Long Island Driving Range

Hey...I'm a recent transplant to Queens (from Philly) and I'm looking for a good driving range somewhere on Long Island. It needs to have lights, real grass and the closer to Queens the better. I am willing to drive a decent ways if its worth it. Let me know where I should go...but Im getting sick of hitting off mats in Douglaston!

By "Douglaston" I'm assuming you mean the one on Northern Blvd., right? That place is madhouse. The next closest one to Queens is Spring Rock Golf Center in New Hyde Park, but it has mats as well. It has more stalls though as it's a two level facility. If your looking for an all grass range, you need to travel quite a bit. There is a public one on Cherry Creek Golf Course in Riverhead, and one on Spring Lake Golf Course in Middle Island.

Theres also a grass range at Links at Shirley

to get to all of them from queens, i hope you enjoy 3 hrs stuck in traffic.

To be honest, I gave up my grass preference and just went to Randalls island in the city itself. The matts have good "deep" artificial turf, its lighted and the balls are good and fairly (relatively) cheap.

Living in Astoria at the time, it was literally a 5 minute car ride over the Triboro.

I have never gone to the driving range there, but harbor links in port washington isnt too far from queens and its a high end public course so they might have grass range, not sure though. Its a great course either way though.

when you find grass range let me know! live on L.I. closest range was colonial but its now private several ranges out further are grass but its a trip and traffic to get there

Just got back from myrtle beach, they don't know what matts are , the ranges there are like fairways .

Can't beat Randalls Island for just that reason. The deep artificial turf sits steadily in a very think rubber framed pad which is important if you value your equipment.

...traveling east on the L.I.E. from Queens is perfect if you like 'road rage'! :russian_roulette: I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. :clapping:

Harbor links does have a grass range but they are really sneaky with it...if you play a round there you can ask to hit from the turf range and they might let you, other than that they wont let you use it unless u get a lesson or something like that.

I know this is an old post but I've heard (not yet experienced) that randall's island has grass tees now, after a big renovation.

Anyone check it out yet?

How much are green fees in Long Island? I left 15 years ago and was paying 40-50. Now, I still enjoy 40-50 dollar rounds riding in NC - all year long!

It's a shame that here in NY, it seems that basically all the driving ranges that I've been at are artificial turf/mat (Spring Rock, Heartland, Eisenhoward Park, Douglaston, Off the Belt Parkway exit 11N (not sure?))... guess it's too costly to maintain a natural grass driving range.

I've chipped and short "pitch" off the grass area on the Sand Trap bunker section on Spring Rock just to be "told" by management that it's not allowed.

How & where can one work on their freakin' short game? I guess I'm just gonna have to get up early on the weekends & beat up the grass at Forest Park (near the golf course) or any other local park with actual grass.

ok, im letting my little secret out of the bag for you guys...

Hamlet Wind Watch in Happauge has a grass driving range, 2 practice greens u can hit like 40-50 yd chips and pitches into. 2 practice putting greens.

its the best practice facility i've seen on LI.

Best part is they have a practice membership available from April 2 thru November for $500.00. Unlimited balls any days. They give u a cart and shag-bag.

Brooklyn Golf Center (12A off Belt Parkway W) has grass tees to the far left. Even their mats are awesome, a lot better than the one on Northern Blvd. They have a short game area, bunkers, and practice green too.

Cheapest golf on LI would probably be Sunken Meadow GC. $24 to play 18 during the week. A lot better than dropping $40 at Douglaston or Kissena.... I detest those places.
