANKS

I'd probably just tell him to give up golf with an 80 mph swing, I can swing higher than 80 with one arm. I don't see how golf would be much fun with that slow of a swing.
Was that necessary? Get lost.

To the OP, I have no suggestions for you really, other than a higher lofted soft shaft, which is what you already mentioned. Best of luck getting a good club for pops. Wish my dad played golf.

+1 on Surfinturf's suggestion. My own suggestion is to go find an old Callaway ERC II driver (very hot face, very nonconforming). I just saw one in the discount bin at Roger Dunn yesterday. Put something like a 55 gram Aldila NVS shaft on it (A flex) and call it done. As far as golf not being fun if you swing slow, here is a story: My home course is Dad Miller in Anaheim. H.G. "Dad" Miller went door to door in the 1950's to raise money for the municipal bond issue to build the course. Sometime in the early 1990's, when he was 91 years old, he made a hole in one on a one hundred yard par three hole -- with a five wood. When he passed on, they took down the signs that said "Anaheim Municipal" and named the course after him.

So tell your dad to keep playing. You're never too old.

Funny thing is that the guy with the 80mph swing speed can probably beat you on the real course.

Who needs practice? Wait, we all need it

My suggestion would be a Wishon 959 OL. It has a high COR face which does not conform but it will give him some extra distance.
His misses are a slice so get a closed face angle.
Not a smooth swing and may stop short of parallel. He may do better in something a little stiffer not softer. From what I've seen short quick swings do better in slightly stiffer shafts.

i totally agree with Golf Shaft member ..i experimented myself with this slow speed steady swing a Cobra Amp cell smart pad E 9 with a fujikura fuel light stock shaft ,I needed a stiff exceptionally with cobra stock ,and I had a huge numbers of ball speed and carry ,wich I could not have with, any other Callaway or Cleveland even ping g25 with stock was lower but with better dispersion. My next option is to find a 50 fuel Fuji .I am 55 and I play very solid and accurate desirable shots believe me.I play a set of old Call VFT irons and I place it wherever I want with a 75 adscending mass Callaway stock shaft .aerodynamics and new nano stuff can do magics if fitted properly.
So it really tells me that a stock fuel 50 stiff would probably be great with a little less dispersion such I had with Cobra..but light weight is defenitly something I should look at.And boys ,oh boys be aware of old Shark they sometimes
makes you swallow your tongue.I don't think I could beat, any of olddest
alive tour PGA pros even if they are fitted with ultra light shaft,in the
today's market light does not mean soft at all..

i'm 76 yrs old , usga 9.3 , shoot my age ever now and then , driver is a mizuno jpx 825 with a grafalloy pro launch platium reg flex , shaft not cut , driver length 47 3/4 in , avg driver total distance 235 -250 yds .

get your dad to open up his stance , open hips and shoulders , sort of like fred couples , put the ball about 1 inch out side left toe , then swing away . it will work for him , use open stance on all clubs , makes the game much easier and less chance of back problems .

get your dad some good wedges/putter and practice a lot , 100 yds and in . good wedges are very important , i use scratch wedges 44-48-52-56 .

i would add , i carry 2 woods , driver and a tm rocketballz 7 wood stage 1 ( 1 in over ) avg distance 185-200 yds , with a senior shaft , also 6-7-8-9 callaway diablo edge irons , putter is a odyssey white ice 2 ball f7 .

all irons are i inch over .
No offense but that's a terrible idea. A 46" length driver will cause accuracy issues and make it harder to hit the center off the face...

OP ...Have him fitted by a club builder. The builder will use his angle of attack, swing speed, launch angle and decent angle to find the loft that he needs for optimal carry.

In all honesty having the correct fitting specs for his swing out weighs the design of the driver.

If he has a perfect fit you won't be dissapointed.

Good luck and I hope that helps...Kadin

Hey, ProV1xBallBuster, one day you'll be 88 years old (if fate is kind to you, that is) and you'll need both arms to swing your clubs, so be nice.

