So two weeks ago we were playing our usual 20 man game and a new player got in the game. Were all between +2 to 5 handicapps and good friends. Anyway, the first thing the new guy said when he introduced himself was "you guys better be ready I'm looking to clean up". I let that go. Then on the range while we were warming up he started to analyze everyones swing and throw his 2 cents in. I started to get annoyed. Then he started to say how with his swing that he has to use XX stiff shafts on every thing, blah, blah, blah. Now he had a good swing and new how to play but I decided to see how mentally strong he was. The first hole is a short par 4 345 yds with a creek right in front of the green so going for it is no option unless you carry the drive 330 yds. So he hit a 3 iron down the middle about 210, good shot. But just to see how he would react I said "you hit that pretty well BUT it doesnt seem youre getting the most out of you shafts". Bingo, fot the next 18 holes all he tried to do with his irons was hit it harder and harder " to get the most out of his shaft". He even would say "I let the shaft out of that one" on every iron shot and he proceeded to airmail every green. He lost $230 the most out of everyone. Now Im not the one to play mind games with any one but was I wrong for what I did.

Perfect, he got what he deserved and you handled it without being rude. You used his own ego against him, the absolute best way to handle people like that. I be he is a lot more humble next time.

No. Not because of how he was acting, but plenty of pro's do the same, its called gamesmanship! You stripe one right down the middle, and just before your playing partner pulls his club, you say to your caddy, " Caddy, I sure hit that one good, but that OB was looking mighty close on that leftside" or after you hit one pin high "Caddy, good call on that one, but it sure must be mighty windy up there, I just barely cleared that front bunker huh" It happens all the time in money games!

I say it was a good move. I have done it before. It just lets you know what kind of person your opponent is. A guy with a strong mental game will not get affected, a guy like you played with will fold like paper.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with gamesmanship in matchplay golf (within reason).

 

There's nothing more satisfying than getting under the skin of people like that.

Is this what you're looking for? You must be extremely competitive and have a bit of a "hollow victory feeling on this one"? Here's why. It's because, for you, it was like shooting ducks in a barrel. No challenge in that. The guy deserved it and he was probably much less annoying for the rest of the round. So... what to do about it. Next time you play in his foursome challenge yourself a bit more. Make discrete side bets with others in the group that the guy will shoot x shots over his front nine on the back nine.

Playing side by side with my Pro (quiet, humble guy) in a team match play.

I shoot 8 over on the first 7 holes and I am down 5. I tell him I'm gonna make it the greatest come back ever and he just smiles.

when i sink my 4' birdie put on 8 he says "wow, you walked that putt right in the hole".

Make birdie on 10, he says "Man, you didn't even think about missing that one did you?".

I didn't notice how shaky my opponents putting had gotten until then.

13 his ball is 1 yd behind my opponenents. He hits 4 iron on the green and says "wow, did i have to swing hard at that one"

needless to say, my opponent swings out of arse and skulls a 3 iron right...

The opponenet is such a wreck, he conceded 16 before I even had to putt.

I was even going into 17 and the guy was a WRECK. Found out we had already lost the team match, so I hit one in the water to lose on purpose...

Otherwise I don't that guy would have ever stepped on a course again!!! Needless to say, I had new found respect for my "humble" pro. LOL
