Back to life, back to reality (blades for me)

I grew up playing blades (what choice did we have?). I tried some cavity backs from Dynacraft or Golfworks in the early 90s, and liked them -- but they weren't SGI. But now I'm the opposite of Richard, I look down at that thin top line, and my mind says, "Gee, this is going to sting when I miss it." Am I a better player after playing all sorts of GI/SGI heads these last 20 years -- NO, I'm worse. But I'm too screwed up to go back :swoon2:

Combo set for me. Love the blades, but a blade 3 iron....tough stuff. And it is much about confidence, as so many others have said. Just my opinion. And I agree....telling someone else what they should play.....well, that's something I've stopped trying to do. Figured out I was wrong and they were right....because that's the only truth that can be when it comes to clubs.

I may have neutered myself somewhat by giving up a stick shift for an automatic....but the blades are staying in the bag.
[/quote]LOL I have not been that neutered yet I have a 5 speed manual in my pickup and drive a 10 speed Mack 5 days a week and on occasion a 15 speed Western Star when the Mack is sick :to_become_senile:

Always been more of a blade guy. I am awaiting delivery on my next set -- Callaway Apex MB's. Tried the Apex Pros but found them clunky on impact. I don't think I was ever sold on them. I don't play as much as I used to so I was looking for a little more forgiveness but coming off Titleist 695 MB's and Mizuno MP33's I realized how important the feel and feedback is to me. I do believe that players irons make you a better ball striker. They make you focus more and this results in more quality strikes.

I would like to try these with graphite shafts, hmmm, may do that this winter

My only experience with graphite in an iron was with the previously mentioned FG-17's. I inexplicably decided to shaft up the 2 iron head I had with a Aldila NV I had laying around. I took it to the range, attempted to supply a mighty swing and proceeded to carve up a beaver pelt about the size of my golf towel, dribbled the ball out about 20 feel (all roll...no carry), and snap the shaft off in the head.

That simultaneously put an end to both my efforts as a club builder, and user of 2 irons. My opinions regarding graphite in irons are....divided.

I have for the last 15 years played a set of FG-17s shafted with Harrison 2.0 Graphite shafts off and on. Very easy to hit longer irons as the 4 iron is 26 degrees loft ;)

Blades play very well on harder turf or dry grass....less well on lush verdant fairways imo.

I transitioned to MP69 with kbs c taper shafts from my old ping i3 and love everything about them! The MB just cuts thru the dirt like butta!

Like one person said on here these clubs do everything you tell them to do. If you mess up it will reflect with each shot but when you're on your shiz like you should be it will tell you.
