So I'm looking for a little advice here. Some background info: I'm a new player who is currently using a set of 20 year old hand-me-down Bridgestone Joe's model irons.

I'm looking into buying a new set of irons to replace these. I know traditional wisdom says I should just buy a decent used set of other more modern clubs off craigslist/ebay/2ndswing/etc for cheap or just continue using these old irons and invest the money in lessons and then after I have my swing and game more consistent I can upgrade by getting fitted.

However, I'm in a little more of a unique situation here given I do have access to the Nike employee store to get a set of irons for cheaper and who knows how long they'll be in stock or for sale since they are not making them anymore. Would hate to not be able to take advantage of getting higher quality clubs for cheaper.

Do you think it is worth considering these options:

A) the Vapor Pro Combos ($400 for 4-PW) and learning/growing into them

B) Vapor Fly Pros ($400 for 4-AW)

C) Vapor Fly ($300 for 4-AW)

D) Follow traditional wisdom-- continue using old set and get fitted later

I'm going to sign up for lessons regardless but I was just curious which of these options you would recommend for me as a beginner. Thanks!

Pro Combos or Fly Pro's..........which ever heads you prefer. Fly Pro's are stronger lofts through the set. Both have a solid feel on center of face shots and the forgiveness seems about the same between the two.

My only concern with the Pro Combos is if it would be detrimental to my development as they are more of a "player's iron" rather than "game improvement" but with my limited knowledge I don't know if that is something I should really be worried about. Would it really be more difficult to learn on those rather than something more "forgiving"? Thanks again for the input.

I played VPC's in 2015 as an 8 hdcp, never once felt like I had too much club for my abilities.

My input is the Pro Combos....

It's gonna take years to grow out of them... if you ever do.

No reason you can't learn to hit these.

As far as lessons go, if you get a good instructor, they will encourage you to get fit prior to a lot of practice. Mine made me get fitted before he would allow me to continue. Especially as far as club length is concerned.

I too, picked up some new Nike clubs via the employee store, but then spent another couple hundred on a good fitting and new grips.

Good luck, and there really is no bad decision to be made as all of the clubs are really nice. I dumped my GI clubs for the VPC's and I couldn't be happier.

Also picked up the wedges, driver and Origin putters.

Nothing like taking advantage of a good deal.

someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but forgiveness is more about not losing distance when it's not hit on the button. the most forgiving clubs out there aren't going to magically make the ball go straight. that being said, I don't think it'll be any easier or harder to learn with less forgiving clubs. a good swing is still a good swing...a bad swing is still going to be a bad swing.

buddy of mine started golfing about 4 years ago with a hand me down set (my original box 14 piece set - 1w/3w/5w 3-pw putter and bag) that cost me $99. about a month later, he was hooked and bought a set of mizuno blades. he still plays them to this day.

PC's are forged Fly Pros are cast. both feel great imo. both fairly forgiving. if you're thinking that the PC's are too much club for you, I'd get the Fly Pros. You're only going to be as good as your swing, and your attitude toward the clubs. If you have no confidence, then you're going to hit terrible. my 2cents.

Wondering if someone can answer this, wondering the differences between all 3 sets of Irons.. I have recently bought a set of XR OS Irons, and wondering if I should spend the money (while the Nike Irons are dirt cheap $300 or $400) now for my 2nd set when I grow out of the SGI Irons...

So what exactly are the differences between the Vapor Fly, Fly Pro, Pro Combo? Does it range from GI to PC Irons in that order?

Thanks

Edit: Also to say, I was thinking that after I grow out of the XR OS I would move to something like the XR Steelhead Irons, would I be much better suited saving a lot of money by just buying a set of Nike Irons now for $400 instead?

Thanks again

Yep, that's the order. So you'd want Fly Pros or Pro Combos. Probably Pro Combos since I don't think even the Fly Pros will be drastically different than the xr os.

I would say there is not a ton of forgiveness difference between the Fly Pro and the Pro Combos. I would probably put them in that same order though, because the Fly Pros have slightly stronger lofts. The VPCs feel slightly better because they're forged, and they are shaped a bit more like a player's club, but you can't go wrong either way.

Thanks for the info, so is there a large difference then between the Vapor Fly and the Fly Pro? Are they both GI Irons or are the Vapor Fly more SGI? I have not seen them in person, so just wondering the difference there.

Thanks agin

The lofts on the Fly's are just jacked up a little more, get the ball in the air better for beginners. That is really the only difference between the Fly and the Fly Pros that I can really tell, I'd call them both GI irons. The Pro Combo and Pros are both forged so definitely a players iron.

The Flys have a little more offset and the club heads are a little bigger than the Fly Pros. I would call the Flys GI irons but the Fly Pros and the VPCs are somewhere between GI and players irons.
