2020 Honma TR20 460cc & 420cc Drivers and TR20V and TR20P Irons- In Hand Pics

Feel is fairly similar, not much in it. The P is pocket cavity so it does have a different sound, but that's only from testing indoors and there isn't much in it. Ball flight will change because of the sole width, blade length and different lofts. I don't have exact data on the two but once things are back up and running I can collect some data between the two. My gamer set was weakened to play 4* increments based off a 46* PW. I'll probably bend the 4 iron TR20P to 21 to separate the 4 and 5 a little more.

Wow not much of a market splash with these. Anyone else have any reviews on these? I can't even find a youtube review online.

I've hit all of them, currently game the TR20V irons and testing the TR20 440 8.5 driver, waiting on an adapter to put in an aftermarket shaft. What do you want to know?

Driver - super clean look // nothing on top // gloss sparkle black // silver face // round shape on 440cc // taller face // great sound, dull sound //

I'm typically 162-164 ball speed on an average day, this was 164 on average during my initial testing with the Justin Rose designed shaft in 7X. Instantly put the entire Honma range in my fitting matrix after testing it. Great looks, great feel, great group of people.

So the TR20 is more muted than the TW747? Hit one of those the other day and the sound was loud-like drivers of ten to fifteen years ago.

Just got my set in of Tr20V and wow love the look. I was worried about the long irons having too much offset but they exceed expectations the 4 iron has no visible offset and the blade lengths are smaller than my beloved Bridgestone j15cb's which is just what I wanted. A more compact smaller footprint and thinner sole. I took some comparison pics with the 6 iron. The 4 iron still has the plastic on and is the last two pics.

Thanks for that. Played the TR20 460 with Hzrdus Yellow today and liked it. Will play the TW747 Friday with the stock Vizard to compare he two.

I love the way they did the Honma badge this time. The TW series always looked a bit egalitarian to me. It's cosmetics, but I do think for irons (especially MB/CBs are basically aesthetics anyway) are pretty much the same except for the P790/PXG/i500/T-MB/HMB type irons since forever. These are sweet looking. It's going to take a while to establish that brand name. Also, I don't know if they have the marketing budget to make it. It's clear that they would need some big name guys (and I mean a lot) to get their name into US fans' minds. Rose was a start but they went away from that it seems. Get guys like Koepka, some young guns, and hope Koepka continues his hot streak and hope one of the big hitting young guns work out. Get social media influencers. Just keep fakin it till you make it is the way to go now. It seems like they are not going to take on TM, but rather try to be like Mizuno or at best Ping. They've clearly struggled last year. Look on eBay, there are tons of the 747 drivers going for 150 USD. That's the market price for them. Lower than pretty much every other brands' last year (well actually current year up til the TRs were just release) models.

I'm real tempted to make the TRs the next set of irons though. Looks amazing. And the TR drivers look a lot like the Callaway ERC drivers which is kinda cool in a retro chic way.

Thats true. Product design is a big piece too. Nike went young (and maybe just too innovative with no benefits) but left out the rest of the market. Looking back it’s always the driver that’s the halo product for the brands. It’s a tough business for sure.

Mizuno and Muira have created a nice little spot for themselves without having a massive splash in the driver market. TaylorMade and Callaway have convinced us it's all about the driver, and it's the most attractive to the general public. If I were Honma (and I'm not and I don't claim to have any experience or knowledge, this is just my opinion) I would focus on what I know will have the best chance of winning when it's in the golfers hands. That's the irons. They are great. A lot of other companies are putting out cavity back irons that have some tech inside them that causes hot spots or just don't have that old school forged feeling. The TR20V and TR20P are solid irons that I think should be on everyones list of clubs to try in 2020. The TR20 line does have strong lofts, but when they are weakened back to "standard" it takes a little offset out and they look amazing. This is the first golf season in a while that I'm really excited to get out and play because of irons.

That’s my main concern with the stronger lofts. How’s the bounce/turf interaction bending it back a degree or two?

Oddly enough the 747 was better for me. That said....the demo TR20 came with the Hzrdus Smoke Yellow and the 747 has the stock Vizard. I tried the yellow in the 747 but never did try the Vizard in the TR20.

A small part of the issue for me, I will admit,.....well actually it was two fold. One, Honma like many others, is currently closed and not shipping orders. Two was the price. They have gone to the Ping version of MAP pricing and at $649 I did not see the benefit.

Those look great but yes I would have to get the lofts weakened to play them. 43* and 44* PW’s are a bit too strong. 46* would be perfect.

Got to play a few holes today with the TR20 driver. I came away very impressed. A clean looking crown and nice classic shape. I am glad they did their proprietary shaft (Vizard) black with gold accents out of the box just holding it felt like a bomber. Also glad they did a 45.25 stock length it just feels right! First few shots it just felt fast and the face has a hot explosive feel but not loud and annoying. I would say my Srixon Z785 feels better but the Honma TR20 feels hotter. One thing I have been looking for was a driver I hit higher and carried further and I really believe I found that. I was swinging well today so I would need a full 18 holes and to play with my usual crew to determine if its a winner.

@mtex22 it looks fantastic! I’m a big fan of their equipment, especially the irons. They will probably end up being my next set. I have to say, the previous line of woods was legit as well. Keep us posted as you go along.

Thanks, I put the heavy weight in front today. It lowered the ball flight a bit and had more roll. Also better dispersion. Second outing and still very impressed with it.

I went with 60 gram. The shaft has a lot of kick in it but still stable. I need to adjust my timing to avoid going left but when I get it right its the longest I've hit. If you swing over 105mph I would go 70g. I am in the 100-105 range.
