The oddest club you've ever owned...

I was thinking about all the club purchases I've made and realized there have been some incredible mistakes! :cheesy:

The one club I wish I never wasted my time on was a 17* controller driving iron that I thought I could replace my driver with

So what mistakes have you made?

In 1999 I bought a 9.5* PT w/regular shaft at a time when I was easily playing a stiff...it was only $45 off ebay. I ended up giving it to my stepdad.

 

Other than that, I haven't made too many club purchases. I currently have a 18* Tour Spoon from the '91-'93 era that has way too much bulge and roll and I want to pawn off for $10 (+ship of course). I use it as a utility club but I want something with a flatter face.

I owned Basakwerd putter that came out about 20 years ago and I still own it. It actually putts nice but I have no guts to use it on the course.

I remember that club and have actually seen it a few times in the 2nd hand store I go to. I found these pics of it on Ebay...it always amazes me that Table Rock Golf is always selling them. Maybe Jim Butler know's something we don't.

 

 

My oddest club had to be the Original Alien Wedge. This was back when infomercials were all over regular TV too and I remember them hitting this wedge from every type of lie and getting the ball up and on the green. I couldn't resist. I don't know what I ever did with it, but obviously from and Ebay check, I wasn't the only one who bought one. Here's some pics I found. It doesn't quite show the weird sole it had though.

 

 

As for the Basakwerd, I just handed one to PM Hacker/Russ the other day when we were at the 2nd hand store. Crazy looking thing! :cheesy:

Im kind of embarrased that I bought a pod but you know its the way of the club ho...this is how we do........

I think the worst club I ever had was a Ray Cook wedge with a shank proof hosel. The hosel was attached at the TOP of the club and curved back to a normal hitting position. I have never seen another one like it.

 

Sold it many years ago to buy an EV Snake Eyes wedge when they were the hot item. I still own the original Snakes. They are great grinds.

My Grandpa got me an Alien Wedge a few years ago. Never made it to the bag suprisingly.

I didn't have to thinkg very lang and hard to come up with the worst club I've ever bought. It was the Yamaha Top Dog Driver. It has a super long very flexible shaft. It was impossible to control. Our club pro who can't hit a slice to save his life was slicing this club all over the course. I sitll have it and everyone in awhil i take it out just to remind my of how stupid i was one cold winter day.

I still have these two odd clubs.

 

CastleHawk Putter, the official putter of the World Am a few years ago, they were selling them on ebay and so i bought one, supposed to create the perfect roll on a golf ball.

 

Second is the Ping Chipo, this was a legal chipper, because it has the same loft as a 7iron, and was only onesided. When I first started I owuld use this thing up to 150 yards, it was horrible.

Has anyone ever seen one of the OCTAGON putters with the octagon profiled steel shafts and they are really heavy..wierd but nice putters.

Years ago I had a wedge with a REALLY high bounce sole I bought for $5 called "SOD BUSTER by STAG".

 

It was the heaviest club I've ever swing. Must've been E-something.

I got a Wedge called the "Sand Daddy" as a gift. The sole of the club was huge, don't remember who made it, but it was returned to the sports authority.

I bought the Jack Hammer driver...remember all the holes in the face that let air thru and out the back end of the driver. "Cuts wind resistance thru the swing thus increasing swingspeed." I guess you could say I broke wind with that one...HA!!! I Kill myself with my comedy!!! :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: (cool)

My girlfriends dad has a Slippery Frog. It's a 3 wood head attached to a putter shaft for chipping around the green.

It wasn't really a mistake, since I played quite well with it for a time, and since it didn't cost anything, but I once got to a point of such frustration with my putting that I borrowed a putter from my dad - who is left handed -and used that. I didn't putt left handed; it was one of those double sided putters with a centre-ish shaft.

 

Think "crazy golf" and you'll be there. A square, blocky-shaped Bullseye type putter, with a head of some undtermined material, which I personally decided was cast lead. The shaft was aluminium, in a sort of burnished grey colour, and it was made by a company called Bronty.

 

I putted well with it for a few weeks, at that time being a club/county player, and so I ran the gauntlet of some pretty serious ribbing from opponents and teammates alike.

 

I wish I had a picture of it. Even now, 15 years later, you'd laugh...

Hey I've got of these in the bag at the moment. My other wedge is in getting fixed. I actually quite like it. It'll prob stay in the bag

i got a greg norman chipper sitting out the bag that when i first got i throught it was the greatest club ever.

it had around 30* of loft so i would pull it out from 130 and try belt it but cause it was only 34 inches i bladed most of them.
