No distance gap between 6 and 5 iron?

I went through this a few years ago. I finally decided that a lesson was probably in order. It turned out that I was aiming way right and coming over the top with a closed club face basically turning everything into a low lofted iron. I fixed the swing issue and got my gaps back to where they should have been. Basically, before you start tweaking clubs, have someone look at your swing.

All excellent points to consider. Probably just need to hit my hybrids a little more to alleviate the apprehension when I pull it from the bag. I just feel so much more comfortable hitting irons.

And I'm sure you're right, pulling the 5i and substituting a 5h is really all about ego and not about performance. There's no doubt that I make more mishits with the 5i than I do with any other iron in my bag. I still think this can be rectified by using it more and becoming more comfortable with it. I know the SS plays into this but I'm not the type of person to let personal limitations get in my way. I'm more than willing to put in the time and effort to fix an issue than accept it as a limitation. Don't get me wrong, I do have limitations but I don't feel that just because a 5i is 23.5 degrees I shouldn't be able to hit it well. Sometimes, I feel like the 4i is easier to hit than my 5i in the Apex CF19 line.

BTW, I wasn't specifically fit for the Apex CF19's, but I was for the Apex CF16's and when I traded in the CF16's for the CF19's I pretty much spec'd them exactly the same.

How is your yardage gap between 6 and 7? Usually that's not so great either. If that is the case, you might want to actually bend the 6 stronger and of course forget the 5. Or drop the 6 iron and just use the 5.

I had the exact same problem years ago. I had a set of irons with shafts that were High Launch (maybe True Temper) as a previous fitter said that I would benefit from something like that. Good gapping between clubs until I got between 7-6-5. I swear I was hitting them all about the same distance!

Last fitting I had, the guy was great and said those shafts are totally wrong for me and even though they Market them as High Launch - that was BS. Got fit into a different normal shaft (got new irons) and viola - normal gapping now). Not saying this may be your problem...but don't discount that you may benefit from a fitting / different shafts

I have about 10 yards between the 7 and 6, so I think I'm good there.

Really, the gap issues are only at the bottom and top end. I have about 15 yards between the PW and 9. I've substituted the PW from the Rogue X and it is closer to the 9i so that won't work. I think my best option there is to use the 9i and just swing a little easier than try to swing a little harder with the PW.

On the top end, I may put the Rogue X in for the 5i, but I'm going to do a little more comparisons with the 5i Apex vs Rogue X. Might also consider using a 4h and swinging a little easier as a replacement for the 5i.

And of course, I can always put the 5i Rogue X in the bag and use it.

One thing you might try is to jump on ebay and get a used cobra bio cell or fly z hybrid. They are amazing clubs and can be had for dirt cheap. They are adjustable, so you can order a 22-25 degree adjustable. If they don't work out, you're not out hardly any money. But I can almost guarantee you'll like them.

I had the same thought as you. The Rogue X irons were released in 2018. Because Callaway may no longer produce them doesn't make them obsolete by any stretch.

I laughed when I read he thought the Rogue X were obsolete. I bought a set when they first came out just like @jjfcpa to replace a set of Apex cf 16’s. They were regular flex.

I played them until this July when I needed to switch to Senior flex. I tried just about every iron out there, and settled on a set of PXG 0211’s.

I stumbled upon a new set of Rogue X with Senior shafts on Amazon for $560 a few weeks later and jumped on them. I returned the 0211’s and couldn’t be happier with the Rogue X.

I haven’t been able to find a better set for me in 4 1/2 years.
BTW I’m 67 years old and still hit the 5 iron 165-170, AW 100 so my gapping is almost perfect with them.

At your age, level of play and SS the Rogue X were always the best club for you.

They still are.
