Very excited for my 8th trip coming up on March 6th but I have a few questions for those that have gone recently for the first time or can jog my memory. Normally I go as a single but this time I'm taking 3 first timers. Our schedule is Pacific then, 36 with Old Mac in the AM and Trails in the PM, then Bandon in the AM with Preserve and Punchbowl in the afternoon followed by Pacific again and then departure. Chose Pacific to play 2x because I thought that Pacific was the most memorable for the majority of people (Trails is my fav. though).

That said, what would I overlook having been there a few times that a first timer might think is cool? I know the Meatloaf or heading in town to hang with the caddies at the Arcade but what could I be missing that they would enjoy?

not sure if the Sheep Ranch is open in March (or if it will be open at all after the fire last fall), but it's a unique experience.

A couple of the green sites are amazing.

(The one time I played there with a friend, neither of us really liked it, because it's unstructured free-form golf. I'm a linear thinker.)

Other than being a great place to cut their teeth if it's their first time at Bandon, Shorty's is a good place to start to get creative. We play cross country, crazy prop bets, etc at Shorty's as it allows...

In my 7 trips I've never seen another person in the whirlpool, WTF.

I'll look out for the Shorty's flag to be up. IS the maze thing cool or worth it? Anything I'm missing?

The one thing that i missed was I always try to play a round on Bandon where I come in around sunset, the 18th at Bandon with the sun setting behind you is as good as it gets, IMO.

Sunset on any of the four 18th holes is always a treat. The labyrinth is worth a visit, at least once. And Shorty's is one of the best things about the whole resort.

I'm just a few days over two weeks out. Can't wait! I'll post some dispatches in the evenings. Anybody there Feb 15-18 feel free to PM.

Anyone else just back? Trip reports!!!!

We've always enjoyed taking our putters out before dinner at McKee's and play some betting games on the putting green in front of The Gallery. We bring our own beer and also buy from Puffin Lounge. It's a fun and easy (after a long day hoofing it) way to get our drink on and get some extra "practice". Not really all that exciting or unique, but something to do. :)

Old Mac and Trails in the same day is probably the hardest 2 courses to walk in one day. I'd consider that for your buddy's especially if they are in winter shape . . . . think of all the huffing and puffing over those steep hills on both courses. If I were to play 36 I would double up Bandon Dunes w/ your choice of course as Bandon is the easiest to walk.

I'm gonig for our 3rd annual trip this Feb 13th and rented the usual BandonHouse south of town and have grown our group to 12 players. A little bit more pricey being non-resort guest but Anita in reservations has been good to us each year in getting some primo tee times.

BAHAHAHAH thanks for that very entertaining link/read. I thought mringwelski was referencing my post to the BandonHouse as the "Bachelors Inn" as some inside caddy knowledge of debauchery at the rental. I'll have to play a joke on my buddies this year and drop them off at the INN and go home.

Things to do:

- Putt your Tee shot on 13 at the preserve

- Find the secret in-ground treasure chest with cigars and booze out on one of the courses (sorry I won't give away more than that)

- Betting Games on Shortys or Punch Bowl

- Bring beer and they well set up a cooler indoor room and make sure it has ice each day - call down for cards and a table and play poker one night

This will be the 3rd time I've done the Old Mac / Trails 36 and haven't had trouble with it.That said I do go to the gym 3-4 days a week and one of the guys going runs 30/40 miles a week. Plus we're taking loopers.

  • 7 months later...

Reading this thread has made me excited. I was contemplating The Prairie Club or Streamsong but I am going to make the trek across country and head to Bandon Dunes in April 2017 by myself. (none of my golf buddies will go). I am going around that easter weekend/following week. If anyone is going or wants to play together if you are going let me know.

Let me know when you get it booked, I'll drive down for a round or 2.

Going as a single is awesome to me. Always had a great time and met some cool people, and some not cool. But that's golf

Got a serious question. I'm coming from the east coast and only have 4-5 days for the trip. Is that enough time to enjoy BD or will it be rushed? Travel day on the first day and last day leaving 2-3 days of golf.

I went out there from Boston

Wed travel day got there about 530

Thur-Sat played 36 aday

Drove to Portland Sat night for a Sunday flight to Boston
