Maxfli Carbon Fiber Graphite Woods

Hey Guys,

 

Ran across something interesting on the 'bay today, and bought it, for no reason other than the auction was ending, and I thought they'd look good with my Australian Blades.

 

 

 

 

 

Anyone know anything about these? Tad, were these around when you were at Maxfli?

 

To me, looking at the Maxfli logo, and thinking back to when we started seeing carbon fibre, I'm guessing these were late 80's early 90's - an alternative to metal woods for those who wanted new tech, but still with a solid persimmon feel.

I believe you are correct on the dates. I refer to that as the crossover years. Some of us were still playing persimmon and some had switched to metal. My wife who does not play that much has a Mizuno carbon fiber driver she picked it out of a mess of clubs we had at the shop because she thought it was pretty

Thanks for the compliments guys, and the ID HAB. Very interesting the size of the driver considering their vintage....it looks pretty large.

Got a feeling the faces and soles will polish up real pretty. I wonder what they're like to hit?

Edit: LOL, just noticed in the first photo you can see "Black Missile" in reverse off the reflection of the door. DUH.

These are compression molded so remember that what is not graphite is plastic. They feel ok. Nice find

I like the looks of those, kind of a new old school retro look to them. Nice pickup Scooter. Gives us a update once you have smacked a few balls with them. Note to self, add these to my ever expanding list of clubs to be on the lookout for.

A smartphone and google is a wonderful thing when standing at a thrift store's club bin.

So does that mean these have a high cycolac content? I once got a Northwestern cycolac 1W and 3W with a set of clubs and they were not very good. That is being charitable.

[/quote]You know you brought up the $10,000 question I do not recall ever having done one of those. I may get my wife's before mentioned driver wait does anyone have a spare couch? I will look around the thrifts this weekend and see If i can find one and try it may be better for my health and maritial relationship that way

[/quote] I have done several with low heat and hydralic shaft puller, low heat and patience is the key

Good job. I'm genuinely surprised that the head conducts enough heat to melt the epoxy before damage to the neck sets in. I'd have assumed that if these were serviceable at all, it would have been a very careful job drilling the old shaft out.

Although I have a hydraulic shaft puller, my lack of patience remains one of the reasons I prefer woods with steel shafts. I had a heat gun, but I burnt it out trying to reshaft a 975D!

Birly, it could take 15 minutes or more of slow heat, not fun, I cant remember why I did them, must have been bored!!

I guess it would depend on how high the graphite content is.

If it has a high plastic content, then melt-a-roonies.

If it has a high graphite content, graphite can absorb a very high amount of heat before breaking down. In the type of nuclear reactor the Soviets used (like at Chernobyl), they used graphite as an insulator for fuel rods.
