I went through so many 3W head/shaft combos that I cannot even remember them all. I have four 3Ws sitting in the corner right now I'm too busy to sell. The Cally DET 15* with Motore F3 S flex got in the bag five months ago. It's still there and the biggest testimony I can give to it is I rarely lay up on par 5s anymore. Second biggest testimony is it has been a long time since I looked at my 3W as a "go to" club. Now I can; I am very confident with it. The setup, the sound, the looks, the face....it's the best 3W I've had in a long, long time.

Just walked out of the local gg with one. The thing is one hell of a wood. It's the first wood I've hit so far that has felt as nice as my r7 tp all around. A nice classic shape, a very different but pleasing sound, an authoritative but not overly loud whack, almost like a thicker sounding ping. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it's nice. :) Sort of similar to my DET hybrid, but a much more pleasing sound.

The one thing that's interesting about the club is that you really get a lot of forgiveness, even on complete miss hits. I was really tired tonight and while I had mostly nice swings, there was one that came off the toe as I was closing it and it still came back to a playable part of the fairway.

I was thinking blue or redboard for this club as well, going to have to see what I can dig up.

It's so weird, but I could foresee myself playing an entire callaway bag without a problem. 4 years ago? No way, not a chance. Their clubs were completely unappealing. Now, I'd game an FT Tour with DET 3w and 3h, x-forged irons and wedges and an odyssey black tour 2ball blade. Not so sure on the balls, but damn, that's a SOLID bag.

What are the shafts that you are seeing being played with these heads the most Joe, if you don't mind me asking?

If your looking for a great, traditional looking fairway there are 2 that are outstanding IMO. The new Bridgestone J38 fairway are sweet! Hit them at a demo day and simulator and just great looking. Of course depending on your budget best 3 wood on the market retail right now is the Exotics CB3 tour, just a little spendy.

I was comparing the CB3 with the DET tonight and they were both really comparable. What sold me with the DET was sound and control. Don't know why, but I found the DET much easier to work, not only side to side, but high and low. For the most part, the CB3 seemed to keep the same ball flight consistently. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I like to keep the ball low on a couple of holes I play at some of the local courses.

By far the best fairway wood I've ever used. It kicked the 904F out of my bag. However, I didn't like the stock shaft so I reshafted it with an SVS7. Couldn't be happier. Longest fairway ever. Just as workable as the old 904F but more forgiving. Very good from various lies. Also, got the 5 wood. One awesome one, two punch from the fairway. Shots land soft when needed or can be made to roll out thanks to the low spin.

Well, Depends on individual need after fitting.

But If I must say :) :

Lots of:
1st place is Kaili
2nd place is Ilima
3rd place are Devotion or Revenge
4th place MIYASAKI Blue or Silver and TOUR AD DI

All this shafts has it's own character and differences when build custom properly. ie: Kaili is a counter balance shaft that need a heavier head and proper tipping to get it right. Placement of hotmelt are important to get a certain sound and feel and some told me performance too.

Thanks Joe. :)

I just ask since the DET is targeted at a slightly smaller audience, so it's interesting to see what kind of players are playing what shafts with it. you can tell a lot about a player from what shaft he plays.

I picked up a DET 15* myself off the BST because I was curious about all the hype. I haven't hit it yet, but it sets up nice and square and the roundish head shape is easy to get used to visually. I need to find a shaft for it, so I'm considering the RIP, Fubuki AX, and Matrix 8M2 or HD8.

What kind of ball flight are you getting? I was thinking about picking up a redboard 73 and trying that first.

  • 4 weeks later...

Lately I've had an eye on the Tour Edge Exotics CB3 Tour model, but when I picked up this Callaway Diablo Edge Tour I nearly fell in love. The look is clean, strong and flawless. I could easily see putting this in the bag immediately. Might happen too........ the price at my local "big box" retailer is down to $148. Sounds to me like Callaway has an updated line on the way so these are PRICED TO SELL !

The Callaway DET sets up really nice (sqaure) to me, and with Matrix X-CON 7 shaft in it, its trying to kick the 07 Burner TP 14.5* out of my bag. Didn't really care for the stock Callaway shaft that came in the DET.

Transitioning to an all Ping bag with one exception -- CW DET Fairway 3W.

All of the CW Tour equipment is solid but this one has everything -- off the tee, off the deck, long, perfect ballflight, very forgiving.

Been a huge fan of TEE fairway woods for years, but this club is a notch better with more versatility.

Count me in as another very happy DET 3W owner. Mine was $99 at my local shop. The loft measured out to 16.5* which is perfect for me. Stock shaft for now but will be looking at an ilima over the winter as my previous 3w had a red board. Great club for the money.
