Cleveland CG4 irons

To buy or not to buy...

Hey all,

I am considering buying a set of Cleveland's CG4 irons and have several questions on whether or not the sticks are right for me. First, I currently play a set of Nike NDS which I bought a little while back at a very cheap price. While I like the irons, I find the set very hard to work right or left and also feel as though I am hitting these shorter than some other irons that I have tested. I like the look of the Clevelands, but have not actually teed them up yet. I play to about a 10 handicap, so I do have some consistency in ball striking. Additionally, I want some forgiveness so my bad days don't go horribly wrong.

Also, I noticed on ebay several sets of CG4's going at around 200-300 dollars brand new. The pictures looked real, the shafts were all pretty good. Should I be worried about buying irons 400 dollars under the retail price?

well, you should try the Cg4 tours if you are a 10, or the cg2's. they are nice irons, I will be playing the cg1 Black pearls

Yeah, I'll probably go demo them before I buy them. I'm glad to hear that they are $700 outside of retail. Are the CG2s cavity or blades?

Thanks Rich! I like the look of the CG1s a lot, but I'm pretty sure I'm not ready to make that jump yet. I'll probably demo all three of the CG4s/CG2s before making a buy.

For a 10 handicap, the GG2's or CG4 Tours will do the trick.

there's a new cg4 tour coming that will trump the cg2.. check the tour bag thread for it. I tried the cg4 tous, but the topline was way too thick.

try the r7 tp, srixon 302's (can be had cheap), or the adams pro forged too.

If you're willing play another brand, don't discount sets like the R7 TP's and X-20 Tours.

Yeah, I'm not real attached to the Cleveland brand opposed to Taylormade, Adams, or another one. I'll probably try to demo a couple brands of player/gi irons and see what fits. Is Callaway's Optifit system used in their irons?

I saw your free 540XD giveway contest. Very impressed.

 

I'm playing Cleveland TA2's right now and love em. It's going to be hard to convince me to buy a set of irons now that aren't clevelands. Anyway, if you feel like hoing some more cleveland irons and giving away some more clubs; it would difficult, but I would be happy to take the CG1's off of your hands when you're done with them :o. I would like to play blades, but I Ho'd way too much las year and have put a stop to buying new clubs :drinks:.

The cg4 tours have everthing I'm looking for, accuracy, soft feel, looks and forgiving.

So the CG4 Tours are much more of a player's iron rather than a shovel. I like the look of the CG2 a lot more than the CG4 though. The CG4 looks a little bit cheesy, but if you are knocking shots stiff from everywhere it doesn't really matter how the club looks.

Been playing the cg4 tours for 5-6 months. Solid club with a little more forgiveness than the cg2, especially in the long irons. If you can get past the thick top line (not nearly as thick as the cg4) you won't be disappointed in the tours.

I think I'm going to make an investment in the CG4 Tours. The price is right and it sounds like the perfect iron for my game at the moment. I am a little disappointed about the thick topline, but I'm glad it is thinner than in the other model.

I'm not 100% sure these are going to be released to the general public. I also don't think Cleveland has any plans on releasing new irons this year, but I may be wrong about that.

 

I love my CG10 wedge, so I'm a fan of the CMM materials Cleveland uses in their irons, however I'm not a fan of the CG4's. First of all, the looks are pretty pathetic -- the 'shovel stigma' is definitely in effect here. The offset is pretty hefty and the top line strikes me as far too big for comfort. When I hit them the feel was what I'd expect from the CMM, very soft. However I felt like the irons were too large for chipping and the ball flight was just way too high. The CG4 Tours strike me as a scaled down version of the regular CG4's. The heads are smaller, and there is "less" offset but it doesn't seem like it. I wouldn't really call them "players clubs."

 

The CG2's on the other hand are great clubs. However, they're discontinuing them so they'll have to be purchased used or on fleabay. I'd certainly recommend them to someone who feels like the CG4's are too big and bulky, but the CG1's might be too much for their game right now. :drinks:

 

I'm certainly not trying to steer you away from Cleveland, they're a great company and make great equipment, but make sure you try out other clubs as well. Just because you might be getting a deal on a set doesn't necessarily mean you should get them as they might not fit your game. :o

Has anyone hit the Callaway X-20s? I'm wondering how those are accuaracy and distance wise.
