Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

Come on guys. Maybe the OP shouldn't have "chuckled" at the guy, but sometimes a laugh just comes out. I've done it. Most people on here have probably done it before too. Sometimes you just can't help yourself.

And most guys would have done the same if called out.

Let's move on to something else. Anybody else got something?

I was nearing the end of my bucket and finishing with some sand wedges to a small green 30 yards away. Johnny Longdrive and his girlfriend take the stall behind me and he proceeds to pull out the driver immediately and tell her to watch him closely, as he is about to hit it out to the 300 yard sign. He proceeds to hit about 5 balls, none going further than 180 and slicing wildly right. She seems impressed, clearly not understanding the concept of yards vs. feet or the importance of directional control. I actually chuckled out loud and I presume he heard me because he actually asked, "So you think you can hit it farther?" I turned and said, "I can give it a try. What club do you want me to use?" "Driver" was his response, clearly thinking my 30 yard sand wedge were indicative of my driving ability. I said ok, tee'd one up and hit a smooth high draw about 305. I turned around and looked at him, he's clearly dumbfounded, and then I look at his girlfriend and she starts dying from laughter. I put my driver away, said have a good night and walked away.

I've never had a swing speed above 108, and I've hit balls 330 on those things.

Clearly not as proud as you were when you hit a ball further than a vegetable!

I'll stick my nose in this once and then let the Mods deal with it.

This has been a fun thread -- one me (and no doubt many) have checked in on for a LONG time. Can we holster the weapons here please and get back to something enjoyable? Please? It doesn't matter who has the last word or what happened up to this point. The rules of WRX are pretty clear about personal attacks. You guys know deep down that if you met up out there on the course you would enjoy it and shake hands at the end of the round, Lets call it "end of the round" on this one before we are all losers.

Please?

In defense of Brlong, perhaps he chuckled louder then he intended? And perhaps it wasn't his intent to embarrass anyone? And, I have played with a couple of members of this forum where a 325 yard drive is ho-hum. So yes there are people here who do hit it that far and farther.

Not as many as may lay claim, but some. Certainly not me. :-)

Which one's...I have 12? I think the one's you're referring to are my eagle globe and anchor wrapped in an American flag to signify my service in the Marine Corps, my POW/MIA Logo to remember the fallen and those who have yet to come home, and my Iraqi flag with my years of service in that country...all 7 of them. So no, they did not come with a chain and wallet, but they are a tribute to those that have bled for this country and laid down their life for your freedom.

Since I started playing golf I have more stories that I could even share. One of my favorites was a few guys that had been drinking obviously all day onn the course, just BS'ing with each other hitting range balls. Competing with each other, each one was saying they could hit the ball the furthest and continued to try to hit the ball as far as each other, normal drunk guy stuff ya know haha. Well now one says to the other, I bet you couldnt hit it as far as me with the other end of the driver, grip side. Well of course he takes the other guy up on it, flips the club around, winds up and smacks it. Makes good contact and goes about 80 yards, as he looks down at the club the shaft is completely snapped under the grip and can move around haha. As they are laughing, the other guy turns his around, after watching what happened to his friends club, takes a few swings and makes contact and hits it past the 100 yard flag. Instant celebration commenced as they both stand there with their now broken clubs haha, the winner takes his winnings and they both head up to the bar to continue the festivities haha. That was one of the best ones I had chance to witness lol.

That's fair, and this will be my last post. But I would hope the men that serve this country have enough respect as we should for them to not laugh at someone for taking his girlfriend out to the range, and possibly turning them away from actually getting into the game. Also calling someone a woman for an above average swing speed, when he's pointing out that Golfsmith juices their monitors, doesn't seem to add up to me.
Next time you go to the range and some wanna be long drive guy is near you, maybe you should put some earphones in. The game is starving for players already.

I'm glad someone said it...lol That was the reason for my question mark :) Both of my grandfather's were Marines as well and served in the Pacific. One on Iwo Jima with 5th Marines and one in the island hopping campaign between Guam and Peleliu. They don't make them like the men of that generation any longer. Sadly, neither lived to see me enlist, but I'd like to think they were granted leave from their post in heaven to watch from above. (A Marine Corps hymn reference there)

Depends on his role. If he's a peace keeper then yeah show more respect for your fellow human. If he's in combat a little arrogance might be a good thing. If he's in covert ops (or whatever it's called in real life) then don't discuss in an internet golf forum.

