Changing Iron Lofts on Mixed Srixon Z 585 / Z 785 and PUREing

Hey,

I'm new to the community, so am looking for any guidance and appreciate it since I know there is a lot of detail here. I play a lot of golf and am a 4.3 index, but don't follow or know much about clubs. I recently got fitted at TrueSpec and thought overall it was pretty good, but was disappointed that they only fitted your irons by using a 6 iron. I feel really good about the shafts that they put me in Nippon Modus Tour 120 S. I've played AP2s for a long time and like that almost all of my irons have 4 degree loft difference between them am hesitant to buy a set with some gaps of 2-5 degrees. I'm leaning towards a mixed bad Srixon Z 585 (4-6) and Z 785 (7-pw), but am planning to make the clubs all weaker to reduce the gaps. I'm thinking 4 (23 from 22), 5 (26 from 25), 6 (29 from 28), 7 (32 stays the same), 8 (37 from 36), 9 (42 from 40), pw (47 from 45), my gap is a 50. Do you lose anything by adjusting the gaps? Does this make sense to do?

Thanks so much for any gudiance. Trying to get better at any cost.

I think you may be focusing on the wrong gaps. Loft gapping on paper is one thing but I believe yardage gapping to be the critical factor. You are considering a combo set with two different heads and potentially two different CG locations. From a yardage gapping standpoint they might actually blend perfectly with no loft adjustments required(doubtful but possible). Srixon irons are excellent so I would not hesitate moving forward with the combo set. I would suggest playing with them and determining where your yardage gaps are before you adjust lofts throughout the entire set. You may only need to change a couple of lofts to dial in your desired yardage gaps.

I certainly wish you the best.

Sorry forgot to ask about PUREing. Does this actually make a difference?

That's a big, huge animal there. Bother are people on both sides of the fence on that one. I wouldn't worry about it. You can search it. It gets heated.

I think you’ve got the lofts on the 9 and PW slightly off.

Regardless, to your question. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the loft differences. I don’t think one degree makes much of a difference.

I recently purchased Srixon 765/965 with the break at the 7, so I have 5 degrees between my 6 and 7 iron. I can’t think of one real world situation where I’ve thought it had an impact

Don’t forget the clubhead design influences launch and ball speed, this is why there is a bit of loft comprehension going on at the long end of modern sets these days. (22,25,28,32,36,40,45,50) would seem a reasonable place to start. Then arrange a gapping session to find out the actual distances and tweak the lofts as required. By the way, make sure you use a club builder who uses best practices, the heads need protection before being clamped for adjustment otherwise the V Sole will be marked.

Your build spec is available from Srixon using no cost shaft options, just make sure you provide specific, length, lie, loft and swing weight requirements and you should be fine. I’d guess there will be a significant saving vs TourSpec. This also removes the possibility of puring, which is a very polarising subject.
