Top Military Golf Courses??

Recommended Posts

Bayonet at Fort Ord in Seaside, CA. It is not an active military base, but it is a great golf course.

It's no longer a military course. Hasn't been for many years and has been rebuilt.

The Presidio in San Francisco. It is open to the public now. The best one I've ever played is Marshallia Ranch which is associated with Vandenburg AFB in Lompoc, CA just North of Santa Barbara. Beautiful course in the woods near the coast. In SoCal, I'm partial to the Navy course in Cypress, which is where Tiger grew up playing. Nice mix of tight tree lined holes and open ones exposed to the sea breeze. 16-17-18 is one of my favorite finishing stretches on any public course in the area.

Sad to say, Marshallia Ranch has been closed for almost a year. Air Force could not afford the increase in water cost. Presidio is no longer military.

I will take hubbard memorial at Hill AFB and it's amazing greens and views and f16s and a10s all day. I like hubbard alot more than I like the academy

Played it many times and it has always been a well maintained and super course to play. Haven't played it in awhile and do miss it. Perfect greens, lush fairways and penal rough.

Just look for Air Force courses.....rumor is the first thing they build on a new base is a golf course... :)

Army jealousy coming out in me!!

Wrong - closing many. AF Courses must be self supporting. most barely make it, if at all. 2017-2018 projections maybe closing 20 courses, and many closed already. Vandenberg, Tyndall, Sheppard, Tuscon, and more to come. Opening to the public is an attempt to create revenue, of course at the expense of civilian courses.

Eglin AFB in FL has two great tracks, Falcon and Eagle.

I've played both but I believe that Eagle is a better layout, just plain fun and their greens are in fantastic shape this year.

Played there for 30-years, never seen the greens in good, much less fantastic shape.

Bumping an old thread so apologies ahead of time, but I played the Eisenhower Blue course at USAFA today and wasn't that impressed. The greens were vicious (fast and unpredictable - not my thing but others may like it), but the course conditioning was mediocre at best. The bunkers overall were in terrible condition. Maybe it's too early in the season to expect good conditioning, but when I see "Best in DoD" plastered everywhere, I expect it to be better.

Probably are the best in DOD, does that tell you anything?

William Blanchard course on Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, fun course and well kept.

also Underwood Golf Course on Ft. Bliss in El Paso, 2 different courses you can play and pretty challenging due to the desert landscape.

Heard Blanchard has either closed or closing?

nope still up and running, new management took over a few months ago. went to play the other day but was raining and they didn't want carts on the course at all not even 90* or path only rule, so went else where incase we got rained on. but still going strong.

Great news - I had heard it would be closed this year, glad I'm wrong.

So am I correct in understanding that "Services" has contracted the operation and maintenance of the course? This is interesting to me.

I'm a Navy brat and that's all we played growing up.

NAS Pensacola - AC Reid. Grew up on that course. I lived there before they had 3 9's. I was a par 72 and a par 60 course. Love that place

Eglin AFB - great course. I remember using a pulley system to help us go up the hill

Camp Pendeldton: Navy-Marine course great course, not always in great condition. Wind is definitely a factor

Admiral Baker/San Diego - North course is longer always a challenge

Seal Beach - Destroyer and Cruiser course. Always a good track nothing crazy but the wind on the last 3 holes makes it tough

Sea n Air (Coronado) - Shot my best score there. great scenery, short course

Klipper - Easily the best scenery Can't remember the hole, but you're literally 10 steps from the beach.

Great list of courses. I've played Pensacola, Pendleton, and Kahneoe (clipper).. Lots of fun.

Heading out to Hill in a couple weeks. Clubs are coming and this will be one of the courses I play, along with Valley View.

  • 1 year later...

Bumping an old thread. I played the University Course at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL last November. I went out by myself and was actually impressed by the shape of the course for the time of year. The greens rolled true (not always something you can say about military courses), and I actually had a "gallery" of prisoners as I passed the federal prison that is located on the base. I managed to stripe my drive on the hole that runs along the fence line, and three prisoners who had been watching me applauded. It's a minimum security facility (i.e., a lot of white collar criminals) so I suspect several of those guys are probably avid golfers. Also, the fox squirrels on the course are enormous and very distinctive looking (a random observation, I know).

I also plaid the course at Aviano AB, Italy, last month. It's a nine-green, 18-tee box course, so you essentially play the course twice. They try to locate the tee boxes far enough apart to make the hole play differently on each pass, but there's only so much they can do with the space they have to work with. Course conditioning wasn't great (it was literally a dandelion patch and the bunkers are hard pan, full of water due to a ton of recent rain), but the greens were incredibly fast. And I'm not just saying they were fast in spite of the rain. There had been rain three of the past five days, including the night before, and they were still easily the fastest I've ever played on a military course. All in all, $18 for 18 holes was a fun way to spend an afternoon (I was TDY and am trying to stay on a budget so if you're asking why I was playing cheap golf instead of seeing more of Italy instead of playing golf, there's your answer. Don't worry, I saw cool stuff on other days and ate well every day).
