Rounds with a Vintage Bag

Thanks for the pointers Nomad. I have usually been reasonably capable at self correcting, but this one has me baffled. Much of what you have suggested I have tried to do at one time or another, but I don't recall any of them offering a consistent solution beyond blocking the ball out to the right.

If I look back over my season, I struggled with the tee ball out of the gate, but then it came around mid to late April. Since then I think I've only had one or two days where I could say that I drove the ball well.

Just keep plugging along I guess. If I don't find a solution the season will be over before you know it and then the hooks won't be bothering me. I might look for a copy of the good book for some winter reading. May as well go direct to the master for a little teaching! ;)

No worries. It'll either slot into place or you might have to take up lawn bowls !

Cheers

In this part of the world it's curling rather than lawn bowls. Our (curling) club memberships are in the mail and the season starts October 3, so it isn't far off.

As far as the golf driver swing is concerned, I have faith that I will find a solution that doesn't involve lawn bowls. That majestic 2W strike is still vivid in my mind!

Don't forge that the dude in your avatar is Canadian. There's a solution to every swing issue, conventional or otherwise, lawn bowls excepted!

Last saw curling on a frozen lake in the far south of New Zealand, but here in Oz it's lawn bowls for failed golfers (my bro is starting to buy up white uniforms and that's a worry).

Yes I know you're in Canada and also that Moe was a Canadian and won several Canadian Opens, and my mother's cousin used to live in Winnipeg iirc. There is quite a strong connection between the New Zealand and Canadian Scots, and around Dunedin in the south of NZ they still roll their R's (and play curling).

My wife is a grade 2 piper, one daughter is a side drummer, a second is a tenor drummer and my SIL is also a side drummer - I'm the only one who doesn't play, and we are all Clan MacInnes related.

My TM r7 came with 2 x 10's and 2 x 2's for the weighting system, I exchanged the 10's for 14's and put them both at the toe end which helps with the hook.

Well I'm an Ulster Scot; County Down Northern Ireland. There are no pipe or drum skills in my family although #2 son is a fair musician playing guitar, saxophone and piano, but he's more of a jazz player.

As for New Zealand; been there and loved it, but we didn't run across any curlers (that we were aware of). They sure are an active lot those Kiwis though!

Thanks for the reminder with the MWT on the R7. I had forgotten about that and I actually have a pair of 14 g weights that I could use as you describe. (cool)

Worth a try as the r7 does have a slightly closed face and a bit more weight won't hurt.

Played this afternoon with my usual weekday group of gents. We had five today, so split into two groups with the riders going out first and the rest of us pulling up the rear on foot.

Nothing much to report, just good steady play, either pars or bogies. I had a mixture of the War bird driver with my laminate woods and BeCu irons. The old Callaway is the best of a bad lot when it comes to getting off the tee this year. At least it's in the middle more often than not. The strength of my game today was wedges and putter. That's getting to be a bit of a refrain, but I'll never complain considering how many years I struggled with the flat stick.

I tugged my drive left on the 8th hole into some really foul rough. It's a low spot that has been cut back a bit, but the fescue is particularly mean. It proved to be the perfect opportunity to try out my new Ginty and it performed beautifully, gouging the ball out and leaving me just short and right of the green from a bit more than 150. I actually believe the Ginty worked better in that situation than my hybrid would have! (cool)

Good work scomac. I picked up a matching pair of Slazenger laminates this morning, 2 & 4 woods, Jack Nicklaus US Masters signature models for $6. VG condition and added to my growing collection. In the bag now for the next round - they feel good.

p.s. I wound them up at the practice net today and the 4 wood is absolutely brilliant off the deck - far better than any other 4 I've hit before. 2 woods are ALWAYS good.

Took my DW out for a nine and dine of sorts to my home course followed up by dinner at a country cafe.

The first hole was kind of unique in that both of our drives landed within a couple of inches of each other!

The course marshall showed up at the exact moment we got to our shots and asked if the wife had been giving me lessons?! That's OK, cause I give Bob more than enough crap when I'm working and he's playing so a touche' was in order.`

I was gaming the War birds and Precision II irons along with the Watson wedge and Zing once again. Wouldn't you know it that the exact moment my woods come around I begin to block all my iron shots to the right! Add to that a penchant for the three jack and a less than stellar round resulted despite the potential for a much better score.

