Crooked Creek & Milton - Were Alphareta Athletic Club

Does anyone have any idea of what is going on out here? Everyone at the club is hush, hush. A few weeks ago I heard that the staff was past due on being paid, then I hear the doors are being closed, then I hear being sold to one of two groups. Then someone told my wife last week that they were building houses on Crooked Creek. Which because of green space requirements in neighbor hoods I find the last one very unlikely.

 

They have moved my sons golf match today from Crooked Creek to Milton, but both are owned by the same company.

 

Does anyone know what is actually happening?

I have heard the same rumors that they are weeks behind on payroll. I have played with several former members that have left and gone to other clubs. They have confirmed the up for sale rumors. Sounds like a bad situation for the members and home owners.

Here is what I know. Traditional Golf Properties which owns Crooked Creek and Milton CC has not been paying their bills and bouncing the paychecks for the employees. Last Tuesday they closed the courses as the employees told Traditional they would not show up until they were paid, which they were. So the courses reopened on Wednesday. Then we got the email that the $40 we paid in February for GSGA membership was never paid to the GSGA. I had to join the GSGA through the PGATSS to keep my GHIN number active. Also I was not able to buy some irons as part of the Mill River plan because the Callaway account was not current. That cost me about $250.

 

The courses are up for sale with two buyers interested (one is Club Corp that I have been told). They have also lost a number of employees because of the financial situation. I am holding on for a month to see what happens. Crooked Creek is just too convenient for where I live to quickly move on.

 

I cannot not see Crooked Creek be sold for home development as the course winds through established homes. But I see Milton as prime for home development as there is a lot of open land plus tennis courts and a pool already there.

I assumed club corp would be interested. I worried what would happen if club corp bought would you be brought in, or would you have to re-join? Crooked Creek was a little out of the way for me, but it was very affordable. I would love to see them offer it as a golf only club and sell Milton for Development. That is part of the reason I am thinking of joining Atlanta National.

I received information on the price for membership to CCR and as a single person that just want to golf, I could not justify it.

 

If you are looking at Atlanta National, you might want to also look at The Manor. I was a member there for a short time when they were hurting for members to help with the cash flow. I love the course and the facilities are great. If things are still unknown about Crooked Creek at the end of July, I will look at rejoining Crystal Falls. For the price I can justify it being a course I can get to only on the weekends.

Crooked Creek is already at the limit from where I live and work, the Manor is even farther out. I had a friend just join the White Columns, Manor and Atlanta National 3 pack deal. I think it is like 730 a month or so. The Manor and White Columns are both higher than Atlanta National. I have a pool and tennis courts in my neighborhood, and would never use either at a golf course unless it was in my neighborhood. I played the Manor with him last Saturday and it tacks on another 10+ minutes or so to my 25 minute drive to crooked creek from home. Atlanta National is closer, Brookfield is even closer but from what I remember that is not a course I want to play every weekend. There seemed to be about 8 good holes out there, and then a bunch of other holes. I looked at CCR and it is more than Atlanta National in monthly, CCR isn't far off from Cherokee Town's monthly dues, and CCR's course(while in better shape than Brookfield) has about as many good holes as Brookfield.

My uncle is a member. Was just there for a visit and played a round at Crooked Creek. Seems to have a lot of potential hopefully someone​ can right the ship.

Club Corp just got bought out for $1.1B. I don't suspect they will be doing any major acquisitions in the near future. Rumors are they will sell off some properties to cover some of the debt they built up in the last few years.

The course condition seems to be going downhill. I have heard all sorts of rumors, but nothing substantial.

I decided to turn in my 30 day notice. I do not expect a quick resolution. I am headed back up to Crystal Falls to join in a couple weeks when I can play again. I just had a radio frequency lesion procedure on my lower back and the doc said not hitting golf balls for two weeks.

I am looking at Atlanta National now. I am officially out at CC. I have heard so many crazy rumors and then with the recent club corp sale, I do not expect anything to happen quickly either and a long slow death spiral it not something I want to witness. Atlanta National will cut almost 10 minutes on my drive time to the course.

Evidently they're scared they'll sully their reputation as a golf company if they turn courses into residential development, so they're selling some courses to developers instead of doing it themselves.

I played Crooked Creek for the Mid Am qualifier and it was in awful shape.

Crooked Creek and Milton are now under the management of Billy Casper Golf. The clubs have been foreclosed upon and the bank brought BCG in to run to clubs and help get things back running properly in order to maximize the values of the clubs.

Driving by Milton golf club recently have seen signs about an acquisition meeting on Monday, 12/4. Does anyone have any details? I saw people on the course today so appears to still be open.

Wow! That was a quick flip. On December 1st, Milton CC was sold to Triumph Golf Management. On December 4th, City of Milton allocated $5 million to buy it from Triumph. I figured it would eventually be sold for home development but City of Milton decided to buy it to into public green space.

 

Last I heard, Crooked Creek Club is still in receivership and managed by Billy Casper Golf.

The original 9 holes are not a bad layout and has actual space and some length to it. The new 9 that they squeezed onto land that could hold maybe 4 holes is a disaster. That said, I haven't been there in about four years, so, who knows what it looks like now. Reading through that pdf posted above, it sounds like the city is just going to turn it into green space rather than continuing to operate as a golf course, but it will be interesting to see what happens with it.

It will be interesting what they do with the pool and tennis courts. I would think it might be good to keep those and make them available to the residents. I agree that it sounds like it will just be turned into a park with trails and green space.
