Scottish Highlands

Going to be in this area for 3-4 days at the beginning of October. Would like to get in two rounds. I really want to play Royal Dornoch but looking for recommendations. In reading, it seems like Castle Stuart and Nairn get great reviews. Any input appreciated.

played all three... i would rate them -

dornoch, Nairn, Castle stuart.

dornoch best all round...

Castle stuart is hard to loose a ball as it is so open but a fun round...

Nairn always had fun there... memories back to when i was 12 and dad used to take me there every October...

Nairn is very over rated in my opinion. Castle Stuart and Moray are well worth exploring.

Dornoch is fabulous. Couple of wee hidden gems in the area as well. Places such as

Actually have tee times for Dornoch and Castle Stuart. Looking forward to both. I wanted to try and hit one of the hidden gems but not sure if I'll have time and the wife is going. Just got done getting new rain gear. Can't wait to tee it up and hopefully the weather won't be too bad. If it's cold and rainy, it will make the whiskey even taste better.

Haven't had the chance to play Castle Stuart, but Dornoch is one of the best course ever made..
You definitely have to play Brora right after Dornoch, as it is a very unique experience just 20 min away for a fraction of the cost.

At Brora you have to move some goats and cows from the tee box before being able to tee off.. greens are protected by small fences..

For me the best courses in Scotland and probably in the world are Turnberry and Kingbarns though.

From the highlands if you are up for a few hours travel I would say the east coast ST andrews. Kings barns ,Carnoustie or trumps in Aberdeen

Dornoch, I would say Brora too. Not too far away is Moray Old and New (Lossiemouth) which are good courses.

I like the Moray courses, both Old and New.

If you want something very quirky try Cullen, short but sweet! At times it is like playing golf on Mars as you go over and around a large red rock right in the middle of the course! http://cullengolfclub.co.uk/

It's not in the same class as Castle Stuart and Dornoch but it is great fun, and thats what golf should be!
