Nothing wrong with being a member of a private club. Best thing I ever did was joining my club and I love the opportunity it provides to play other private courses. There are a ton of other benefits that have been covered ad naseum in multiple other threads.

Unfortunately some mid-tier private courses like Weston perpetuate the snobby, stuck-up stereotype country club image. Not sure why. I have played it a few times and each time the reception has been less than welcoming. Heck it's a pretty average, underwhelming course so not sure where the attitude comes from! By contrast I have played other New England courses with much better reputations and courses e.g Winchester, Myopia, Essex, Boston Club etc and they are WAY friendlier and not stuck up at all...

Just wouldn't be my thing is all. Yes, it would be cool to be able to play nice courses. But it just wouldn't be for me.

Also, a $45,000 initiation fee is "mid range"!?

Funny, I was thinking the same.

If $45K is considered mid-range for an initiation fee, then I must be poorer than I thought. Haha.

We have a few private clubs in my area that have a $2-3K initiation and they are pretty nice clubs.

Sorry I should have qualified. My mid-tier comment was more applied to my opinion of the club and courses rating and reputation as compared to other New England private clubs. You have to remember that Westin is a very affluent area so there will be plenty of people living in and around there prepared to pay that inflated kind of cash for such a mediocre course. There is another course nearby called Pinebrook which is quite a bit more expensive but at least it can boast the best course conditions in MA.

Unfortunately New England privates around Boston are expensive and/or very difficult to get in e.g Winchester.

You also have a couple (like one out past Short Pump) that are @ $150K, too. ;) I hear it's a great course, btw.

This article was completely uninformative. The couple "attempted to wear denim?" But then they weren't wearing denim "at the time?" What does any of that even mean? Stupid.

You mean Kinloch? I've never played it. I have a good friend who caddies there and has promised to get a group of us out there for the past two years.

I guess I'm going to have to threaten him in order for him to get us out. :hunter:

That's a good point that I didn't catch. Maybe they had the gall to have some denim in their possession as they had just done some shopping?

It does seem strange and the fact that the report mentions 10 members being disciplined. Would love to know the real story here - may have to chat to some local pros and members to see if they have more info!
The type of snobbery that exists at some clubs makes me ill.

I can understand people being snobs at Augusta or Oakmont.

But most of these clubs are not even in the same world as those and they are still snobs.

I laugh at them.

It's just funny, same goes for cargo pants and shorts. I've been at a muni course and wasn't allowed to play because I had cargo shorts, khaki cargo shorts. Not even crappy shorts, they were nice ones, lol. It was in Lynn, in April, to boot for people who know Mass. Total opposite of affluent Weston for people who aren't familiar.

Agreed - but believe me it's better here in the US than some of the clubs in the UK I have played.

My sisters course back home is one of top clubs north east of London It's a great course, with some good young members and I had a lot of fun playing there but some of their "traditional rules" -Sheez. All the usual dress rules stuff plus if you wear shorts you have to wear socks that come up to your knees. Personally I don't think men and Footjoy DNAs look good rocking Paula creamer knee-highs :). My favorite though that made me do an out loud WTF and then LOL was when I was told I was not allowed to carry my golf bag in front of the clubhouse patio to get to the practice chipping green. Seriously!. You have to walk back around the clubhouse the long way and through the car park. As you do that you pass the odd old/ traditional codger staggering back to their cars in their shiny Blazers and old creased up pants that are short of their ankles. I had to laugh and be thankful members are allowed to wear smart jeans in the grill room at my US club :)

I wonder about this story. I would never wear jeans to a golf course, but my daughters do have denim jackets that they wear with nice dresses. It's not uncommon in the fall in the south to see ladies wearing summery/sun dresses with denim jackets thrown on their shoulders. I never thought of that as inappropriate ala blue jeans, but maybe it is. Hmmmm.

I think most up-scale public tracks have no jeans, no cargos rules and require a collared shirt. I am thinking courses like Pinehills, Red Tail, Waverly, Granite Links, Crumpin Fox, Ledges etc I have not played nor know of Gannon so cannot comment on whether the no cargos rule makes sense or not. Personally I don't care if people wear them as long as the pockets don't bulge out too much!

I've worn cargos at Pinehills, Crumpin Fox, and The Ledges. No one said anything. I can only remember once having anything said about my cargos and that was at a small 9 hole course in N. Providence that my brother lives on - Louisquisset Golf Club. I had to put on a pair of my brother's shorts and hos waist is quite a bit larger than mine ...

Ok I stand corrected! Actually cargo shorts is one dress rule they do strictly enforce at my course. The pro shop does a good trade in selling golf shorts to unsuspecting guests. As I say it doesn't really bother me...

I don't really understand the restriction on cargo shorts. In my opinion it's like they were made for golfers, to be honets. There's a pocket for tee's, a pocket for a spare ball or two, a pocket for my wallet, another for my ball marker. Talk about convenient!

I would rather see someone on a course wearing nice jeans or cargo shorts, rather than someone in battered Kahki's.

I understand that people should look presentable, especially at some of the high-end courses, but some of the dress codes are what makes people look at golf as an elitist sport.

I'm off to play at our private today.....in jeans.

I'm just glad I'm in a ag community where no one gives jeans a second look.
I think most courses I play don't care about the jeans. A few do. But I would think that in April or November (when I'd be wearing jeans vs shorts) that they'd be happy to have any paying customer.

Nobody but the author is complaining about the no jeans policy.

No jeans policy is standard at a lot of clubs - as determined by their members and/or Board.

And several top 100 clubs in the US allow jeans in some or all parts of their clubhouses. I have never been to a club that allowed jeans on the course though.
