Question about "breaking" 80

Hi,

Recent lurker and first time thread starter (I think). Anyway, just a quick clarification question. I play on a par 70 course. I know most of you guys play on par 72 courses. In order to break 80, do I need to break 80 or do I need to break 78 in your eyes? I mean, breaking 80 for most of you guys is breaking +8. If that rule translates to my course, I need to break 78. I shot a 37 the other day on the front nine, was really pumped about the back, but had to go to work. I've yet to break 80 in a full round, but I feel like I'm getting close.

i guess you can look at it that way... i never really thought about it though...

 

i play several different courses, most of which are par 72, but a few of them are par 71...

Look at it this way......breaking 80 is more mental than physical.... so if you do it on a par 70 or par 72 who cares? If you break it on a course with a slope of 116 vs. a slope of 130 are you going to adjust for handicap? It is what it is...a mile stone in your golfing life.... enjoy it and set a new goal... you never know when it will come.....could be on a hard course...and easy course etc. The only time I dont buy this is when you play a executive course, or extremely short course... sub 6000 yards etc. I shot a really great round once on a 5800 yard course but... I dont know if I can claim it as my best round, but then again I did shoot a 68 on a par 70 for my one of only two career sub 70 rounds, not may people can really say they have done it. The people I was playing with were impressed, and I felt good about it. I dont go around bragging about it but if someone asks me what my best round ever is I say 68 and I say it proudly as a 7 handicapper can.

Yeah, that's a good answer. This is a legit course. Uni. of Florida golf course, 128 slope and rating of 72.3 from the tips, although I play the second to last tees because we can't play the tips! They want to leave those tees in extra good shape for the Florida Golf team. The second to back tees has a slope of 125 and a rating of pretty much the par, 70.1 I believe. I see your point about it just being another golfing milestone. I'll look at it that way. Congrats on your 68.

The 68 was 3 years ago...have not come close since :cheesy: Maybe someday I will get hot again for just one round......that's was keeps you coming back.

I usually play a par 73 course. . .but its all the same to me. breaking 80 is breaking 80, long as your not on an executive course. :cheesy:

Breaking 80 is breaking 80, on a par 70 there are two less par 5's (I'm assuming, some are weird), which is two less birdie opportunities, so i would say it is the same.

Breaking 80 is breaking 80. Just because it's a par 70 doesn't mean anything. I've played courses where a par 4 was longer than a par 5 on another course.

 

IIRC, of the 4 PGA players to have shot 59, they've all been on a par 72 course.

breaking 80 is usually classed as playing to single figures!

Breaking 80 means anything less than 80. The phrase does not read "breaking 8 over". Shooting in the 70's is an accomplishment the majority of golfers will never get to experience. Don't diminish your score because the course par is 70 and not 72.
