Saw scratch dropping off a huge fitting bag at miles of golf yesterday, good business decision for them.

The X5 is a pretty sick putter, better than most of the other mallet Scotty's. Does anyone know if you get the 38" counter balance can you just chop off a couple inches and the weight to make it conventional if you don't like it?

It is supposed to have a 50g counterweight in butt end..haven't taken one apart to see size of the weight. i assuming it is a plug, so at 50 g it won't be too long. how it's held in is also unknown. if it's glued it's no prob to remove.
You also need to remember that the head comes in at 400g (which is pretty substantial) so if you take the counter out, the SW will be huge. the shorter you make it the more SW you will lose, and then you could probably also change the weights in the head to lighten it up a little more.
I like heavy putters and like what you are thinkin with this one if you don't like the full length version

Anyone else dumb enough to go out and play today? I played The Classic at a Fox Hills, and was amazed by how many people were out today. Had to clear ice chunks out of my line several times, and my towel froze, but I was pretty comfortable, and actually hit the ball great. Swing changes are starting to click, just in time for when I won't be able to play anymore.

Yes, I was out at Fox Hills, too. Played 29 holes. Played well although I was clubbing up probably 2 clubs. I suspect the turkey donation event might have brought some people in but more likely the crowd was because Fox Hills is one of the few courses that will stay open with partially frozen greens.

Also, I totally agree that it was very comfortable out there. I wore a couple light layers and a rainshirt with a sock hat.

I seem to always move backwards a year or 2 when it comes to buying equipment. My recent purchases are a TEE XCG6 driver, great deal from Divot.com $99 brand new. Bought the driver on a whim and it turned out to be a great fit for me. So driver was so nice I decided to try a CB5 fairway wood, that one was not such a great fit. Recently poached a minty XCG6 fairway off of EBAY and am looking forward to a trip to Miles this week to try her out. With all the chatter about the new Titleist offerings thought I'd share a frugle club ho take on buying new stuff, or stuff new to me.

I think I'm going to sell my Byron DH89. I just don't need 3 putters, and I seem to putt better with the 612 and 007, which are both a little heavier. If anyone is interested, let me know.

350g head weight
Red iomic grip
Red Club Byron Magnetic cover
Loft and lie are standard -- I think 70* lie and 3* loft
Has a couple of little dings put there by a caddie at Muirfield Village :censored2: . Minor, but annoying.

Pics, if interested, are in the first page of my WITB thread linked in my sig.

You and my dad should join forces. He's been struggling for years with his pitching, chipping, and sand game. His big problems are taking too big of a backswing and decelerating into the ball, coupled with a way too steep angle of attack. That's a recipe for some really inconsistent contact. And I don't even know what he does in the sand, but it's far from textbook, that's for sure.

OW went to see ITeach I think it was, thought of that the other day when reading a thread on here. Someone was saying after seeing him they couldn't chip for s***, and had a miss almost like a pop up straight right that only went a few feet. I'm thinkin "I've seen that shot before".

OW is the new video same principles? I like the theory for the high soft shot but the hinge and hold is still my go to on 80% of chip shots.

When I do much hinging on the takeaway on chips, I tend to come into the ball too steep, so with any standard chip where I have some green to work with, I just take it back with minimal hinge (there's a little wrist break, and I'm not actively inhibiting my wrists from bending), and it's just kind of a sweep of the ball off the turf. I rarely mis-hit it with that technique, and it's predictable how the ball will behave. The loft of the club does the work, and I don't get those unpredictable spinners that will sometimes grab after the first bounce when I don't want it to do that. With bad lies and situations where you need to stop it quick, I have to hit other shots, and I can do that, but like you said, this technique works for 80% of the chips I encounter.

Do any of you guys use the technique where you switch clubs depending on the length of the chip or are you like me, and use one or two clubs? I use my 58* wedge for probably 75% of chips and almost all greenside bunker shots. I use the 54 for longer chips. I've never been able to get the feel for chipping with an 8 iron, for example.

Iteach teaches a very ball forward, engage the bounce, chipping technique. He teaches to play the shot with the ball positioned off the left armpit. Teaches to think of releasing the club towards the target, not towards the ground, this is a shallowing move. Another way to think of it is to keep the thumbs pointing down, club head remains below hands on the follow thru. Try it, this is what happens. Thumbs go down, handle has to go up. When handle goes up, club head has to go down=shallow. Plenty of videos of Dan on youtube demonstrating this technique if anyone is interested. Important to remember this is a chipping technique, good out to about 40 yds. Teaches to use a little more wrist hinge the farther the ball needs to travel. Teaches to vary the face from square to open to closed to control trajectory.

The Wedge project video referenced is more of a short to mid distance pitching technique. Author advocates a very shallow angle as well. Has different swing thoughts on how to achieve, but there are similarities to both. This author, Andrew Rice is very emphatic that if a player has a pitching technique that works, DON"T change. Lots of them work, finding the one that fits the player is the trick.

Convinced 90% of my issue is anxiety driven. I can make all kinds of different techniques work well during practice. Took a long time to become a good putter trying differing styles, strokes, mindsets. I will become a better than average chipper/pitcher...just don't know when.lol

I've never been able to chip/pitch with anything less than a SW (54-56*). I use my 60* for 95% of the shots from inside 75 yards. Not the ideal approach, but it is the club that I am most comfortable with. I also very very rarely mis-hit it.

I don't think one technique is necessarily better than the other. It seems like people who are feel players (I put myself in that category -- interested in the technical aspects, but have to feel it to "get" it) prefer the approach of using one or two clubs and varying distance control by hitting different shots with the same club, and people who are more technique-driven, like the approach of making basically the same swing with different clubs and controlling distance based on club choice. To me, that has always sounded good in theory, and I'm definitely a technical/logical/process oriented person in a lot of other aspects of my life, but I just haven't ever been able to get on board with that method.

I tried the hinge and hold for awhile, plus some of Dave Pelz, and a little Stan Utley for good measure.....what I found was that I became too mechanical. It jacked me up.

To get my swing back, I spent a winter working in a hitting bay just hitting for contact. Didn't care what the ball did (ok I wanted it going up and straight into the net), but what did matter was the sound I heard. Ball first, then mat. An entire Michigan winter of that has made me a MUCH better short game player.

Oh, and to 3JP's question, I used to be a one or two wedge guy, but I've started experimenting this year with different clubs depending on the distance and slope of the green. Still need more work at this, but seems like it has some promise

OW - check out Monte's wedge videos too. He advocates the "use the bounce" method. Personally hinging doesn't work for me. I like the Zach Johnson type of chip (does that have a name?) When I hinge it just feels too flippy and like I'm hitting some kind of lob shot.

3JP - for greenside stuff I used a 54* almost all the time, only time I changed was for a short sided chip or close bunker shot then I used my 58*. For those flat 30-40 footers from the fairway I started using an 8 iron or 9 iron and doing a bump and run type shot. I found on the longer shots I always came up short and the ball always checked to much using wedges. I just need to learn to hit the ball closer on my approaches and my wedge woes will go away!

I just got 2 new Scratch wedges - a 52* and a 58* and then snowmagedeon hit so I haven't hit them outside yet. Huge change for me dropping the gap wedge! My goal this winter is to dial in the Pelz clock method to get my distances right. Next year greenside I'm thinking its going to be the 58* most of the time. Should be interesting....
