Just found this, cheaper and compact solution for a shaft cutter. Thoughts?

looks like it will only cut 1/2" depth (not the required .600" butt diameter). For an apartment,
you may want to consider dust free shaft cutting

That practically consumes his $250 budget.

Haha I live in a small apartment and do everything on the kitchen counter. No vice, no shaft puller. Just a butane torch, an oven mitt, a tape measure and a digital scale. Oh and a pipe cutter, wire brush, sandpaper w/ various grits, and scraping tools (mini screwdriver) for removing epoxy from hosels, epoxy, tape, and mineral spirits. I keep in all in a box under the sink.

Saving for a house now, can't wait to have a full blown shop, but I am able to get by with limited space.
+1 except I also purchased a Robert's Puller and some rebar for grips. I'm thinking about MAYBE putting together a small workbench in the garage just for a clamping system but literally have not needed much more than the post above stated.

Also, I don't know how much you care about swing weight, but I use the economy swing weight scale from Golfsmith. I have used way more than I ever thought. They usually have coupon codes so you can get it on sale.
Would absolutely like to have a swing weight scale, don't think that is something I can make myself haha. Thanks for the tip, any problems with that scale or major difference between the expensive ones?
Years ago I built a home made swing weight scale. The base was a quart milk carton with an old DVD set into it. The DVD had a V slot cut into it for balancing the shaft. Used that set up for a couple years, then bought the economy scale from Golfworks. Much more convenient to use a proper SW scale. Just buy one.

UPDATE: Decided that making my own bench out of 2x4's would be cheaper and much more sturdy than anything with saw horses and plywood. Set out for a budget of $250
2X4 = 24.48
Ply = 18.75
8.97 = Screws
Vice = 19.97

Total= $72.17

I've bought many of the other supplies and tools I'll need but many are still wrapped under the tree so haven't totaled them up yet...

Throw some casters on it and you can roll it in and out of the house.
On the carpet?! HotRod you must be crazy, the fiancé would not be happy about that haha. The bigger issue is that it won't fit I had to build it in that direction because its too big to turn, discovered this the hard way and had to take off two of the legs to turn it mid build...

That's hilarious. We've all been there at one time or another.

I was going to say that it might be better facing the window if it's not too deep. Right now everything has to fit between the walls. Every once in a while it's nice to have room for a shaft protrude from the bench.

No disrespect, but bad decision on this one. A 6" bench grinder from Harbor Freight with cut off disc is only $40. WAY easier and more accurate way to cut shafts.
Down the road I agreed this would be a great tool, have a lot of experience on bench grinders like this from my metal working days and it would be very helpful, but at the moment I went with the cheaper solution. Also the grinder could be a bit loud for the apartment neighbors maybe when I get a garage.

Didn't plan it but realized today the shelf will make a great space to dry clubs or store an extra set. Anything I should take note of when laying them down to let they epoxy cure? Are curing clamps really necessary?
The club should be upright when curing epoxy.

Regarding the tubing cutter, I have one and have used it plenty but the blade tends to walk off the intended cut line so you get club length discrepancies. Can't stand the things to be honest.

And the cheap tubing cutter wheel you got for steel will wear out about 5-8 shafts in. Plumbing grade I bet... Those are made for soft metals(copper, brass), not steel and definitely not plated steel. I've got one that is designed for cutting stainless tubing. It's made for Swagelock for their stainless tubing. I got it when I took their little seminar/class on tube bending/cutting. They gave it to me with a deburr tool and a set of tubing benders for small tubing (I work in a power plant and run tubing). The cutting wheel is carpenter's steel so it doesn't wilt when cutting stainless. That plumbing tool is a waste of money because you're gonna be replacing blades every set. If you don't, you'll be ruining the butts of shafts the wrong way. I'd have went with the mini chop saw with fiber blades personally. Will last forever and has a lifetime warranty. What's $20 in the grand scheme of things?
Good info I did not know those would wear out so fast on steel, The one I used at my dad's house must have been more heavy duty as we cut through steel tubing this is a run of the mill plumbing cutter so you're probably right. Looking around is this what you're talking about?

Would those blades work on a grinder like this? That way I could dual hat and use it as a buffer/grinder as well?

If you buy the spacer for the grinder it could be mounted but I wouldn't. Not sure what speed that grinder is rated at is why I say that. The chop saw is the one I refer to. Works well, I've got one myself (I have a normal size chop saw as well that I could use and I cut lumber with but it's less space consuming using the small one).

***UPDATE***

Wanted to post an update as I have finally got my workshop up and running after Christmas.

post-389058-0-98965600-1451160971.jpg

post-389058-0-47364500-1451160976.jpg

Was I able to meet the $250 budget? Well that depends on what expenses count in the budget...

Did I build a bench with a basic grip station and vice grip? Check

Shaft Puller and Swing weight scale? Thanks to Hot Rod 71 and brock9007, Yup

Club Ruler? Check

All well under the budget but once you start counting the other expenses... Solvent, Tape, Ferrules, Torch, paint tray with hose, digital scale, tip weights, shims, epoxy, yada, yada, yada, you know the deal I'm a little North of the budget. However looking back on the goal I set in the beginning I consider it a success and a great start to my first crack at club making. Excited to get started!
Pulled the trigger on the chop saw today got a 20% off from Harbor freight. This should be much easier and give cleaner cuts. Tried to use a hack saw and with the flex in the blade its just too hard to get a really straight cut. (At $5 for a saw it was worth a shot tho)