Not sure about most ridiculous thing I've heard on the range as there are too many to remember.

The best thing I've heard was a pga pro giving a lesson to a mid age guy who was awful. The pro looked at him in the face and said "take two weeks off, then quit!" Lol. I nearly fell over when I heard this. Lol

It sounds like your grandpa chewed some of the same dirt on Iwo that my stepdad did. Stepdad was in 3rd Marines.

All WWII veterans were a special breed. The sad thing is, we're losing them to old age at a steady rate. Our kids are the last generation that will be able to hear their stories.

I do have a ton of faith in our current men and women in the military. They are worthy successors to the legacy of our WWII, Korean and Vietnam vets.

I watched a guy try and Happy Gilmore a couple of drives last night. Two biggest divots I've ever seen with driver. I'm surprised the shaft didn't snap. And he never touched the ball at all.

But, given your 3 hcp, your short game costs you around 9 strokes per round relative to them?

Where do you get 9 strokes? Rory leads in scoring average at 68, which would be a difference of 7, but an average professional's scoring average is in the low 70's which would be between 3-5 strokes. Since I'm a 3 handicap (which is an average) I've shot lower, including two sub-par rounds. Anyone who watches a decent amount of golf knows that professionals save an incredible amount of strokes around the green through their short games and putting. Those two areas happen to be what I have trouble with and what is preventing me from becoming a scratch golfer. Hitting a chip is considerably different than hitting a full iron or driver off the tee. I never said I was the best ball striker who ever lived, but I do believe off the tee, I'm going to hit more fairways than the 'average' pro. As a generalization, #100 on tour this year only hit the fairway 60% of time.

Oh boy. Where to begin with this....

First, Brlong, thank you for your service. With that said, please take what I'm about to explain with the appropriate amount of respect that I feel our servicemen and women are due. I see you are new here (welcome!), so perhaps no one has ever explained this:

The difference between a 3 handicap and a tour pro is actually closer to 10-12 strokes, although most tour pros don't have official handicaps. Also, handicaps are not averages. They are a measure of potential. A handicap is a measure of your 10 best scores out of 20 in relation to the slope/rating. Tour players are playing on courses rated in the 75-78 range and 144-150 slope range. In tournament conditions. This is hugely different from anything we experience in day to day play at the local course.

Now, with that said, I do think there is value in tracking stats and comparing to Tour averages. It's fun, provides a challenge, and gives a pretty good indication of strengths and weaknesses. However, you have to keep in mind that they are playing a completely different game than we are. Hitting 60% of the FW on Tour is like hitting 85% of FW at your local course. It's just not the same thing. Are you doing well if you're hitting more than 60% of your FW? YES! Of course! Great work and keep it up! But to make the statement that you hit it longer and straighter than the average Tour player is not something that you can actually say until you go out and do it on Tour in the same conditions and on the same courses that they are.

As an old legend said, "there's golf, and then there's tournament golf." They are playing the latter, under the most difficult conditions possible. Just something to keep in mind. It would be like me saying that I'm just as good a handgun shooter as you are because I can go to the local range and knock out the center of a target at 25 feet. I've never done it while someone else is shooting at me, however, or with the knowledge that at any minute a tank I'm rolling around in could be hit by an IED. (Not knowing your military experience, I'm hoping that analogy makes sense). Two vastly different worlds.

I will say this has been the best thing I've heard on "the range" lately, so thank you for allowing me to participate in the thread!

Play a course with a rating higher than 72. A 3 handicap cant dream to compete in amateur golf. Lets not talk professionals and pga tour.

A 3 handicap would get boat raced in my regular group.

I've seen estimates that most PGA players would hold handicaps around +4 to +6. So maybe I shouldve said eight, not nine.

And on a typical PGA layout (maybe 76 rating, 140 slope), a 3 hcp will shoot low 80s on a good day.
