Golf Rumor Central!!!!!!!!!

We read and hear a lot of golf rumors everyday. We always come across some and just think, “Wow, I’d love to print that but I don’t know if it’s true or not”. We try our best to weed out the crappy ones and only write about the ones with some merit. We thought we would talk a bit about some of the big golf rumors out there right now, add in the bits of info that we know and then pass it on to the boys at www.golfwrx.com for discussion. Now we’re not saying any of these are true but they make for a great read and a great discussion!

The Titleist 735 irons will not be released until the spring of 2006

I have heard this from a few people and it does make some sense. These irons are generating a ton of interest on the internet and it would make sense that they released them at the start of the season… not the end. Hang on to the current line until spring and then come out strong in the spring. If I were a betting man… and I’m not… well not until NFL season anyways… I would bet that the 735 irons will be out in September. Expect the Titleist 660 and 695 irons to be released at the same time as the 735’s.

Fred Couples is back using Bridgestone irons

Fred signed with Bridgestone a while back but he has been using TaylorMade irons for a while. Well… looks like Fred is playing a Bridgestone prototype iron now but he may still have a few TaylorMade irons (possibly a 3 and 4 iron) in his bag still. I don’t want to give away any big secrets but don’t be surprised if you see a bit more of Freddy here on SirShanksAlot.com in the next few months. Then we can get the REAL scoop about his clubs! I’ve said too much already!

TaylorMade will release a R9 driver soon

This one is funny. Sure TaylorMade is known for coming up with new products almost daily but don’t expect a new driver from them in the near future. TaylorMade just released the R5 TP and it sounds like they want to keep the R7 through the rest of the year. It wouldn’t surprise me if they came out with a bigger R7 Quad next year and I guess the “R9″ would be a good name. Kind of fits their “naming mold”… doesn’t it? Don’t hold your breath here… unless you can hold it for a really long time!

Callaway has bumped back the Fusion FT-3 release date

Yep. I’m hearing July 1st now. They want to get caught up on
backorders before releasing a new club. We are starting to recieve some of our backorders now and it looks like Callaway is on their way to sorting this big mess out! Watch for a matching fairway wood at the same time.

Callaway plans on releasing a second version of the X-Tour iron

I read this one a few weeks ago but no one at Callaway wants to talk about it. The rumor I saw mentioned that Callaway wanted to create a new grind of the current iron. I guess this is a possibility but I don’t know if it would ever be a real solid retail option. I could see it being a very useful special order though!

The Cobra 400SZ and 440SZ should be discontinued at the end of the year

I have talked about this one in the past. I don’t ever want to call something a “for sure” but it sure sounds like the end is near for these two popular woods. They have had a good run but Cobra likes to keep their products on a two year life cycle. I’d expect the 460SZ to stick around though.

Nike wants to add a “big” name in their putter department

This one makes some sense. Titleist has Scotty Cameron, Wilson has Kirk Currie… the list goes on. It seems that if you want to make it big in the putter business, you need a big name designer. I could see Nike going after a Kevin Burns or someone like that but it seems unlikely that they would land a Scotty Cameron. Titleist can’t afford to lose Scotty!

There you go… a few of the rumors that we run into now and again. Are they true? Who knows… but if we knew, we wouldn’t call them rumors would we? They are fun to read and fun to talk about but remember to take all rumors with a grain of salt! Thanks for dropping by and we will talk to you again very soon…

This has been floating around for 6 months or so. Don't look for it to happen. Instead, the better "rumor" I heard was that the "really big boys" (sir Mr Knight himself) at Nike told the golf division that if they didn't turn a profit this year....that was it. In other words, the endless money pit of a black hole would be closed up forever.

We'll see. Again...just what I've been told and that's that.

Have you guys heard Nike wants to buy out Callaway?

We did a big thing on that for April fools day and man did we get some email! I don't know what to think about it... it's not a question of if Nike has the ability to... because they do. It's more a question of Nike's commitment to the golf business. Are they in it for the long haul?

What will happen when Tiger's Nike contract runs out? Will they sign him again or will they pack it all in? It will be interesting to see what happens here... I used to think that it was just a matter of time before Nike bought Callaway but I am starting to think that it will never happen now. I hope it never happens!

yeah, great post, thanks for clearing all of that up. Lots of stuff i've heard but haven't been sure at all what the truth is. Do you have any info on balls in particular? There are TONS of rumors about different models, changes, release dates and such.

I added a bit about the new Bridgestone B330S ball in today's news (June 9/05)

Great info by Sirshanksalot.

I am glad that Nike is searching for a designer for their putters. The Nike putters have good feeling, fit nicely behind the ball, however the design... Oh the design! Kevin Burns will be an excellent choice. Imagine the modern lines and futuristic inserts of the Nike putters with the classic and traditionalist design of Kevin Burns. Nice chemistry!

Kudos for Sirshanksalot.

Tom Slighter would be a good one IMO... he makes some cool stuff and kind of combines traditional and modern styles. I don't know if his name is "big" enough for Nike though...

I've heard they will start shipping around the first part of August so don't take faith in the next year rumor yet :vava: :busted_cop: ;)

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

The nike Tour putters are not KB putters. I know him personally and play golf with him on a regular basis. He has talked with Nike many times but all of them lead to Nike wanting full control over production, design, and operations.

I think it would be a great partnership. KB putters are a great secret among milled putters. Some of the best craftsmanship out there.

By the way, about 6 years ago when Nike bought Impact golf they talked to Kevin about designing a putter for Tiger, he made about 5 prototypes but tiger did not want to switch from Scotty. I offered him a ton for the prototype but he said he could not sell it.
