Tiger Woods' new T/M wedges - shot @ 2018 US Open

Recommended Posts

Jonathan Wall literally details how it all works in the PGATour.com article, so there shouldn't be any confusion:

Working directly with master craftsman Mike Taylor — who worked at Nike Golf with Woods — Demkowski received numerous grinds to study before settling on a grind for both wedges that was machined in-house.

Once the heads were complete, Demkowski sent the wedges back to Taylor, who built them to Woods' specifications. While the entire process took four weeks, it was only within the last week-and-a-half that Woods began working the wedges at home.

"The cool thing for us is his excitement to play our wedges," Demkowski said, "because he sees the value in the Milled Grind."

-Mike Taylor sent numerous grinds for TaylorMade to study and select for Tiger

-Once chosen, the grinds were milled in-house at TaylorMade (hence the milled grind)

-Wedges were sent back to Taylor to be built to Woods' specs

I'm sure the Artisan serial numbers were added after the fact to track Woods' build specs. That doesn't necessarily mean the heads were created by Mike.

I believe it is also possible that the Artisan serial numbers were there because MT sent the raw blanks to TM to have milled. We know TM didn't use that material so its likely the blank was sourced from MT. Just a guess on my part.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I remember reading that TM was using stainless steel for their wedges and Tiger wanted the carbon steel that he's used to. Would explain why there isn't the red plastic on the bottom of the sole as well.

The MG wedges have been carbon steel so, I was sure what you were trying to say. Not sure why the plug is out but it could have something to do with the grind and possible only on the original set. I have heard TM has made him back ups that are CNC milled not hand worked.

Got ya. I went back to the other thread and found the article I was thinking of. Here's the quote:

"Aside from the specific grinds, Woods' heads are made from carbon steel instead of the stainless steel used for most of TaylorMade's Tour staff.

"He can feel a difference," Demkowski said. "We feel a lot of stuff is geometry driven, but certainly Tiger he can certainly notice a change in the head material.""

I think you are correct on the process. But you never know who owns that cad program. They maybe artisan on rent to TM. Heck. It wouldn’t shock me to know that artisan had the capability to mill these themselves. Exactly... and let's not forget that the MT (Artisan) stamp is on not one but BOTH wedges.

lets also not forget that anyone with a decent milling machine and software could do this. You guys all act like there is only one person in the world that know how to grind a wedge.... jeez.

If they could why didn’t they ? Answer is they couldn’t. They being Taylor made.

I think the difference here is that most of what Nike made for retail was terrible. Not everything-- they did make some very nice retail stuff but the vast majority was below average. The clubs they made for the tour was an entirely different story.
