Are we under-estimating Spieth's "A" game?

I think 99 percent of the pros on tour would love 9 wins and 2 majors at the age of 23 even of it means there follow through looks like a chicken having a seizure.

In the entire history of the PGA Tour only 121 golfers have 9 or more wins. Only 11 active golfers have more than 9 PGA Tour wins.

Great point! Interesting that none of those 121 golfers did so by the same age as Spieth.

The article you posted was from last year. Jordan is now 23 years, 7 months old with 9 wins. Tiger turned 23 years, 7 months old in late July 1999. He won 8 times overall in 1999, but 5 of those wins occurred between August and November. So with 3 wins in the 1999 season before August, he was at 10 PGA Tour wins when he reached Jordan's current age.

Jordan is in rarified air at the moment. But probably impossible to keep pace with what Tiger did from August 1999 through the end of 2003. 29 Tour wins in 4.5 seasons including 7 majors and a PLAYERS. At one point he won all 5 of the biggest golf tournaments in a row (2000 U.S. Open, 2000 Open, 2000 PGA, 2001 PLAYERS, 2001 Masters).

I've said this before and even earlier today in another thread... it's easy to forget how good a guy like Jordan is because he doesn't have the firepower that DJ, Day, or Rory have. Don't get me wrong, he's not a short hitter of the ball, but he's certainly at his best when he's playing his game. I think he got a bit off track when he went on a quest for more distance off the tee. In all fairness to Jordan, when he made that decision he was coming off a spectacular season and that was the one thing he could look to improve. But, by all accounts he doesn't really need that distance to excel.

I was thinking the same thing.

In an interview after a tournament last year, Spieth admitted he was never going to be long as McIlroy and wasn't going to try to be either. I thought that was very smart...if he tried to be as long as McIIroy, the swing changes necessary to do that might actually hurt his game.

He is long enough.

Funny this very subject came up on today's broadcast. Duval (who I like a lot) said you would be splitting hairs between DJ, Day, and McIlroy's "A-game." Then one of the other analysts said Jordan's "A-game" was just different. I guess the name of the game isn't scoring anymore?

What do you think they meant by "different"?

When analysts are asked about this current youth movement they will typically say that DJ, Rory, or Jason Day has the best "A" game. Seems like they may be under-selling Jordan a bit. When this guy is on he pretty much destroys the field:

2014 Australian Open - final round 63 to win by 6 shots

2014 Hero World Challenge - finished -26 to win by 10 shots

2015 Masters - sets or ties 36, 54, and 72 hole scoring records

2015 Tour Championship - wins by 4 shots

2016 Hyundai - finished -30 for an 8 shot victory

2017 Pebble Beach - leading by 6 going into final round, wins by 4

Agreed. Best / most clutch putter since prime Tiger.I dont care what putting stats say under the gun no one is better

Well 3 of them can destroy a course off the tee, the other one doesnt have to. They overpower courses in different ways.

I finally had the chance to watch Jordan play in person over at the AT&T and then the Genesis. I followed him closely for his first round played in the Monterey Peninsula CC. I don't know how anyone could shoot under par in those conditions. The same goes at Riviera.

Next to Dustin he was 20-25 yards shorter of the tee. But from the fairway in, he made DJ look like an amateur, and DJ was playing well.

Jordan is the complete package. That swing isn't pretty, but it is very very effective. The ball comes off the face consistently and his control of distance is very good. Throw in that solid mental game and putting stroke and he is just one tough guy to beat.

He wont be a flash in the pan. We're in the midst of a great one.
