Many courses have VERY high unaccompanied rates. You are paying for access, not really because the course is the greatest. It is pretty common to pay $500 or so all in for a top 100 course unaccompanied. If you are a member of a club with some creds get on Thousand Greens and start the request.

Why does this strike one as VERY high?

A round at Streamsong is ~$400+ all in. Same with Pinehurst. Same with Whistling Straits.

$500 feels pretty close to market - or even a bargain - for a “Top 100” private.

You are paying for unaccompanied access - small price to pay versus the guy who ponied up $250+K in initiation.

As for MPGC the Shore and Dunes courses are incredible and in my view the 2nd and 3rd best options after Cypress. $450 is FMV, $150 is robbery.

I have and do pay those fees for rounds, but $500 bucks is very steep for a round of golf. If you don't think it is VERY high go to your local public course and ask the first 10 people you run into if $500 bucks is market for a great course. It maybe worth it but we are talking about maybe 10 courses in the world who can charge $500 that are public. So worth it? To me yes, but still very high.

Fun course with beautiful views. Monterey prices are high in general. Unaccompanied fee is alittle steep, but I agree with previous thoughts expressed above on this subject.

It's all a matter of perspective. I agree that if you're looking at $500 for an unaccompanied round on a third-tier private course, it's a lot.

But specifically to MPCC, if you think about Golf Digest rankings as a value proxy (which is probably fair, given the demand that it creates) there are only a handful courses more highly ranked that are open to the public: Pebble Beach ($595+); Pacific Dunes ($325+); The Ocean Course ($400+); Whistling Straits ($410+); Pinehurst ($405+); Bandon Dunes ($325+); Bethpage Black ($150); Erin Hills ($300+); Spyglass ($395+); Sawgrass ($495); Old Macdonald ($325).

So $500 "all in" is not really out of line at all.

Private golf (in the United States) is expensive. It's a ridiculous luxury item, and not comparable to what gets paid at your typical muni. If you really want to be appalled, look at clubs 990 forms, and then divide their dues revenue by what you think they do for member rounds played (usually 10,000 - 15,000) to get to a $/round. I think you'll find it well north of $2,000/round in many "Top 100" clubs.

I have one of those situations and stopped thinking about it!!
