I’d rather see them snap it over their knee and leave it on the ground. Less danger, less of a spectacle, maybe I can sneak out there and grab the head.

While I don’t care much what other people think of me, I also follow the motto of “don’t look like an idiot”. Throwing clubs fits into “looking like an idiot”. Sorry if that offends. It’s a bad look.

 

From a psychological perspective, there’s much healthier ways to deal with emotion than physical outbursts. My 5 year old son at the time once went golfing with me, when he watched me push a second drive of the day out of bounds. He calmly said to me “dad, that was a terrible shot”. I laughed, accepted what he said as truth, and said “yes, yes it was”. Then we moved on and had a great time.

 

Oddly enough, my dad was a club thrower and never got over it. There are few things more awkward then playing golf with a grown man throwing golf clubs.

More seriously, of course bad conduct. Others should not suffer from a player's shortcomings. To laugh it off is better.

 

On this subject, Stenson has got the most unfitting of nicknames.

I have always tried my best to, as you said, "not look like an idiot" and agree that throwing clubs makes you look that way. I can, also, admit that I had a throw or two in my golfing life. The last time I did it was during an important at the time match, where I was upset enough at the fact that I had not changed out my wedge for the new one sitting in my office yet and tossed the old one into a pond to force myself to do so. Problem with that is that I still had 6 holes to play and needed that wedge several times more through the rest of that round. Learned my lesson, moved on.

 

I have several guys who I have or used to play with who are club throwers. It's generally one of the most uncomfortable times that I have on the golf course when they are doing that. For that reason, and the story above, I do all that I can to avoid being "that guy" when playing and find better ways to release the way I am feeling about the fact that I suck.

I've thrown several if I add them all up over the last 20 years. I'm not particularly proud of it and it isn't a planned thing. It goes swing, anger, throw. So no premeditation. I don't like that I occasionally throw a club but if I really think about all the questionable things I've done in my life, throwing a golf club doesn't even scratch the top ten.

If I got clubs for free, I might be more tempted.

Don't really care either way, as long as they aren't tossing them where anyone can get hurt.
