Rifle 5.5 vs. S300 What to expect?

Thinking about replacing my S300 shafts with a set of flighted 5.5's I have laying around. What differences will I see between the two? Thanks for any insight.

Rifle 5.5 are softer and lighter, but not in a bad way. I actually really like rifle shafts. The flex does not play a lot softer but you can expect a smoother feel for sure. They don't feel super light either. I think the actual difference is about 10 grams. The flight will be a little higher also. S300 have a very stiff tip which keeps the flight lower. I have found dispersion and accuracy very good with 5.5's. S300 definitely feel harsher on misshits IMO.

Rifle flighted are a mix of softstepped/straight in/hardstepped shafts.

Rifle shafts are stiff butt, soft tip.
DG are soft butt, stiffer tip.

PX shafts will come out around 15-20 grams lighter.

OUtside of that, they are really two different shafts. Because of the butt difference, they are going to feel totally different to someone with a later release.

Project X 5.5 - FCM = 6.0 - It has a stiffer tip but weaker mid section so launchers high with low spin.
True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 - FCM = 5.8 - it has a weaker tip but stiffer mid section so launches low with high spin.

I wouldn't advise someone to use 5.5 flighted as the shorter irons are project 6.0 - the mid irons are 5.5 - the long irons are 5.0.
I think it isn't the best option unless you have a very good ball strike but slower swing speed.

He's asking about standard Rifle shafts, not the PX version.

The 5.5 will play softer than the S300. I had used these in Pings for a number of years and really liked them. As someone else mentioned, the dispersion is pretty good with these. They will launch higher than the S300 though but with the lighter weight I don't think you'll notice any distance loss.
You should try them. If they are Taper tip and you don't like them, ping me :)

I did talk about flighted as well. And the project X 5.5 is stiffer than the S300 i mentioned the FCM of the 2 shafts.

Thanks for all the input. I have a set of irons I practice with that have the Flighted 6.0's in them and after hearing the input I am gonna try to get the 5.5's in my gamers. Think this will def improve my game a bit.

Rifle shafts are different from Project X, even though some people refer to the later as Project X Rifle.

Rifle 5.5 has an FCM rating of 5.5, unlike Project X 5.5 is FCM 6.0.

Flighted PX and Rifle shafts play softer than the regular version. Flighted Rifle 5.5 is almost a regular flex, maybe R+.

BTW, I'm a big Rifle shaft fan and greatly prefer them to DG S300. Much lighter and better feel in my opinion.

Rifle 5.5 have an active tip section vs DGS300 stiff tip. Feel at impact will be a bit softer with 5.5, and trajectory should be higher, completely different shafts. I use to play standard Rifle 6.5's, before moving to PX 6.0's and some flighted back in "07".

Comparison:
DGS300 = 5.8FCM
DGX100 = 6.8FCM
PX5.5 = 6.0FCM
PX6.0 = 6.5FCM

I was fitted on the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer by the factory Mizuno rep. My profile was 80-6-3-3-6. My 6 iron speed was 80mph. It recommended 3 shafts, all of which I hit:

True Tempur DL XP S300
Rifle Project X PXi in 5.5
KBS Tour in Stiff.

The DL XP S300 had the most consistent ball strike for me and I liked the feel and trajectory. The PXi felt harsh to me and the rep noticed my facial expression. He explained that the Rifle shafts were not stepped but a solid tube of steel and therefore manufactured in a completely different method than stepped shafts. He said, "Some people like them." But I thought the flex point was higher and I kept hitting it on the toe. I still have the impact tape impressions. It just did not feel controllable to me. The KBS was inconsistent and ran from low on the heel to up on the toe. Naturally I went with the S300s. A lot of retailers have the Mizuno Swing Optimizer, which uses software to analyze your swing for the best fit in shafts.

I've always had decent results with S300s. Maybe not the best for me, but not bad either. I was fitted once with Flighted Rifle 5.5s and was all over the place with those things. Very high ball flight, inconsistent distances (usually short), terrible in the wind. I was fine with Rifle 6.0s. As with any shaft, it depends on your swing and what your looking for in terms of ball flight.

[/quote]xp is softest of the three...which is why it felt better...

kbs stiff is a stiff shaft...
5.5 is stiff as well...
though my pxi 5.0 feels weaker than my normal 5.0 in px
