I live in south Florida. I've seen probably about 2-3 dozen gators while playing golf. Most are less than 8 feet. Pretty much all of them were in the water. I've seen a few that were just chilling on the bank of a lake/canal.

Definitely not an uncommon sight here considering to the west of my town is nothing but the Everglades until you get to the west coast.

I've been paired with golfers who are amazed or sometimes really scared when they see one.

Worked down in Florida this winter. Only saw them on one of our two courses. Not very big ones, maybe 6-8 feet at the most. I would see them on warmer days when the sun was out. Just posted up on the bank. Didnt want anything to do with people though. Saw more crocs and bigger ones at a course in South Carolina.

Living in Oregon, glad I don't have these things.

That said I've had a bear run out while I was on the tee box twice. (both in Whistler) and we had to wait 20 minutes once while a bear was dinking around in the fairway in Colorado.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about these being in the lakes here in NM. We just have to worry about the occasional rattle snake, which truly is pretty rare.

I'm from Pittsburgh, PA. I've only played a couple times in Florida. Never saw a gator or snake. I recall one course where the starter told me not to go after the ball outside the OB markers or in water. Hit a few OB's that day, I'm glad I listened to the guy.

On Sanibel Island they do have a saltwater croc on a course called The Dunes

It suns around the ninth green .. It is a 14 footer .. And it looks like a scary mofo .. I gave it a 30 yard berth when going past in a cart

FL is almost 100 percent gators and most places remove them after they get past eight feet

I live in Orlando and gators are very common on courses here. They would just leave if you get close to them. I think snakes are more dangerous around here. I did run into a few rattlesnakes and you don't want to get close to them!

Agreed. I live in Orlando as well. I've been in FL for over 25yrs and have only had to deal with a gator once near my ball. Snakes, on the other hand are a real danger. The course I love on has a lot of blind tee shots and the back nine is (as of now) undeveloped. It is not unusual for me to see deer or wild turkeys back there. Last summer I was playing one afternoon and had a good tee shot that went over a ridge across the fairway. When I crested the ridge in my cart I saw a ball in the middle of the fairway next to a small log. I thought my shot had gone farther but I drove on down to discover two things: 1 - that was not my ball and 2 - I understand why the previous golfer left it. That "log" was a fatty of a water moccasin. Those things a very aggressive! I gave it a wide berth and found my drive further on down the fairway.

Also, our 18th has water down the right side that also cuts in front of the green. This as bordered by large rocks. Apparently the mocs like to sun themselves on the rocks.

My best advice is to get one of those long retrieval poles or drop another ball if you can't find your first.

From a trip to Streamsong earlier this year--this guy was just sunning himself on the fairway. Good for me, since I was in the water!

i live in alabama and a local course has had bad alligator problems. On the greens, fairways and what not. Its gone now, but it can be a big issue.

Went to South Carolina and saw just as many as I did in Florida. They just stare at you waiting for you to do something stupid.
