Speaking of walking, saw this in my confirmation email from Dubs. Is it true I can walk it with a caddy rather than take a cart? Anyone ever do this?

Caddies are available by reservation June 1st through August 15th. Please reserve at least 48 hours in advance. The caddie fee is an additional $20.00, plus optional tip.

Is this on top of the $155 or is there a walking rate plus $20?

I have to assume it's on top of the $155, given the low caddy fee. They probably take the built-in cart fee, and apply it towards the caddy.

That's what I would assume as well. I would love to take one but they paired me with two randoms so I don't want to be "that guy" and take a caddy while they take carts.
I have no problem with that. I've used a caddy a few times where the others in the group used a cart. Of course, I get just a little irked that the caddy helps them out by raking bunkers, helping with lines, etc, and they don't give the caddy a token tip.

If you figure the typical cart fee costs $15, then you're only looking at $35 for a caddy, which is a bargain. I've paid $80 to $120 for a caddy at a high-end course, so paying $35 to haul my bag around while I get to enjoy the walk through the woods is a deal. 'Count me in.

Couldn't agree more. We paid $55/bag plus tip at Erin Hills and considering the length of that track, it's a bargain.

What's the biggest hike from green to tee in the area? The walk from the #1 green to the #2 tee, and the return from #17 to #18 at Water's Edge is quite a hike, taking you under the Harlem Cal/Sag bridge.
If you find yourself playing Water's Edge these days you'd be better off just jumping into the Cal/Sag river rather than finishing your round. Never in all my life seen a course go to s*** over a 10 year period as rapidly as Waters Edge. Gotta be the only course ever to have on cart state of the art GPS and then remove it. Once you have that in the cart how much does it really cost to maintain it? A subscription fee?
Lol. When was the course ever not sh*t? It's not a bad layout, but the drainage has always sucked. Too many holes are saturated throughout the playing season.

With the proliferation of handheld GPS and lasers, the need for cart-mounted GPS has diminished. There are a few courses that have removed the units. I'm assuming the subscription fee can be fairly large, and if they feel it's not bringing in any additional revenue, then out it goes.
Arg, believe it or not, Waters Edge used to be nice. GPS in the cart (before anyone really had it), greens that weren't covered in ball marks, fairways that weren't destroyed, tee boxes that didn't weren't overgrown, a range that had grass instead of dirt and lets not forget the kids who would run out the 18th green and clean your clubs. Then the recession hit and the town of Worth got hit hard. Ever since then the course has gone to s***. I used to love that course despite the awful layout of the first hole.

I agree. I played it years ago, and it was in much better shape. Over the years, you could see the slow decline.

I don't have a problem with #1. It's certainly not an easy starting hole. You can't go right, or you'll wind up in the trees. A pulled shot will be blocked from making a decent shot to the layup area over the creek, and too long a tee shot will catch the bunker. I generally hit a 3 wood off the tee, and a 5 wood to carry the creek. After that, the green is a pussycat.

3 wood seems like too much club for the tee shot. I always remember it as a 180 yard layup which is a shot I hate for my first shot of the round.

Now for polar opposite I nominate Shepard's Crook as having the best opening hole. Short and easy par 4 wide fairway and room to give in the rough in either direction. Second shot is a less than 100 yards to a slightly elevated large green. Green itself is not easy, but no greens on SC are easy. But, overall I love that as an opening hole. It eases you into the round and almost makes up for the lack of driving range. Second hole isn't much tougher aside from a tough green to get to if the pin is in the back left where it usually is. I like to think it was an intentional design decision to make the first couple holes straightforward in light of the fact that there's no range.

I walked Glenview Park GC yesterday, and was quite frustrated. For starters, it's yet another course that doesn't mow a walking path from the teebox to the fairway, so if you have a pushcart, you're huffing it through thick rough to get to the fairway.

Second, what's with the railroad ties? Too many tee areas and cartpath borders are boxed with railroad ties, making it a PITA for pushcarts. At a minimum, a few strategic openings would be nice, thank you.

Finally, the routing is completely squirrely. There's one cartpath intersection that has , what, 6 paths coming and going? Luckily the distance between the holes is not far, but they almost need a traffic light at the junction. :taunt:

I play there only because a friend lives right there, otherwise, I would never. Glencoe and Sunset are better, and I bet the "new" Willmette will be too. I'd rather play Winnetka over Glenview Park, and I hate Winnetka.

I tried to walk Highland Park Golf Club a few weeks ago. One of the old dudes working the cart barn got all huffy at me when I told him I wanted to walk. He growled something about pace of play, which we all know is BS. Just call a spade a spade and say that they need the revenue. I totally get that they are their to make money, but don't try to tell me that walking causes a pace of play issues. It is such a walkable course too.

Not sure if anyone is equally pathetic and listens to the golf show on 670AM on Saturday morning. They had the head of the CDGA, IPGA and Kemper Sports Management talking about "the state of the game."

One of the topics they got to was pace and more specifically the enforcement of it by rangers. In no uncertain terms, the Kemper guy talked about encouragement of slow players but not taking action to put players in position. He said they can't afford to lose more golfers.

I tried to call in to ask about those golfers who avoid certain courses because of the pace policy but the show ended. As one of the largest course management companies it was disappointing to hear that as their approach.

Encouragement should always be the first step. The 2nd step should be to move players back into position. The 3rd step should be removal from the course. If the ranger is doing his job, it should *never* get to step 2. I'm simple astonished that gaps of one or two holes can open on the course without the ranger being aware, especially on courses with GPS in the carts. The position of every cart is tracked by the syste, and an alert should be sent to the ranger.

I completely agree with your assessment. The courses that allow slow play will certainly have their share of slow players, but those of us who play on pace will refuse to come back. I simply do not understand the mentaility of a business that wants to avoid pissing off 4 people in a group, and as a result, pisses off the dozens of players behind them. They must have rocks in their heads.

I walked 18 at Glenwoodie yesterday. I'm getting really tired of courses that don't mow a walking path from the teebox to the fairway. On top of that, they had ropes strung across the front of the fairway (to direct the carts to the edges) on numerous holes, forcing us walkers with push carts to walk around them. Seriously, is it too much to ask to put a 3 foot gap in the ropes to allow the walkers access to the fairway?
