I know it is sunny as can be right now on this side of the bay, but also know there's a line coming our way. Which is most likely going to fudge up our men's league tonight. Just puts me in a cantankerous mood. That and I'm learning once again to really despise the Isles. A month ago, they would have been 7th-10th on the crap list. They are slowly move up it. The team AND the fans. Oh well. Nice win last night for the guys in RED!

I think there are certainly things that work in their favor.

- quality caddies
- a wealth of preparation on how to play the course
- spectators to find balls that might otherwise be lost
- smooth greens
- fairways that provide plenty of roll out

Pretty much all of them are counteracted, and then some though.

- courses with difficult layouts
- firm greens, that don't hold approaches and greenside shots
- crazy fast greens
- long, thick rough
- courses playing 7200+ yards
- thousands of spectators on the course creating distractions at all times

Btw, I came across this last night flipping through my son's Calvin and Hobbes collection. Seems to apply broadly around this site, and in real life too.

Just got back from my wife's retirement ceremony...20 years in the military. She has been in DC longer than NY where she was born.
95% of the reason why I think I'd shoot worse on a pro-course set-up: distance and rough.

People act like they're playing on magical courses with tiny crowned greens that run off into OB if your putt goes one foot past the hole.

I've played on greens where there's not a chance the pros would accept some of those pins. When pro greens occasionally get to a point where a ball rolls to the hole and rolls back, they water them. We've all seen a front pin on 2 at Worthington when they're rolling fast. Front middle/right on hole 3. I've seen chips come BACK off the front of the green on 16 at Clifton, for pete's sake.

If you have two greens at the limit of stimp + slope, I think most anyone would putt better on a green where the stimp is high and the slope is small as opposed to the opposite, and pros are much more often in that first state. I think that Richie Hunt has written that amateurs face tougher putts than pros. But don't quote me on that.

Distance control would take a little getting used to, but I don't think it would be a long term issue and I think the 5/6 footers would be generally easier.

^^^^
That's all talking generally. Augusta, which the goofball OP was talking about, might be a whole different story when they're at Masters speeds.

So, I got my wife to take the east potomac get golf ready 6 classes for $99. After multiple class reschedulings, customer service issues on all fronts, and just an overall subpar experience she is pretty dejected about EPP.

I've never taken a lesson, much less there and my only interaction is to give them money to play golf. Is that standard operating procedure for the classes or did she just catch a bad experience? Are there better options? She wants to have a few lessons but doesn't want to spend $100/hr as a beginner that isn't sure if she'll stick it out.
FWIW they did give her multiple buckets of balls and a free round/cart coupon for completely forgetting an entire class one day so the cost probably almost washed and I have to give some props for fixing one of the many issues.
I'M SHOCKKKKED that you received poor service from the crack staff at Haines Point...and I say that as someone who played hundreds of rounds there when I first moved to DC. But dont give up on those classes. Depending on where you are in NoVa, check out Hilltop Driving Range in Alexandria. My wife, my sister in law and a number of beginners I know have had amazing luck there. Kathleen Robinson, who is their head pro, just has a fantastic way of teaching beginners and getting them excited about golf. I cant say enough good things about her - an hour lesson with her would definitely be worth the time/money.

Absolutely.

I played Torrey Pines South and Pinehurst #2 this spring. Torrey Pines defense is length and long rough. #2's defense is around the greens. I found Torrey Pines immensely harder because of that. #2 was more fun for the same reason. You could spray it a bit and generally at least have some hope of getting to the green in regulation. #2 was tough for me around the green because the lies were so tight, which I just have no experience with.

Torrey plays 7000 yards from the blues, 7600 from the tips. And when I didn't find the fairway, it's was about a 50/50 shot that the lie required hitting wedge to get it back out. It took me the entire round to comprehend that I really had no chance of hitting anything over about 120 yards from the rough. The only thing I've seen here that is that hard or harder was the Capitol Cup last year where Clustered Spires had the Open Qualifier and then it rained and they couldn't cut the rough. And the starter said the Torrey rough was shorter than for the Farmers, which I'm sure is even shorter than the US Open conditions. I think most people just have no experience with rough like that, and discount just how tough it is. I certainly did.

Pro setups are undoubtedly harder. But I'd love to have a season with punched greens, and fairways that roll!

Completely agree. Its one thing to carry a drive 240-250 and have it plug most of the year - I'd kill to have fairways that give you 40-50 yards of run.
