Father's Day - Day/Weekend Trip - NorthEast

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to take my father out for Father's Day (or around that date sometime). I'm in Terryville CT and don't want to travel more than 3 hours. I'm undecided on a day trip (leave early morning, get breakfast, golf, get early dinner and come back home), or if the place is extra special, play a round that day, stay overnight, and play a round the next day. That would be if they had multiple courses worth playing at a reasonable cost.

I have no idea where to go. I've never played The Ranch in Southwick Mass. I've heard good things about it. They are running a Father's Day special for $75 on a weekend with a cart, range access, and a small gift of some sort.

We've never played Fox Hopyard in CT. They have a $139 special with $20 in food included, range balls, and cart.

We've also never played Great River here in CT. They are $140 with range access and a cart.

We have never played Lake of Isles. The best value would be their $199 package which is golf, cart, practice facilities, a sleeve of balls, free drink after the round, $15 food voucher AND a room overnight at Foxwoods.

I'm open to all your suggestions. I'd wouldn't mind staying overnight somewhere, but it would have to be good value with multiple rounds of golf or replays for it to be worth it I think.

On another note, I'm about to write a couple reviews of courses in my area I've been to recently.

I like The Ranch's sister course Crumpin' Fox, great layout and course is always in great shape. They have "The Fox Inn " right down the street if you decide to spend the night. You could play Crumpin spend the night and then drive down and play the Ranch the following day.

Crystal Springs Resort in north Jersey is probably about a little over 2 hours from you. They've got 6 golf courses with 2 of them being in the top 10 public golf courses in the state (Ballyowen #2 and Wild turkey #10) They've got plenty of places to eat and the NJ Beer and Food Festival on Father's Day Weekend. The area is in the mountains as well so it may be something you're interested in as they have other outdoor activities (hiking, biking). They've got plenty of stay/play packages and their courses are also on GolfNow.com/TeeOff.com if you find better deals on there too.

That deal which includes a hotel room at Foxwoods is a great value. Lake of Isles is a very nice course, beautiful, challenging, and has many tees to accommodate different skill levels. If you want to play a 2nd round, Fox Hopyard is not that far from Foxwoods.

How about Centennial Golf Course in Carmel, NY. 27 hole course, pick and choose which nine's to play. It's about an hour from you.

Another option (albeit expensive, like $210) would be pound ridge golf course in pound ridge, NY. About 1 hour and 15 minutes from you. I've never played but have only heard great things.

Not sure what you and your father's handicaps are but I played Foxwoods years ago when it was relatively new. Granted, I was also new to golf but that is one tough course. So many forced carries, etc....IMO, if I were taking my dad who is a 20 handicap, I wouldn't take him to foxwoods as he would struggle. I would take him to a course that is somewhat challenging but relaxing at the same time.

Let us know which route you go.

I would think golf and hotel room would be preferred. Would not have to travel back and if you want some adult beverages you could with no worry. Have fun.

Was just at Great River. Excellent conditions. Tough greens but fair layout. Good food. Good practice facility.

Don't do pound ridge not worth the cost. If money isn't an issue check out Trump Ferry Point but it'll be $250-300/person depending on whether you cart or caddy.

Wow. Sorry for the late response. Just checked back in finally... Thanks for all the info. Centennial looks pretty nice. They are running a deal for 4 rounds for $239. I think I'll actually take my whole family out there for an early father's day ( a foursome anyway) and we can all get in a round together. With 27 holes it should be less packed for a 4 some with my younger brother and Mother. Thanks for the suggestions. They will definitely be considerations just other times during the year.

Nice. Let us know how it turns out. Haven't played Centennial in a few years but always enjoyable.
