I lived through Andrew when it hit Miami in 1992 and I can only give you this piece of advice:

If you are in the projected path of a Category 5, then just pack up and leave immediately. Do not procrastinate on that! Make no mistake, this storm will do catastrophic damage. In fact, this one is currently a 5 1/2 as I am writing this, and it is less than 24 hours from a New Orleans or Mississippi Gulf Coast landfall.

It is quite possible, you may lose virtually everything...your home, and all your worldly possessions, but at least those CAN be replaced. Do NOT put your family at risk by staying in place if you are currently living in the City of New Orleans or anywhere along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, (Biloxi, Gulfport, etc). The bowl shaped City of New Orleans is below sea level and projected to be under as much as 25 feet of water with no means to generate electricity to pump it out. The water will remain for weeks and possibly months. The levee system around New Orleans which holds back Lake Ponchetrane and the Might Mississippi River is only designed to withstand a CAT 3 at best. Katrina is an a Category 5 and and will bring a major storm surge as well as flooding rains. This hurricane is the size of Hurrincane Betsy, (1965), but with the intensity of Camille, (1969), and/or Andrew, (1992). All of those were catastrophic Events, but were not direct hits on our most vulnerable city, New Orleans.

This will impact the entire country also because of the impact to oil production. Most of this country's refineries are in the New Orleans area and we are already experiencing record high gas prices. We have already lost 500,000 barrels a day which is what is produced by the offshore oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico. All of those have been abandoned, so production has been stopped and may even be destroyed. There wasn't time to secure them properly, but there is only so much you can do with that anyway. Will we soon see $5 per gallon gas? Even gas rationing? With the potential of loss of life being so high, nobody wants to spend too much time on the economics issues, but they are something we will have to deal with.

If you recall, Andrew, hit homes built to the stringent South Florida Hurricane code but it didn't matter. Concrete Block Structure, (CBS), homes were reduced to complete rubble. So what chance do the much older, (non code), homes and buildings in New Orleans stand in winds projected to be 180 mph. (Basically thats a very large F3 tornado some 50 miles wide that just stays on top of you many, many, hours as opposed to being gone in just a few minutes).

Miami endured Katrina as a minimal Category 1 Hurricane just a few days ago and many parts of southern Miami Dade County remain under water today. A million people are still without power there as they suffer in flooded homes. There wasn't much structural damage with the lower 75 mph winds and the better building code here, but falling trees took out power in big way. The flooding has done massive damage, so you can't ever under-estimate even a Category 1 hurricane.

Leave while you can! :clapping: May the prayers be with you!

I need a prayer here as we are in the direct path of this monster.

I hope by now you have high-tailed it outta there. Wishing you and everyone else in the path the best. When I was reminded by the news that NO is below sea level it really hit me how bad this could get. After it's over and you read this please give us a shout to let us know you and your family are alright.

Only now, Tuesday, 8/30, are we finding out just how bad this disaster really was for the City of New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Only today, did the helicopters get up to survey the terrible damage and the worst case scenarios are now being found. (It was like this for Hurricane Andrew in 1992 too. Took a few days to find out just how bad it was).

The City of New Orleans which is essentially "bowl shaped" contines to fill with water from the breaches in the levees that hold back Lake Ponchatraine. (Yesterday, everyone felt the water had already peaked, but not so. Today the disaster is expanding because the water in the bowl is still rising at an alarming rate. As of this moment, 80% of the City is now under water and they don't know how to stop it. The core of Engineers has not yet even come up with a workable plan to hold back the remaining water still spilling in from the Lake. One idea is to fill boxcars with sand and use Crane Barges to get them to the site so these boxcars can be dropped into the breaches. Nobody knows if that is really feasible. Some of the breaches in the levee's are as wide as 300 feet now and keep enlarging more as the water pours in. To make matters worse, the city's pumping systems which worked for awhile on backup generators have now shut down.

There is absoutely no communcation in the City of New Orleans now, (no landline phone service and no working cellphone network. A few of the media personnel have satellite phones but that is it. Those trapped and suffering can't communciate with anyone. There are also multiple fires buring the tops of multiple homes even as they sit in water, perhaps some were set intentionally to try and signal help.

So many of the city's houses are now completely under water that is feared that countless numbers of people may have died because they were trapped in their homes by the rising water. Many had installed plywood or hurricane shutters on the outsides of their windows which now has cut off all escape routes out their homes. Some have been rescued from their attics by having the Coast Guard Personnel by taking an ax to their roof to free them.

The City of New Orleans now has no power, and no fuel. Its citizens have no homes, no water, and no food. The water's contamination is very severe now, a true bio-hazard. (Keep in mind New Orleans is below sea level with above ground cemetaries). Worse still, sewers have emptied their contents into the water and there is gasoline and oil from thousands of sunken cars. Adding to the mix, snakes, Alligators, rodents, rabid animals and colonies of fire ants are also floating in these waters, and yes human corpses both new and old. Mosquitos and flies torment everyone along with wasps and other stinging insects who were displaced by the flood waters. Infectious diseases are sure to follow these hardous water exposures. The Hopitals in New Orleans no longer have working generators, so patients are also dying and trapped by the rising water. There is now only one passable road in or out of the city and the Governor hopes it can somehow be preserved for emergency vehicles trying to rescue all the stranded people before it is too late.

Believe it or not, things are actually WORSE in some areas of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. You have probably already heard about Biloxi and Gulfport being totally devastated but beyond that there are still (3) entire COUNTIES that nobody has even been able to get into yet because of impassable roadways. Who knows how many have died there? Bay Saint Louis Mississippi and Grand Isle Louisiana are just (2) of the places where the very worst is feared.

It is now clear that Hurricane Katrina is one of the very worst disasters of all time on American soil. In fact, the cost of this one will likely dwarf the costs of ALL previous hurricanes combined when the final toll can be tallied.

The Governor of New Orleans just asked that tomorrow, (Wed, 8/31), be made a national day of prayer. In some cases, it seems that is all that can be done for many people now. There is simply not enough access or manpower to rescue everyone and who knows how much longer the survivors can hold out in these hellish conditions. Submerged or surrounded by contaminated water, 100 degree heat, no drinkable water, no food, etc).

This is now being called the American Tsunami, and sadly that may be the case. :clapping:

Please contribute to the Red Cross if you can. This is much worse than first imagined. The word devastation is not even a strong enough word to describe the kind of suffering and hopeless we are witnessing today.

Unbelievable the damage. Prayers to all that are touched by this storm. And pray it won't be like last year in Florida, three in a row.

32076[/snapback]

Unbelievable is an understatement. Watching the news is depressing. Every time I send an email to a friend in the south, I feel like an idiot with whatever comment I make because an hour later you find out things are getting worse down there.

I sure hope we hear from Profiler soon and beyond that will all need to support however we can relief efforts.

This goes for the c*cks*ckers that run the oil companies. I am all for paying $4 a gallon for gas in sunny CA, just so long as you thieves are all for putting all your profits for the next three months towards relief efforts. That would be a good start.
