Where to play?

Going at the end of March for 4-5 nights. Staying at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess I believe (any other suggestions would be great). Besides the TPC Stadium course, where should I play?

We Ko Pa?
Troon?
Grayhawk?

We Ko Pa Cholla Course is a must, there are quite a few of threds like this around, do a quick search!

We Ko Pa is my #1 pick. best conditions i've ever played.

I came back from Arizona yesterday and had a blast... Wound up playing 96 holes in 4 days. We didn't feel like paying top $$$ to play, so we mostly played decent to good courses. Here's how we fared...

Thursday PM - Lookout Mountain at Pointe Hilton. Excellent course in great condition - $75/round. Friday morning - Wigwam Gold. Very nice and also great condition - $75/round. Friday afternoon - Palm Valley Palms - not as nice as Wigwam, but for $35/round who's going to complain. Saturday - Vista Verde. GREAT course in great condition. If you want to challenge yourself, it's up there in terms of difficulty (7200 yards/144 slope) and can be played for $80/round (use golfnow for tee times). Sunday - Orange Tree. Of all the courses, this one was the easiest and quite average, but we were in a rush (plane leaving at 6:30 PM), so we weren't too picky.

We Ka Pa is a must...SunRidge Canyon and Eagle Mountian are a good combo if you plan to do a 36 hold day.

I second We Ko Pa...great track, also reco Gold Canyon, 20 minute drive but worth it...easy on the pocket book also. Troon very nice but expensive and Grayhawk was nice but nothing spectacular for the price. Included some pics of We Ko Pa and Gold canyon.

Ok guys I really need some help here. We are arriving in Scottsdale on 3/21. I am playing with a buddy who lives there at Talking Stick North on the 22nd. Now I need to play Friday-Sunday. Would like to play We Ko Pa, Sunridge, and possibly Legend Trail. We are staying at the Four Season's so ideally would like to be within 30 minutes of the courses I play. Any suggestions?

We Ko Pa...hands down. Also suggest Gold Canyon. see pics above

Gold Canyon is about 1.5 hr. drive from the Four Seasons. Need courses closer.

Sorry..we stayed at Westin Kierland and it only took us about 35 minutes. Troon North is nice, pricey but great golf course. Interested in TPC of Scottsdale? Kinda cool to play where the pros play.

I played TPC Scottsdale back in August '06, don't know how much it was, but it was excellent, quite hot, about 108!

I've played the Troon North Monument Course, and I defy anyone to find anything nicer in that area....or anywhere. I would recommend it without any hesitation whatsoever. It was probably the second best conditioned course I've ever played and I've been lucky enough to play some really good ones. Thats my 2-cents.

Sorry but $298 per round at Troon isn't worth it for me.

Wow! I was taken there by a customer a few years ago. I never saw the bill. I had no idea it was that much. Its nice, very very nice, but I wouldn't say it was $300 nice if it was coming out of my own pocket. Do they have twighlight fees? I bet they are a lot less.

No twi rate this time of year! I was shocked. I was equally shocked that the Four Seasons doesn't have the ability to get a slightly discounted rate for guests.

I second the suggestion to hit Sunridge Canyon. I played it a few years ago and found it memorable.

Yes, play WeKoPa Cholla, Sunridge Canyon then consider either Grayhawk course or either Troon North course.

I'm staying at the Kierland resort in the middle of April. Do they really charge resort guests $180 to play? It seems for that price or a little more I could play a whole bunch of nicer/better courses.

 

I'll be a single each day, should I have any trouble getting a last minute tee time in the area at that time of year?

JB, I played the Kierland resort last year and I would definitely say not worth $180. Typical resort course. I did however manage to talk the staff into going out for $50 around 5:30. Had lots of time to finish 18, not many people were playing at that time. Other than that, better courses for the money around town.

jb16...don't pay that much for Kierland. It's a mediocre layout at best. You'll have no problem getting out as a single.

I've also played Kierland. Not worth 180 that's for sure. It's more resort hype and price than anything. It was fun but if you want real desert golf go play Eagle Mtn, We-Ko-Pa and Sunridge Canyon.

 

Has anyone played the Wildfire courses? Those are located in north Scottsdale area so it'd be a close drive. They look fairly nice and are less expensive than Troon and such.

I was told by a AZ Golf Package Company that the Wildfire courses are way over priced for what they are. I believe this time of year they are both $205 + tax!

A good place to check is the site golfnow.com. You can get some decent deals there. They don't have times for some of the really high end, but there are times for some pretty good places.

 

One recommendation that I usually give people who go down there from colder climates is to play Vistal right when you get there. It's within 10-15 minutes from the airport and it's a good place to get the rust off. They have a good grass range and the course is a great value.

We Ko Pa's 8th is still my favorite hole of all time. 650 yard par 5 with that green! Awsome!

Wildfire is overpriced. The Palmer course only Arnie in his prime could play well (lots of blind tee shots). The Faldo course has to many traps on the course including many holes with traps in the middle of the fairway.