Shot of the day (beyond our first hole drives) was a Heavenwood off the tee on three that was well over 200 yards! It left me wondering where the heck that came from. Despite the impressive tee shot the dreaded three jack reared its ugly head for a bogie on the hole!

All in all It was a good day with more moderate temperatures and an empty course in front of us. We finished our nine in about 90 minutes without even breaking a sweat.

The best part of the day was the dine portion where we went to a local cafe that was featuring a two can dine for $49.99 for a three course meal including wine. We both had beef bourginone and it was delicious! Not your typical mid summer meal, but who would turn that down when it's offered? We even got home in time to watch the Jays get clubbed by the Rays once again! :(

'53 Precision and I went to a local favorite track today. We had a nice time as always. He is a great guy to play with! Of course we had Persimmon and Hogan Blades. We used late '60's Ping Anser's. After a horrible 1st nine of 43, I said as we made the turn, "I'm gonna shoot 75. He roled his eyes and kept quiet. Well, the Old Pro racked up a 32 to get to that 75. Too much fun, had to brag. Sorry. :)

Eidolon--- You are going to love this. Did not play today even though my course was open with some temp tees etc but still extremely wet. Took the vintage stuff out since that is what I am planning to play all next week. Hit the old FC-4000s. I has been close to a year since I have hit them. Hit them great better than last year because I have lost weight and am turning on the ball again. Of course I had 5 wedges in the bag experimenting with the vintage wedges. The biggest surprise was I ended up throwing my old Cleveland 8802 style in the bag. I have had that thing at least 20 years. I have always putted sorta good with that thing when I could not putt with any thing else. Now it has a regular old school standard grip on it. I have recently went to a claw grip with a SS 2.0 on my Cameron. Heck I putted just as good with it using the claw method and stock grip as I do the Cameron. I guess the claw method is working for me

I'm not surprised! Good player/good clubs=good results. I'm working up that set of FC4000's I told you about. 2 thru 11 m2's 100% original. Your not gonna believe this..found a FC4000 TP Expeditor TPX all original to match. Same year as irons and 9/10 condition. Looks 6 months old. ($15.00). Crazy!

As for The Claw, every time I go to Myrtle Beach, I go to southside and visit Wallace Lee's, some claws are always part of the dinner! :)

I made it out yesterday for my first round in almost two months, and probably less than the 10th round or so this year. So, expectations were not high. For some reason, I chose to take the 1959 MacGregor PT2 FC4000's, along with Mac woods and putter. I hit a small bucket of balls before teeing off, just trying to find something short and simple to get round with. Whatever I found, it seemed to work.

I still struggled off the tee -- continuing a theme of this golf season for me -- but the PT2's were fantastic. I recall hitting only one really poor shot with them, a 5 iron off the toe on 18. I wasn't exactly knocking down flags but my short game was surprisingly decent. I started out par, par, and then rolled in a lucky birdie. The next 3 holes I made nice up-and-down saves before my first bogey. Then after a two putt par on 8, narrowing missing birdie, I realized I had a chance to shoot par on the front nine. Unfortunately, I three putted #9 for a bogey, and a front side of 37, still far surpassing expectations.

I couldn't keep it going on the back but I did manage to avoid double bogey-or-worse. I hit several pop-ups off the tee, including three of the four par 5's, but at least they all stayed in play. Ended up with a back nine of 42 for a total of 79...on a day when I was just hoping to break 90.

On #10 I joined up with a couple of young guys that got a kick out of my old clubs, especially the persimmons. And I got a nice little kick out of beating them with those old clubs! :)

Now I'm really enamored with the black ceramic faced Macs. I'm going to leave them in the bag for a while. They're short (37" 5 iron) and heavy but the combination really made them easy to sense where the clubhead was during my swing. Really solid clubs.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

BIG STU, OT I've just been looking up your home town online - it bears an uncanny resemblance to my area regarding golf courses and seafood. Whiting and Snapper are two of my favourite fish along with prawns crabs scallops and oysters. As far as golf courses go you are spoiled for choice but I don't think I could handle your wintertime temps (a good gumbo might help tho).

Cheers

FC4000s, low expectations and seafood; this thread has it all.

The perfect scenario - surf sea sand green fairways to the horizon and Spalding blades, cold beer and seafood dinners.

Now we're back on topic (maybe)
