Anyone Have/Use a Louisville Thumper Max 300cc?

Curious about this "300cc Persimmon", Anyone have one/use one? It looks kinda bloated, but that's definitely the largest Persimmon head I've heard of. Can't seem to find a non-Dealer stock picture anywhere...

Yep. Get it.

It's about 300CC and the center of it is hollowed out. Then, they inserted a Titanium ring in the hole for reinforcement and put one of the best shafts ever in it...

True Temper EI70.

I have an old ProGroup catalog, and they said the Peerless Pete was 12 percent larger than a standard persimmon driver.

Which means it's nowhere near 300cc.

But it was and is a very fine, well designed golf club with a great shaft.

I have a 3-wood Louisville Thumper Max which is a very nice club to hit. Not particularly long (16 degree loft, S/300 steel shaft) , but very easy to hit straight, and high launching. The ball drops on the green a bit like a hybrid. It's a nice club and I have fun with it whenever I take it out. It sits beautifully behind the ball, and the low profile inspires confidence for a solid strike, even with a bare lie.

I imagine the driver is a good one. I have the Bluegrass Bomber version of it sat at my uncle's in Tucson, so I've not had the opportunity to hit that. I do have a Louisville Smart driver over here in UK; I've hit several drives of 260/270 with that club, and would have no hesitation in recommending it as a modern persimmon driver.

I've been following this thread closely, as I'm a similar boat looking for new persimmon. I see in your signature that your playing Joe Powell's, how do like them compared to the Louisville offerings?

The Joe Powells are a more traditional (190cc) head size, and hence require a more precise strike. The Louisville Classic 50s would be the Louisville Golf equivalent to this. I think the Thumper Max and Smart offerings are intended to be a modern club to compete with metals, which they do fairly well, and certainly better than the Joe Powells, although this is probably down to having a longer graphite shaft more than anything else. Certainly there is a little more margin for error with the larger head size than you'd get with the classic head. The Smart is about the same volume as a Titleist 975D or Callaway Great Big Bertha if that helps you visualise it. The Thumper Max ("285cc on a 300cc chassis") would be bigger than the Smart.

I enjoy playing both, but I get more of a kick out of going the traditional "classic" route, so tend to play the traditional 190cc driver heads as a preference. Either way, though, I prefer "thwack" to "clang" or "ting" !

I've played Joe Powell PT1W, DSP J2, Glas Trac and PBG and they are all very nice to play if you hit them solid. The Joe Powell fairway driver, the PT1W Smoker, is pretty much my default 3-wood these days.

Here's a pic to whet your appetite: (note the Callaway is the original Big Bertha Warbird at 195cc, so comparable to the Joe Powells). You can see that the Thumper Max 3w is almost the same size as a classic persimmon driver.

I have a Thumper Max. I love it. I also have a Smart with a X100 true temper, a Smart with a x flex graphite, and a 50's classic with a x100. When hit on the screws the Thumper performs very similar to the smart with graphite. However when hit slightly off-center I found it outperforms the smart. At address it looks like a small persimmon Cleveland Hi Bore.

I have one. So here you go lumbee1977 .. a few pics for you.

Top left shows it alongside a Louisville Classic 50 driver and a Titleist 983e, to give you a bit of context about the size of the head.

Nice club, bought mine new and it's still mint (played it for one round in Tucson, and then everyone hit it once each when I played at Northwood in N.California with three guys from Persimmon Golf Today).

I hit it quite well, and recall it was quite high launching, and very respectable distance. This one has an S/300 shaft in it @43.5" grip to heel.

I think the blue "firing pin" is pretty cool!
