Taylormade r540 xd TP

Found a TM r540 xd TP head on EBay for cheap money, only God knows if it's truly legit but it was worth taking the chance. I tend to have slightly higher spin numbers due to my swing, not terrible but maybe 300-400 higher due to swing. Please don't answer with fix the swing, I have a bad back and unless I have surgery this is the swing I have to live with.

So here's the question, what shaft would you suggest with this head? Guy at the local golfsmith said that some of the newer shafts might not work well with the older style head, something about the mass being different even though it's close in terms of cc's.

I swing anywhere between 94-101 depending on the back and I have a relatively smooth transition down. Pretty little bump forward with the hip (which is coincidently the only pretty thing about my swing) so hit me with the ideas.

One issue to be aware of is that many of these heads coming up on ebay lately are light as have not been weighted appropriately, check weight first before getting into shaft recommendarions as can effect how shaft plays according to flex. The 540xd TP heads, due to somewhat shallower face depth, c.o.g. location, tend to launch a bit higher and spin more than some more modern heads, so many players tended to go down in loft slightly from other heads. The individual swing is the important factor so YMMV. As far as a modern shaft not working well in that head, somebody is giving you gross misinformation. I can see a clubmaker stating a cheaper shaft may be a better option for a player's swing or so customer may not invest exorbitant amount into older club if does not like shaft , but the statement that modern shaft would not work in that club due to design of club would send me looking for more knowledgeable assistance.
Membership could help further with suggestions if knew current set-up that you state spins a bit too much.

Sounded like a line when he said that about the shafts. I was thinking along the lines of a ust pro v2 since it was close to the pro gold 65 that was an option. I also wasn't aware of the spin on the head, I somehow thought it was a low spin head but forgot that compared to today's drivers it wouldn't be close.

I got one of these heads as well. I've already given mine the cotton ball treatment to get the headweight to 203. Scored a project x 5.5 to install into it. Will be playing it @ 44.75" . I've finally accepted that I have never hit 460 cc heads well.. I've had many combos with this head and can certainly state it is more of a mid launch, mid spin head. Along with adding weight you need to measure the depth of the hosel also. TM tour heads from this generation tend to have a shallow bore ( mine is 1.25"), which make tipping important if u want the shaft to play true to flex. I like this head so much I've got another waiting to be refinished....

And the guy was feeding u some absolute BS about the shaft. I've had success with the following shafts in this head...

Matrix mfs 65N and Fujikura speeder 553 when I was a bit younger and stronger....my ss is closer to yours now (98-102) and smooth. Fujikura zcom mw54 works very well in this head if u prefer a light shaft but they can be hard to find these days.....I've got one waiting for my other head when I get it refinished...I think the project x 5.5 is gonna work well in this head...at the very least it will be a cheap experiment as these shafts are going for $15-25 on the bay at the moment...

You could try the 5.5 untipped and might work with your swingspeed..
5.5 is sorta between reg and stiff....installing it in the shallow bore untipped will make it play closer to reg and the project x should lower your spin a bit as well..
Definitely worth a shot at the prices they are now. I still see them in catalogs for $150...

I'll be interested to hear how it turns out...just make sure to get that headweight up via cotton balls, yarn, hot melt, etc....

Curious about these. I saw a couple dozen R540 and R580 XD TP heads pop up lately.
Does the R580 XD TP play anything like a '07 Burner TP?
[/quote]

580 XD/TP definitely spins more....In my experience it is the highest spinning of the 500 series TM drivers...

Just received the head today. Looks legit is it's a fake they at least put an effort in building. Head is really light, am going to have to add weight like you said.

Just curious about that head......does it have the T-serial number or the B stamp? Just wondered with that light weight if it was totally raw and untested.

My head had the T stamp as well as the B stamp ...compared it to my other one and its 100% legit....mine weighed in @ 187 grams ....added enough cotton balls to get it to 203...project x 5.5 tipped 1/2" and 44 7/8..black widow edge grip and it swingweights @ D4...

Make sure to check the bore depth also...mine was 1.25" hence the 1/2" tipping to get it to play true to flex.

Older TM heads and Speeder 757 are like peanut butter and jelly, Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky, Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon, Ford and Mustang, and salt and pepper.
