Just wanted to chime back in on the PING glide ES. I've been needing a new 56* due to a lot of bunker practice wearing out the face, so I picked up the ES in 56*. Normally I use a 60*/10* Vokey SM5 with M grind for my chips/pitches, but I had to try the new wedge out around the green.

It's STUPID how easy this grind is with Dan's method. Just silly. I'll be picking up the 60* ES when the Vokey wears down a bit more. I've never played PING wedges before, but I'm a big fan already!

I got the Glide SS 50-54-60 after a brief go with the scors and they are fantastic.

I have also found that the best way to hit this type of shot is by having almost no pressure on the right (down) hand. I think a lot of the digging comes form too much right hand action.

I've got a question about something I didn't really notice covered in the videos. When you're playing short game shots, what is your target? Are you always picking a specific landing spot, or is the hole always your target?
[/quote]

Pretty sure it's covered. Talk about not spot chipping and instead focusing on total distance and why that works

I'll re-watch. Thanks. I've always focused on the hole, but was never really taught one method or the other.

I bought the series now and great stuff! Just the basic bunker shot is worth the money - practiced today and I never hit the green side and fairway bunker like today! A few questions though:

1. What to do in wet/solid bunkers? Did hit one hot trying the basic shot.
2. Cut underneath the ball with the open 60* wedge chipping, where did I go wrong? Flipping?
3. Couldn't see what's been referenced above with spot chipping, which video would that be?

Again, great videos, learned a lot!

Went sand is similar to plugged lie. You need a steeper AOA. Just not as extreme. Setup changes for plugged lie apply to wet sand. Swing is sane. Setup only change

If you're cutting under it the ball is likely sitting up and not down and you're trying the wrong shot. Watch ball sitting up video.

Spot chipping I'm pretty sure was in basic shot. The whole point is the ball goes relative the same overall distance regardless of contact. But it does not fly the same distance every time. So spot chipping is focusing on something that won't help. You could land in same spot every time but not end up near the hole every time. The hole is the target

Never thought about chipping this way, although I've always understood that from sand

If your very consistent with strike and spin is spot chipping still viable?

You can do lots of things and have success but IMO no. A baseball player one hopping it from center to the catcher isn't looking where he's gonna land it his target is the catcher. Same thing when rolling a ball, focus is target not it hits ground first. I think focusing on the actual target leads to closer shots

Dan, or anyone else, any tips for playing off mud?

Conditions are getting pretty poor over here in the UK and I'm finding myself with chip shots off muddy lies. Theres barely any grass, it's wet but quite firm still.

Also, some of my normal chips end up going a little right - is that likely swinging across the line?

I totally sympathise with the concept of the British November tight wet muddy lie

Obviously precision is everything with a lofted wedge off these lies so you really have to be aggressive. That's not the best strategy unless you are a really good chipper and pitcher and have confidence in your ability

Something that some people find easier is to play it just like a bunker shot. It's harder to get it really wrong than you might think

Not keeping clubhead low in follow through and not hitting the ground. You want to thump the ground, the setup and club design will prevent it from digging

I'm a recent convert to your method and results are improving. So should the followthrough feeling be extension down toward the ground rather than forward toward the target? With the ball so far forward in my stance, I instinctively feel like I'm extending out toward the target and "reaching" for the ball.

When you want it to go only a short distance do you also thumb the ground? The thumbing has to be done with at least some downwards force. How you you avoid it going too far? Thumbing with slower speed or shorter swing?

No clue what you are asking. Thumb are pointing at the ground at contact. All you're doing is maintaining that relationship post impact.

I understand that you want the club to have some firm contact with the ground so to make sure that it slides rather than diggs. THis applies also on very short shots I understand. That means to apply some downward pressure on the club rather than lightly sliding it under the club without much pressure? I say this because I blade sometimes the short ones.

The club will slide on the ground. The down happens as your turn while bent over and wrist uncock and arms swing. You don't need to artificially create more down or press club into the ground. You also don't need to try and make the club only brush the ground. Swing the club, extend arms with thumbs pointed down. That's it. It's all in the videos. Ground interaction depends on turf conditions but the motion is the same. On softer thicker lies there will be small divot. On tighter firmer lies there won't even be a mark. Most are in between.
