Hold your hand up if you still bag a 2i.

Have two nice Stewart 1 irons - damn they always look nice. However being originally from Texas, I tend to follow the wisdom of my fellow Texan Lee Trevino, "even God can't hit a 1 iron!"

I play mizuno mp h5 2 iron. The 2 ,and 1, have the word Hitogami engraved on them. It means god in human form. Who says the Japanese dont have a sense of humour.

I carry a 2 iron with all of my vintage sets but its really more of a specialty club for me. Mostly its for punch shots. On full shots with clean contact it goes maybe 160-170 in the air (bullet trajectory) and then rolls out another 20-30 yards for a total of 185-200. But getting clean contact with full swing is at best a 50/50 proposition.

A 5 wood for me is much more forgiving distance-wise but a mishit could go 30-40 yards off line (usually left). Mishits with the 2 iron are usually 30-40 yards shorter but still in play. So I usually carry both and let the hole design dictate which one I employ. If I have to carry over water or other hazard then its the 5 wood.

Of all the vintage 2 irons I have played, easily my favorite is the Wilson Turfrider. With its thick sole and low center of gravity I get a much higher launch with it, although with its tiny face I have to make sure I hit down with it and not try to sweep.

My best results with the 2 iron usually come when I choke down a 1/2" or more, play the ball in the middle of my stance, and pretend its a 5 iron. If I play the ball forward and try to sweep it for a higher launch I am inviting disaster. On tight driving holes I'll usually opt for a 4 wood instead of a 2 iron.

Will echo what others have said -- a solidly struck 2 iron is a thing of beauty and wonder, often the most memorable shot of the round if you pull it off.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

I don't but am looking for an old Ping or Callaway 1 or 2 iron for a driving iron into the wind when hybrids balloon.

That IS a problem with those clubs, isn't it? Now that you mention it.

I have three Adams Hybrids and a off brand 5 iron hybrid. All balloon. My 4 woods do not. With a good 3, 4, &5 wood I really see no need for the hybrid.

The 2I is more of a specialty club for me now.
