Nikon Coolshot 20 Rangefinder

Recommended Posts

I just got a Nikon laser Tuesday from Golf Galaxy. They were $170 plus an additional $30 off if you spent over $150 thus bringing the price down to $140. I was comparing it to the Bushnell Z6. It locked on to flags very quick and had the same 6 power magnification. Same pin seeker style electronics too. The clincher for me was the small size. It falls right into my pocket for convienence. Plus it's fully waterproof.

I got mine last week too, but GG couldn't get the $30 off coupon to work. It's my first rangefinder, so I don't have much experience to compare with, but so far it's still been a great value. I played last Thursday, and compared readings from two buddies' Bushnells, the Nikon was spot on and $100 more affordable.

Was the coupon expired? If not I'd go back to Golf Galaxy with your receipt and have them credit you the $30. Every now and then I encounter a rookie cashier that can't figure out some of the complexities.

I wanted to give my review on this Rangefinder, as a few WRX'ers have helped me deciding whether to give it a go or not. It's pretty much spot on with the rangefinder's in the higher price range, at less than half of the price. Coming from many, many GPS watches and rangefinders. I really knew what I wanted.

At first glance, if definitely looks like a toy. Well, at least my daughter thought it did. Very compact and lightweight. The white color might not be for everybody, but it didn't bother me. You won't even know your holding it in your hand because it's that small. Fit like a glove for me. With that being said, the 8 second scan feature that happens as you press the button was awesome. Ranging targets wasn't at all shaky for me. Had no problem hitting flags and multiple targets. One button press and I got 3 readings very clearly (front, flag base and flag). Were pretty spot on when comparing with my phone GPS app (hole 19). Makes you feel very comfortable when you are just using the rangefinder. No mistakes when one button press confirms shots. You can easily place it in your pocket and it won't bother you. Pretty good since the other rangefinders I've had, had some weight and size to them.

Overall very happy with this purchase. I really thought that GPS watches were for me until I tried a bunch of them. Really missed scoping targets but it's not for everyone. Hope that this helps someone else who's on the fence about getting one. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Glad to hear you're having good luck with yours. I've had mine about a month now and it works great. It locks on flags virtually instantly. I just shoot at the flag itself and don't even look for reflectors. I also have a Bushnell NEO X watch but haven't used it since I got the Nikon 20. The Bushnell was very convenient but didn't give me all the data I sometimes want. Plus mentally I don't like wearing a watch when I play even though the Bushnell is so light its not an issue (call me crazy).

Update from my review in May for whomever is considering a rangefinder. Just as sharp as the day I got it. Battery life is a lot better than a Bushnell, as I've had the V2 & V3. Somehow the battery on those ran out within a few months. Not with this coolshot, still running on first batteries and no problems with ranging. Hope this helps...

I have one as well. Great rangefinder and does exactly what I need it too. I don't really care if it doesn't vibrate or anything, I just need it to give me yardage. My battery just died on me last week. It lasted since the beginning of last season, so around a 100 rounds.

Yeah my battery last about for months so 100 rounds is good estimate. I have the coolshot 40. I'd be lost without it. Use it anywhere from 150 out, but constantly 120 in. Definitely has improved my wedge game with how full to swing.

How do these work on courses without the reflectors on the flagstick? Most of the courses I play don't seem to have them so is shooting at the flag itself a good option in the absence of the reflectors?

I guess this is a more generalised question about rangefinders, but I have been looking at the Nikon as they are around $100 cheaper in Australia than bushnell or leupold entry level rangefinders.

They work the same, it's just that having a reflector makes it easier and quicker for the rangefinder's laser to register. A lot of the courses I play don't have reflectors so I shoot the flag. There are times where I might need to shoot a couple times but it's only a few more seconds. Also if you use the First Target priority mode, the rangefinder will pick up the flag and not background items.

I've had mine for a full year and think it's a great and simple range finder. Not fancy at all, but gets the job done just fine. No problems getting yardages at all. I also use it at the range to see the actual distances for various targets. Very happy with mine, especially for the price.

One of the major reasons I wanted it is to laser the flags at the range as the distances seem way off. The range I go to has big banners showing distances but the "actual" distances are written on a big board near the shop. Can't complain as the place is cheap, well run(you know apart from the distances) and local so I have no problem going there as if they closed down I'd be looking at a 40 minute drive to a range rather than 5.

Had my cool shot 20 for 2 rounds now, one on a small par 3 course which was a good test on how to laser the flags quickly and the second round was a comp at my local club. The only hard part was remembering to laser when I can, I started to get a routine down towards the end of the round. Grab rangefinder while approaching the ball, setting down the bag, lasering the flag, popping he unit back into the bag then grabbing the club I need. We tend to play ready golf so it didn't take up too much more time but found on holes where play is a bit quicker I tended to not want to slow down play and just eyeballed it.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
