If you are driving down from a northern direction there are some really great public courses in Alabama to play and you could make a fun trip of it!

It is the best run event we have been to. My son is still young but he will be playing it for the second time. What age division will your son be in?

There is no qualifier, though you have to turn in a tournament resume from previous tournaments. What I have derived from their selection process is they take as many kids from Alabama regardless of their playing ability. They then take at least one kid from every state that they had apply. They then take kids that played in previous years regardless of their playing ability. After that they take kids of people they know. At that point there are no more slots left.

There is a reason their field isn't very good when you get to the teens. At younger ages are the better fields.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Basically what Heavy said. They are VERY deferential to players from Alabama (perk for my son) and the Southeast. It is an incredibly well run tournament. If you come Alabama has some really great public courses and as you said the fishing here is essentially second to none. You could spend a week in the state playing golf and fishing for a very affordable price.

That sounds good. Really good. Never even been close to Alabama before so that will be an experience in itself. I'll try to apply for next year and see what happens.

You should. The Robert Trent Jones courses are all fantastic as is Ol' Colony (the home of The University of Alabama golf program) in Tuscaloosa. Fishing wise Lake Guntersville in North Bama is hailed as one of the top bass lakes in the world with several other lakes high on the list as well.

Aside, they intentionally make it a tough tournament. Kids my son routinely plays with shot well over their normal scores so it is a good challenge to push a kid. As Heavy said, the best fields are typically the two younger divisions. We did not apply last year but thinking about it this year.

Very well run tournament - my son played this past summer and had a great experience. One son of a Tour Pro competed, and the dad was following the group each day.

You should note that there is a cut after the first two days (I believe top 40 and ties). Also the municipal airport is very small and in some cases only has one or two flights per day to major hubs. If your flight is cancelled or a late afternoon departure is delayed, you may miss a connection like we did and have to stay overnight somewhere.