My 88 year old father-in-law is an avid golfer and his SS has dropped to around an 80, but he plays regularly with my wife and me. I recently got my wife a new Bio Cell driver with a stock senior shaft so she gave her dad her one year old Amp Cell driver (also with stock senior shaft) to try out on the range. He was nailing it so we gave it to him. He loves it and is hitting his drives down the middle with great accuracy. His excitement for the game has returned, and this will keep his spirits high for another round. Lots of great drivers out there, but my FIL loves the Cobra! Suggestion of the ZL Encore above is also spot-on. I play with one when my swing is off and I just need to get the ball in the FW. Very forgiving and long, but my G20 is my go-to driver for most days. Good luck, OP. Many happy wishes to your dad on Father's Day.

Absolutely NO reason to give up golf with a swing speed of 80mph. Working in the industry you will soon know average club head speed for an average golfer is only in the mid 90s, plus you dont see anyone kicking juniors or ladies out of the game. To the Gentleman who can swing 80 one hand, it doesnt say anywhere on the score card how fast you swing.

These days companies are making it so much easier to keep up with the big hitters with the range of lighter weight shafts. Id personally suggest something like the Wilson Staff D100, Cleveland altitude or even Ping G25 (although may need different shaft, possibly Project X's lighweight as i believe its an option). Just want something to get his Launch up in the 15 to 18 degree and with out having his spin rate go any higher then the low 3000s.

Agreed...unless you're swinging 140 and hitting 4 bills I don't see how golf can be fun. See what I did there? I can get up well over 80 with 1 arm left or right but I'm not saying give up the game because one only swings 80. Say the person was a double amputee of their legs...would you still feel the same? Is the baseline for you 100+ or you should quit golf? Would it then be fair for everyone that is a better handicap than you to say you should quit because you don't meet handicap standards and there is no way he can enjoy himself?

Good leveling out there ,golf is a combination of ability,temper,etc.......etc.....etc....,mastering golf games , is almost impossible,Tour Pros, will always be respecfull to men's like Moe Norman's ,because they know how long and hardworks and mistakes it takes to beat those courses,I doubt that many of us have cried finishing a tournement, it's a game that reminds all of us ,from the youngest to the oldest ,to be humble and modest at the time, that's warn golf is all about,Golf is a 4 letter words like Love!

I am 76 and my driver speed is 85 and I have tried a bunch of drivers.. I have a ben Hogan, 10.5 reg flex Aida nv 65 and hit it very good, it must be the shaft and you could probably could find one on ebay for less than 100 bucks..also check Giga golf as they have a efit system on there site which helps you with fitting a club ..

Honestly Pingeyeone, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, there probably isn’t to many clubs that would help much in distance, there are some to help the slice but a couple of lesson would probably help him more than anything. I’m 66 and I got a couple of tips from a pro that completely turned my drives around.

I use a Taylormade Jetspeed 10.5 and adjusted it to lower loft. The higher was more accurate but after those tips I lowered it and playing with a slight draw. I have a friend that has a Callaway X2 Hot driver in his early 60’s and LOVES it.

If he’s been playing for a few years he’ll pick up those tips pretty quick…..that would be my suggesting pulse some low compression balls, like 60 compression……

Good luck

REALLY!?! That was just plain ignorant!!
so my top 8 year old with a 60mph golfswing should give it up. i have a 90 mph, down from 115 when i wasw a professional fighter, i guess i should give it up also, what was i thinking having all that fun on the golf course winning those parent child tournaments this past summer. silly of me.

I think it's already been said, but I want to confirm that it might be wise, considering your dad's swing type, to go to a stiffer shaft rather than lighter flex. And it's not just his swing type, it's his speed...80mph is, in my opinion, at the front edge of regular flex anyway, so it, combined with his transition type, would suggest, to me, a stiffer flex with a lower bend point perhaps and a soft tip. Unless he already hits the ball high, I would suggest 12* of loft as well, along with a lower spinning soft ball.
As an aside, it's good to see the outrage directed toward v1xballbuster. He earned it.
