Detroit Area Golfers

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there are others from the Detroit area that would enjoy sharing their home course, favorites courses, recommended courses, stories and such in this thread.

Home course-Rammler

Other Courses I play-Greystone, Golden Hawk, Fieldstone, Twin Lakes, Black Heath, Stoney Creek, Boulder Pointe, Rackham, etc.

Favorite courses I like (not necessarily in the Detroit area) - Eagle Eye, Arcadia Bluffs, Moose Ridge, Boulder Pointe

Thanks

moose ridge is the most gimmicky course Ive ever played. Spent last summer in MI. The greens were very difficult as well.
Sheppards Hallow was great. Devils Ridge was well worth the 30 bucks.
Ambassador is Windsor was amazing but $$$.
In what way was it gimicky? I played in the fall and enjoyed it. I have only played it once, and maybe shouldn't have included it in my favorites, but it did come across as a nice course to play. Boulder Pointe is probably a true fav of mine.
thanks

The greens were just way to undulating and a few of the holes were blind completely. I hated it.
Like I said, I only played it once, and almost forget the layout. I don't like blind holes either, I agree with you, I just don't remember the course that well, I just remembered I liked it when I played it. Thanks for you comment though.

What is The Orchards like? If you had to choose one, Shepherds Hallow or The Orchards? Any comments on both are welcome.

Absolutely love Moose Ridge. It's one of those courses that you could immediately replay after your first round there and shoot 3 strokes better from course knowledge alone.I believe its "tricky" maybe... not gimmicky.
Somewhat equally nice, both deserve a play! They are both rated highly, kept up nice, and present a good challenge. I like them both!

Last summer and fall I played it. Several greens had some disease of some sort, that said it's a must play. It's a lot like the Grande in Jackson. A bit more spread out. It's a solid top 40 in Michigan. I only make the drive from Lansing if the price is right. Wouldn't pay rack rate.

I have played all the courses above except moose ridge. Cherry creek is a solid course. Twin Lakes, Blackheath, Devils Ridge, Shepherds Hollow, Orchards, Greystone are all awesome but I only play them once in a while. If anyone wants to play this season let me know. I live in Harrison Twp. I'm up to play any course if I have the day off work.
Hello TB, you must not live that far from Selfridge Air Base, i'm over in Sterling Heights. I play Rammler, Golden Hawk, etc frequently, and maybe we could get together for an outing. Right now it is looking a little bleak because my shoulder is acting up, as if I have a rotator cuff injury. I am having a hard time just holding my arm out sideways due to pain. I went to the doctors yesterday and he is sending me to an Orho sugeon. #@&%!, long winter and then this, it's almost got me in tears.

I hear Maple Lane Golf course is opening this Monday, along with a few others.

The good old Maple Stain. Shoot by the time the courses open this season they will be charging summer rates

Very nice course. Top 10 in the metro area. Each hole is pretty much separate from the the other. Look for deals (i.e. www.lessonongolf.com, www.groupgolfer.com ) as it is a bit pricey. Pick the right tee as the course can bite you if you choose poorly.

My only issues are that one can't walk (impossible considering the layout) and they tend to over water. I have played after 14 days w/o rain and still get mudballs.

I use Group Golfer, they seem to have a host of specials. I get a featured course every couple of days. I bought 3 for Greystone for $35/ea that can be used on weekends when it is $55. It's best to watch for them when they come out and anticipate whether you want to play a particular course. Greystone is one of our fav's to play, so we jumped on that deal.

Moose Ridge falls into the category of "ninja warrior course", it's difficult from any tee box and you must be perfect when hitting select shots. Could be a drive, and approach, or putting even. I love the course for the challenge, and the good conditions. However, I can see where people would hate this course.

After playing 14 holes (7 twice) at Ann Arbor's Huron Hills yesterday, I decided today to take my shag bag to a local park and work on the irons. Some of the low end courses should be opening soon. Anyone know for sure which courses are open or waiting?
A friend of mine told me he played Rackham today. He said it was wet, and the greens weren't in very good shape, but that is what I would expect anywhere around here. There hasn't been any weather to start the growing process yet. I enjoy Rackham, it provides a decent challenge with some long par 3's and 4's. Golf is right around the corner!

There were guys out at Chandler Park on Friday. I don't know if its officially open or if they just jumped the fence though.

Rackham and Chandler are open. They're posting tee times on Golfnow. if you look through the Detroit section on the website there's a few courses opening around

Played Riverview Highlands this past Saturday and Sunday. Obviously the course is nothing special, and pretty wet when you're not in the fairway. The way I look at it, if I'm playing in March, I'm happy no matter what the conditions are.

Wow... I have always thought Moose Ridge was super solid. While I will concede that there are a few holes that are a bit over the top ....
But Devils Ridge is straight tricked up. One of the most target-iey courses I have ever played.

I guess we disagree.
