Iron Distances: Tee vs Fairway

How do your iron distances compare from tee vs fairway?

Mine depends on the iron a lot. 9 iron through wedges, nearly identical distance. 4-5 irons, I probably get 15 yards more off of a tee than off the fairway, which is one reason I rarely even hit them off of the fairway. 6-8 irons, maybe 4-5 extra yards, not a huge difference there either.

About 5 yards for me.

I dont play my irons on a tee on the tee box unless I'm trying to squeeze a couple yards out of the longer irons. Short irons never see a tee. But, like the poster said above it depends on the iron. I used to play them off a tee and the short irons didn't change at all distance wise.

Can't say there's a difference when both are hit well for me.

There might also be a component of what your fairways and tee boxes look like. If they don't look like ANGC you probably want to use a tee.

For me irons tend to launch higher and stop sooner off the tee but not a great deal of difference length-wise.

I seem to be the opposite as some posted here, I get more compression and therefore spin by hitting straight off the turf because I come into it at a slightly steeper aoa, whereas off the tee I tend to get more low spin lower flight duds. Just me and how I hit the ball, I tend to try and pick it more when its teed.

Off a tee, typically, irons are about 3-5 yards longer than the same iron off the turf. Of course, the quality of the turf factors in my iron distance. Off good turf, iron distances will be much closer to tee distance.

Perfect lie in the fairway would be about the same, maybe a few extra with the longer irons off the tee.

I do have a 3 hybrid and love it!. If I'm long enough out to use a 4-5 iron off the fairway, I typically use my hybrid. Generally on the course I play I am very rarely in a spot to have a 4 or 5 iron distance into the green, it is usually either hybrid or under a 6 iron.

The same for me. Only difference is I hit the ball further with a good strike from rough for some reason. I heard the time flier a lot and believe it - see it on tv and my own shots - I don't know the reasoning behind it though.

Lower spin, ball goes farther out of flier lies in the rough.

I think the grass getting between the ball and the face of the club acts sort of like a lubricant and won't allow for the spin.
