So, you can lift your ball, and smooth things out, remove impediments, but can't move it? Like if it's behind a bush, or long grass, you can't get relief?

I guess I don't totally hate that. Wonder if that was always the policy, or if they got too many complaints about sticks and stones. It is a "resort course" after all.

Some of those lines off the tee (cliff faces, blind shots over mounds, etc) you saw at Troon last weekend. Classic elements.

Hold the presses. Mr. No Rakes is ok with a local rule stating the exact opposite?

So the main guy in The Night Of is also going to be in Rogue One? Hmm.

So's Ben Mendelsohn, who is great in Bloodline.

Love me some Bloodline.

It's a different animal.

The thing is, at TR, there's "waste areas" everywhere, and carts drive through them, IIRC.

There's no chance of the golf course tending to them, and they're rocky and have sticks, and ruts and washouts. I bet the rule was much more about "we have people here taking penalties because they don't want to ding their clubs up and want to play rules of golf."

If you could actually make a meaningful distinction between waste areas and greenside bunkers, I wouldn't like a rule like that extended to greenside bunkers.

Always someone trying to lowball, even when the prices are, at least I think, great.

why do some of you guys gets worked up about lowball offers?

Say "no" or make a counter offer.

End of story.

My wife gets it in her business, and that's her livelihood.

Tobacco Road is incredibly fun. It's cool to see pictures of the course in the summer. Looks so much greener than the two times I've played in the winter. Mike Strantz designed the course to look intimidating from just about every tee but actually play relatively easy. Big fairway landing areas just beyond crazy views.

City, I think the rule is due to the cart ruts and footprints throughout since a lot of the fairway "bunkers" are cart paths. Also, they'd have 10,000 rakes if you were required to rake after every sand shot.

Not worked up, but its annoying as hell. I understand everyone wants a good deal, but I shouldn't have to deal with an idiot offering 25 dollars for a shaft or "because it looks like you're looking for a quick sale will you take 150 for everything?"

But, my typical answer is just no. Or, I ignore the f***er.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

I wouldn't say they're designed to be a "hazard" like a normal bunker. IIRC correctly, you can drive through them, and they almost become like cart paths. More like a course (like Worthington) having a loose impediment rule in bunkers.

It's just exhausting. Most of the people on here know the price of the equipment for sale and try to get it for less than what even Golfsmith would pay.

I fully expect my used stuff to depreciate but it's expensive, and I'm not running a charity. Most lowballers get ignored but I recoup more losses on eBay with less hassle.

One of the things that is so cool about TR is -- I guess I'd call it -- the "Graphic Design" of the course. It has a consistent look and feel from the logo, to the tee-markers, to the signage, to the landscaping. You can see it in the stairs in this image. They look all catawumpus, but it's definitely intentional.

Golf Talk Wednesday :

You have a 140 par 3. "Normal" difficulty. Maybe not a flat plane, but it's not a pin tucked behind an 8 foot mound, either.

You have an unlimited supply of balls, and 8 hours.

What are the chances you get a hole in one? What's your strategy?

Someone is going to clean balls off the green for you and fix your ball marks.

I can't stop looking at your Tobacco Road pics, Puppet. I love the harsh visuals. Really gets me amped up to see it in person.

I keep looking at them too. Really enjoyed the course. Glad we played it twice.

One more thing about TR. Local rule is all waste areas are not bunkers, AND you may lift your ball to improve your lie. No rakes or raking. I think I like the concept actually. I only had to move a large stone once, all other times my lie was pretty good in the waste area. Very playable sand too.

I like the rule the more I think about it, but mainly from a maintenance and efficiency standpoint. No rakes/raking, more focus on green areas. Golfers can hit and move on, let the next guy figure it out.

Approaching 0%. Your best hope is within the first half hour to an hour when you're making your best swings.

Even assuming you took adequate breaks, you would still be exhausted after...two hours? Probably have to switch clubs at some point and you would just be hoping for dumb luck at that point.

For the first 45 minutes, chances are slightly better than if hitting just one shot. Let's say .01% 1 out of 10,000

After 45 minutes, I'm getting tired. Chances go way down.

Today in random items that might only interest me:

I've been listening to William Finnegan's memoir about surfing (it's really f*****g good) and he's talking about dropping acid and surfing Honolua Bay. That's right where the Plantation Course now sits. So I pull up the google maps view of the coast because I'm curious about what he's describing. And I discover, to my great amusement, that someone at google strapped the streetview camera system to a golf cart at the Plantation Course. So you can now view the Plantation Course using Google street view.

I want every world class course to do this. It's great.

GTW: I just googled it and took the first thing. Hole in one odds are 12,500 to 1 for an "average" golfer and 2,500 to 1 for a pro. Call it 10,000 to 1 for me just to make a round number. Over 8 hours I figure I could hit about 1,000 balls max, though probably closer to 500. So maybe a 5-10% chance of a hole in one over the day? Strategy would be like FAbb, hit more club and swing easy to conserve energy. I might hit a bunch of half 6 irons or something.

reilly is an Word not allowedclown.

hole in one: i figure i do it in the first hour, maybe less, provided i am swinging well that day and the green and hole location aren't stupid. strategy would be to hit one more club right from the jump and hit it to land before the pin, run up and in. before i even started, i'd have charted out the hole location (practice putting to read the break) so i'd have an ideal range of where to land it.

also, i'd take a break after every 10 or so shots, walk up and see how close i was getting to that landing spot and if my read was correct, maybe hit a few putts again. the same guy clearing balls would be charting my landing so i'd have very detailed info on land point/finish point and how close i got.

maybe it's stupid to compare, but i've hit the stick at the island green (150 yards) at OGP so many times during just a regular range bucket (68 balls) and i wasn't just hitting 8is the whole time.

1000 balls might be a lot -- i was thinking 1 per minute -- but just mathematically, I gave myself like a 1 in 7500 shot, and figured 480 balls. That puts me in the 6% chance of "at least one".

Golf-wise, though, I think it's a little higher. . .if I just swing the same club over and over at the range, I can really find the slot after a few swings -- I can start hitting fades and draws, take a little off, add a little, and I can find a good line to aim on. This is MUCH different than being able to do it on the course. Anyway, I think I've got better chances than 1 in 7500 for a couple hundred balls anyway. Pros also are 1 in 2500 and every par 3 they play is between 180 and 230 pretty much. I don't think I'm way off from 1 in 2500 from 140 yards and I'm doing it over and over.

Anyway, now I'm getting tired.. .I take a half hour off. Nap. Get a sandwich.

Maybe I'm losing a little distance and losing the ball right (as I do when I get tired). So, I start hitting the 7 iron and adjust for the slice I'm getting. It's not like I've lost it completely.

You still gotta make the ball go in the hole, though. I bet you roll over edges or leave 'em just short or hit the stick a LOT over the course of the day.

I'd definitely put up $100 bucks if someone gave me 20-1 on it.
