hole in one: i figure i do it in the first hour, maybe less, provided i am swinging well that day and the green and hole location aren't stupid. strategy would be to hit one more club right from the jump and hit it to land before the pin, run up and in. before i even started, i'd have charted out the hole location (practice putting to read the break) so i'd have an ideal range of where to land it.

 

also, i'd take a break after every 10 or so shots, walk up and see how close i was getting to that landing spot and if my read was correct, maybe hit a few putts again. the same guy clearing balls would be charting my landing so i'd have very detailed info on land point/finish point and how close i got.

 

maybe it's stupid to compare, but i've hit the stick at the island green (150 yards) at OGP so many times during just a regular range bucket (68 balls) and i wasn't just hitting 8is the whole time.

 

follow up: if you move the hole closer, the odds get better exponentially. so if you take city's 20/1 (i'd probably make that bet btw) at 140 yards, it's more like 10/1 at 125 yards. at 100 yards, 2/1. 75 yards: even, maybe less.

 

hell, goose and i both had holes in 1 at the NGB7s last fall, and that was on 1 shot.

GTW: I'm terribly unlucky. I'm just decent with my PW and I've played a lot of Par 3s at that distance. But, I think I've only stuck a few that have ever been close enough for me to think I have a decent chance. After 4 hours or so I think I'd start to get exhausted and it would go downhill.

Had the second lesson yesterday. I feel like I have the setup down, and I'm getting weight back better. She showed me a video of the transition and there was a definitive over-the-top move, so we worked on hitting "path-only" draws with a 7 iron, 50% swings. Struggled hard to get anywhere close for most of the lesson. Just thinking about too many things. Started to feel it more towards the end, and then took 100+ golf balls and went to work by myself.

 

Set up the skypro and did a groove session with the target being the return angle at half down at -5 degrees (5 degrees inside) just to really exaggerate it. Got some good feedback using it, and after 30 balls or so stopped thinking so much and just concentrated on keeping the head down. That's when things really started clicking. Good 7i punch-draws using just path, no hands. 50%.

 

CCMVP showed up and we started alternating before his lesson (shoots 78 on the weekend, schedules an hour lesson for Tuesday) and I lost the feeling briefly. It was a good lesson, actually. We talk often about getting into a groove on the range. Had to get back in and concentrate to start doing it correctly again.

 

Hit a few at 80-85% after a while and was very happy. Not every one was perfect, but the ones that were hit well really felt and looked good. Finished off with another 20 punches before leaving. Progress, folks. Progress.

The groove mode is sweet. Seems accurate to me. Interface is good and you have a ton of info to look at. Setup is fairly painless.

 

I'm more of a feel guy when I'm practicing, but it's really nice to have numbers and a visual of the swing to reference if you want it. Also works for putting, which I think it's as helpful as anything.

How long have you had it? I've thought about picking one up but I hear people eventually have it die on them after a few months.

i'm at hampshire greens playing really well. Get to #11 and hit my first one into the woods. Retee. Hit it into the hole. Shoot 76. Still haven't had a hole in one :(

I've holed out from the fairway a bunch of times, and come really close to getting another, but no dice. Kenty must have about 15 by now. Closest I've seen in recent history was PQ at the 11th hole at Hobbits this year. He hit a beauty that I'm 99% sure lipped out as it spun back by the hole.

You have a 140 par 3. "Normal" difficulty. Maybe not a flat plane, but it's not a pin tucked behind an 8 foot mound, either.

 

You have an unlimited supply of balls, and 8 hours.

 

What are the chances you get a hole in one? What's your strategy?

 

Someone is going to clean balls off the green for you and fix your ball marks.

Interested to hear who else has a hole in one. CCMVPDad has two. He moves between a 13-18 HC. One was on Oakmont number 13. The other was at Oak Creek in Sedona - also hole 13 - which is unbelievably picturesque. He is not a very good iron player either and has only been playing for about 12 years. The one at Cross Creek #5 with a 3W from 120 off a tree, over the cart path, up and in.

 

The other one is on this hole. About a 110 yard par 3 with a TREE in the middle of it. I hit a wedge over it. She has to play a runner to go under it. It's a downhill hole and you can't see the green. She went down and started looking around for her ball and it was in the hole.

I've only got one as well. It was about ten years ago on the course that I grew up playing in Southwest PA. It's a short course and has 3 par 3's on the front 9. I hit a gap wedge from about 115 that landed 5 feet in front of the cup and rolled in. Still waiting for the next one (although I have been close a couple of times over the last couple of years).

Have 2, both actually happened within a one-year time span just different seasons. Haven't sniffed one since.

Never had one. I could drop a bucket hat over the hole and cover 25 that have been close, but none went in.

Hit the flag on one that would have gotten me a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee. When you see it going towards the stick, and the "spotter" gets out of her chair to run to the green, you know it's close.

I've had a few stop within a couple feet, but I rang one off the flag stick on the fly last year at that clubcorp course on Long Island with ccmvp and city. The shot wasn't necessarily that close though.

 

baddad has had two. I was there for the first one. It was a shotgun start and I met him at the course since he was running late. We started on #5 which was the par 3. He tees it up first of the group, no warm up, and knocks it in.
