Flu From Hell

platgof

Recommended Posts

Everyone around me was getting nailed, and there I was just cruising along, and whamm!!! This baby was called a Stage Two flu by the clinic, really ugly. My sister went to the hospital over it, and now I see why, it is really bad.Missed four days of work, tons of anti biotics and prednisone. Plus Day Quill and Night Quill. Then when the flu symptoms started backing off, body cramps emerged to the point where I had to get my neck and back massage. I really hope to return to work Monday.

Drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest, take meds as prescribed and don't stop unless directed by your doctor and finally don't breath too close to your screen cause this stuff is HIGHLY contagious!

Get well soon!

Afaik, antibiotics don't work against influenza. However Tamiflu (neuraminidase inhibitor) does, if you take it in time.

Hope you feel better.

Is probably similar to mine I had about 2 months ago. The viral infection led to a sinus (bacterial) issue that was so bad the doc had no choice but to put me on the Levaquin. I posted here about my experience post taking it. What was going around here was so contagious and we were running on several patients a day who had it. Went through our entire department.

Unfortunately, since he's been out all week with it, too late for Tamiflu. If memory serves you have 48 to 72 hours post first symptoms to get it started. I think it has some nasty side effects too BTW.

^what he said might want to get a second opinion and rule out menegitis. Neck stiffness is not a symptom of the flu, cramps and spasms could be although I wouldn't be getting a massage if I thought I was contagious. Antibiotics are useless and I'd be careful on the prednisone as that could weaken your immune system further unless you have asthmatic symptoms that really require it.

Rest is pretty much the only thing you could do at this point. Feel better

Welcome to the club. I went to Palm Springs for a tournament and stayed with family. One granddaughter was sick and she loves to hug everyone. On the drive back to Utah I started feeling it, and Wham! It has now been 8 days and I am just starting to feel alive. My wife is a home-health RN and confirms what others have said - this is a nasty case this year. I was like Cardoustie. When I had the energy to take a shower I had to get back in bed and rest from the effort.

Platgof - if your symptoms don't improve you should for sure see a doctor if you haven't done so already. This can turn into pneumonia or worse.

I have been stubborn about flu shots for my whole life as it seemed I got the flu with or without them. After this experience I think I'm back to getting them.

Dead on post here OP.

If you are "rattling" when coughing better go see the doc again. One of our youngest/strongest/healthiest firefighters had this crud - and it went into a case of pneumonia. He lost a bunch of weight and is still not back to 100% and he started getting it just prior to Thanksgiving.

There is good new though.

Once you have had it your immune system won't let you get it again. Some bright side, huh?

Flu strains change every year so while you'd be better equipped to fight same strain again, you probably wouldn't encounter it anyway

Actually odds are greater that he will encounter this season's strain; it's out there and everyone who has the flu likely has it. Since he has already had it his immune system has the antibodies to prevent a relapse. Not exact and not guaranteed because the strain can mutate during the season - which is why the flu vaccine sometimes doesn't work.

I handled a contract for the Florida Department of Health in 2009 during the H1N1 scare and had to travel all over the state lecturing on the subject. Ended up chatting with one of the world's foremost virologist to get some back info. Was both interesting and frightening. One has but to read about the Spanish Flu Pandemic to get an idea of why CDC and World Health Org keep their ears open to any possibility of a strain that is mutational. Since flu comes from birds and the 2009 version was a swine variety it really got their attention; and thus contracts given out to prepare responders for the possibility of an epidemic or even pandemic situation.

I am feeling a lot better now. I still have the rattling going on. My neck is still sore, but I can do a lot of things without it hurting so bad. I am glad golf is on hold for months in this area. This is by far the worst flu I have ever had. I wonder how long it took the Chinese and pharma industry to come up with this one?

Feel better. Did you get a flu shot?...I really think it works. You may still get the flu, but it lasts half as long.

Definitely works!!! Good idea to get the pneumonia shot also if doc recommends it.

The trouble comes in when someone gets the flu shot and then goes around thinking they are wearing "flu kevlar". You can still get really sick depending on the strain, your own immunity status, and whether or not the vaccine "took". I forget the percentage but a small number of people who get the shot get nothing from it.

Well I went golfing for nine holes, could have played 18, but not taking that chance. Nine was enough for now. I had a blast, and walked. needless to say, I broke a big sweat. I played awful but could care less. It was so peaceful, and hardly anyone in my way.

I call that condition "Bed weary" from a John Wayne Western movie from some years back. You lay around so much you get used to doing it. Hard to get back to the normal routine.

A few years back I had a nasty flu I got from work. We were responding to dozens of people who were sick. When I finally got back in the game I was SO weak - it was pathetic. And naturally we had a structure fire. I was completely spent after only one bottle and ended up in the rehab area for the rest of the fire. Hard to imagine that my legs would have ever felt so weak. Like barely able to stand weak.

Flu is literally a killer. Lots of people die from it every year but the media attention only hits if there's a major outbreak affecting a major metro area. Glad you are completely on the mend buddy. Keep drinking lots of fluids and whatever else the doc might tell you that you need to do.

I was able to play yesterday and felt much better, but was dragging a.. after 6 holes. I was shocked how well I started out! Then the last two holes brought home the humble pie. I am getting better and in two weeks should be fully mended. I was very surprised what this flu did to my muscle groups, really flattened them. There's no fool like an old fool, I was trying to out drive the young guys in my group. How smart was that? That M2 driver gets me into a macho mode, just a little more backswing!!

I got this same thing. Started out as horrible neck pain and when that subsided it became the nastiest flu I can remember having. 102 fever at its worst and vomiting every 30 minutes for a day and a half before I went to a local clinic. Regular doses of Advil and Tylenol did nothing. I know it was the flu because I had a nasal swab and it came up positive for influenza a. I was prescribed tamiflu and promehezine for the nausea. Im on my second day with the tamiflu and feel shockingly better. It worked very quickly. I'm 34 and in decent shape and this flu annihilated me. If you get sick, get to a clinic or docs office immediately.

Well, after the December to forget I'm finally somewhat normal. Playing today after hitting a bucket yesterday. Next week I'm getting a flu shot (per my RN wife.) I thought I didn't need one since I already had it, but she correctly pointed out there are several different varieties that I could still catch. Stupid me - I have a couple of doses of Tamiflu in my Rx emergency storage that I forgot about. I wont forget it again.

I had a relapse Sat. and it wasn't terrible, just a reminder. I deserved it as I played Friday and didn't have sufficient head gear, and I had a workout as well where I pushed it a bit. So I spent Sat. at the house recovering. Thankfully I have a 3 day weekend to bury this.

Man, I am feeling so much better now. The symptoms are gone for now, just the weather is getting in the way. That cold front is no joke. I am heading to Louisiana for a week and a chance to warm up, but no golf, work only. The whole family got sick from this flu, and the wife still has it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a nasty case of it as well, got sick NYE day and it took me over 2 weeks to get over it. Doctor said I had a severe sinus and chest infection, he had no idea how I went 2 weeks like I was, started me on anti biotics and steroids immediately! To be honest I'm still not 100% still have a nasty cough at times BUT I'm a lot better than I was a week ago....glad you're feeling better!
