Ridiculous pricing

Recommended Posts

People often mistakenly think prices are set by cost plus markup. In a market economy, they are not set that way. Or at least should not be. It is, of course, the intersection of supply and demand that sets prices. So there is no point in complaining about prices we think are above "what they ought to be." If there is no demand at that pro"ice, it will come down. If there is a demand at that price, that is what the price should be.

Here is what I do. I buy all of my golf clothes from eBay. They are all new with tags. I love the Nike TW shirts. They are top notch but no way am I paying $110 + tax for a shirt. I recently got a black TW short he wore at the Masters for about $55 shipped. A new Puma that retails for $65 for around $35.

Golf clothes are SO marked up and I noticed that in about 2 months, most make it to the clearance rack. There are a few caveats as Titleist and Fottjoy stuff usually is pretty static. That being said, eBay and make sure you get new with tags.

Clothes = eBay
Clubs = eBay
Balls = lostgolfballs.com - look like new when they come in with a few markings.

Just a rant. Golf clothing has gotten ridiculously expensive within the last few years. 75-90 for a short sleeve shirt by Nike and 75-80 under armor? Pair of foot joys looked nice until I saw they were $180. I feel like a cheapskate but these prices are getting insane. Thoughts?

I don't bother. I buy non golf, i.e., clothing that is not Golf branded, clothing. I never really wanted to be a walking billboard and choose the clothes that have very subtle brands.

If OP is buying full retail golf shirts, well, I don't even know what to give that other than a C'MON MAN!

I have drawers full of RLX, Polo Golf, Peter Millar, Fairway and Greene, and Adidas shirts, none of which cost more than $28. Under Armour? No thanks, those are about as stylish as a trash bag (sorry, Jordan!)

I believe you pay for the name in some cases and not the tech.....case in point...the best polos I own are Slazenger Tech, they are 94 poly, 6 spandex, the large fits like a slightly smaller large, tailored perfectly for me, feel great, and perform well in warm conditions. They were always on sale bogo and were on clearance last winter. Best bang for your buck period!

Just buy stuff when it goes on sale... It always does. And if there is a particular item that you want so badly that you're scared it won't be in stock when a sale comes around... pony up and pay for it?

That's the way I look at it. I occassionally browse what's out, and then when there is a big sale, I just buy a bunch of stuff and return whatever I don't want.

There are allot of ways to save on golf clothing, look for discount stores, go to outlets when sales are on. I find discount sales sites like namebrandgolf who carriers great brands at discount prices. I also go to golf clubs when on vacation at end of summer who are pushing to move merchandise with bogo sales.

Yes you are right but you never have to pay retail. You are posting this on the WRX so why would you ever buy from a store ever when you have a lot of quality stuff coming through the bst. Also Ebay has a bunch of stuff if you know your sizing. You are correct in that the price of stuff has gone up but who do you think is going to pay RORY or JORDAN to wear their clothes. YOU ARE SILLY GOOSE. Thats what Phil Knight says....

Fit, finish, and how it feels to the touch and when trying it on is how I judge; not someones snooty opinion or marketing campaigns!

Some of the polo prints are gawdy, but the jacket vests, shortsleeve jackets, pullovers; and the Plain Polo ( which is 88poly/12spandex) all look good IMO.

Yeah, the slazenger stuff at Dick's is surprisingly good. To be honest, if it didn't have that cat on there I would think it was a much better brand.

Slazenger was a top brand for years. There's no reason it isn't quality now.
