for real? dear god.

Rolling stone list Smells Like teen Spirit as the 9th greatest rock song of all time

But for anyone growing up in the 90's its #1

The song single handedley killed off all the the awful 80's hair bands and ushered in a whole new era of rock

It brought alternative music to the mainstream

Seriously? I'm trying to think of any 90's bands that were even good. I'd take Whitesnake over Nirvana (somewhat sarcastically) but I hate 90's music. When I think of 90's music it the whole decade sounds like the spin doctors and hootie and the blowfish yuck.

Anything after 92 is garbage. If your under 40 you really didn't experience the 80's.

This post puts a lot of pressure on Boy George, George Michael, and Brett Michaels.

Whoa there. Pearl Jam? GnR? Alice n Chains? STP?

Huge gnr fan that's why I said 92. I think use your illusion came out in 92? I don't get excited to hear any of the songs from the other three they're just decent.

All three are better than 3rd eye blind and candle box.

I hated the Glam rock 80's music

It was all poofy hair and makeup and shallow music

Police

Early U-2

Talking Heads

Cure

Dire Straits

Smiths

Dozens+ more good bands with nothing to do with hair bands in the 80s

Police were formed in the 70s but became popular in the 80s.

U2 was 77 I believe.

Talking Heads were mid 70s I think. First album was titled '77.

The Cure I also think were a 70s band.

Dire Straits was definitely a 70s band.

The Smiths? I think you have an 80s band.

EDIT: excepting the Cure, many of the bands had hits in the 70s, but did not become mega stars until the 80s.

Well, I had to do the same math. The, "How old was I when I listened to..." I had older siblings so I heard a lot of stuff earlier than most kids my age.

As for Dead Solid, I still listen to most of it. Though, I had every Smiths album, but as I moved out of the teen angst and sadness, alas Morrissey was off the playlist.

I think "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney/Beatles is the greatest song ever written.

But I don't know if it qualifies as "rock".

LOL. I was waiting for someone to yell "blasphemy!!" I was being facetious but it's a cool song none the less. Animals as Leaders... Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes are madmen on the extended range guitars...

Tragic news for fans of rock music, Gord Downey of the Tragically Hip passed away last night at 53 following a battle with brain cancer. IMO he's among the best, if not the best, front men of all time.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/gord-downie-obit-1.4359906

If you're unfamiliar have a listen to "New Orleans is Sinking" (Killer Whale Tank version if you already know the studio version) and Ahead by a Century, though they have so many more songs that would be strong entries for this thread.

What an artist, RIP.

For me rock is dead at this time but I still have hope it will come back at some distant time. Greta Van Fleet Highway Tune is OK but not nearly enough to satisfy my hunger. We need a steady diet of Rock, do we not? Besides maybe some Caged the Elephant or Queens of the Stone Age there hasn't been much for me to like in the past 10 years. I keep searching, hoping, waiting. IMO we went through a bad period in the 80's but thank god for the 90's, 70's, 60's and 50's.

As far as picking a greatest song or songs I wouldn't dare do it. Not even a top 10, 20 or even 100. It changes from day to day to whatever suits my needs for that day. It's a constantly changing list that goes from easy listening rock to heavy metal.

Love Zeppelin but every morning and afternoon I have to go through my Spotify queue to remove the abundance of Zeppelin songs in my list. Radio stations burnt me out on Zeps Rock N Roll 25 years ago. If it comes on the radio I immediately change stations.

Try White Stripes. Or The Strokes. Or Trent Reznor (NIN). Smashing Pumpkins. Perfect Circle. Metallica is still okay as well.

I'm not crazy about those groups but they're not bad.

They're not new. I like most of 'em but I'm looking for new blood or at least new good music from some older blood. The new Metallica is only somewhat palatable because the rock scene barely even has a pulse. I was really looking forward to the new Faith No More album but that was 2 years ago and was very mediocre. At this point I would take some older bands where I had never been given a chance to hear them but I'm not sure there are more than a few nuggets out there.

I found The Fratellis Costello Music album a few years ago and really like it but their follow up albums were not nearly as good. If anyone can come up with anything new that I haven't heard of I would be eternally grateful but I don't think it's out there.

I don't know if I can help you there. Lately I've been playing a lot of David Gray, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and even been trying to get into REM since I got a bunch of their CDs out of a dumpster. lol

No, HFB, those names aren't new. I pretty much stated the same thing you did a few pages ago. New modern rock really is almost non-existent. I have been getting new music lately from my local public radio station which plays mainly singer-songwriter type stuff, a lot of which is local (Philly area and mid-atlantic). Some of it is bluesy, some folkey, some country-ey, and some rockish.

But yeah, there is no new rock in modern music. Don't worry, rock, and the rock guitar, will be re-discovered.

XPN? Yeah, listened steadily for a few months and came away with a total of 3 new (to me) songs. 1 was actually a new song and the other 2 were by old artists but songs I had never heard. I just don't like most of the music they play. I like the genres they play but it is mostly stuff where there is a very good reason it never makes it to mainstream radio. MMR is trying to play some new songs but the stuff they are getting is terrible. Can't remember the last time MMR turned me onto a new song or group.

Yeah, XPN, I forgot you're in the Philly area. I like the music they play, but you're right, it's all destined to remain World Cafe and club level stuff. I imagine one of the new songs by old artists is the new one by Robert Plant? It has a cool mid-eastern rhythm and groove.

No, haven't listened to XPN much in the past few months. I got sick of not hearing anything that I considered keepers so now during my morning and end of day commute I am playing audio CD's to learn a new language. It's a better use of my time currently.

I just checked out the new Plant album on Spotify and nothing grabs me by the boo boo if you know what I mean. Thanks for the suggestion though. I don't plan on stopping my search anytime soon.

I saw an interview with Plant a few years ago and he was saying something along the lines of the Zeppelin songs have no meaning (which I took to mean the lyrics). It seems Robert has forgotten that the most important thing about a song (IMO) is that it makes people want to sing along. You can have the worst song with the greatest lyrics ever and it is only worth listening to a handful of times at most. You can have a great song with gibberish lyrics and people will still want to listen to it 50 years later. Combine a great song with great lyrics and it is a bonus.

All this got me thinking. Since there appears to be a severe lack of new songs for people that like Rock how about some suggestions of groups/albums/songs other posters may not have listened to? I can think of some I am pretty sure most have never heard and some that older people may be familiar with but younger people may never have been turned onto. As with anything related to music some people will absolutely hate the stuff but if I give only one poster the gift of a new song/album/group I would consider it a win. I will try working out a quick list sometime today.

You might be averse to him (for various reasons people are averse to him) but Kid Rock has had some solid songs and decent albums in the last decade - if I were to classify any of it I guess I would classify it as "rock" music.

'Rock and Roll Jesus' is still one of my favorite and memorable albums with some seriously great songs on there. It brings back memories of better times in my life when I could still drink booze, had a girlfriend, was in college and had more freedoms/luxuries at hand.

I understand if you don't like him for any particular reason (politics, his old "rap-rock" ways, the fact that he doesn't play many instruments though I know he can play some guitar, or the fact that he had such mainstream/platinum success), but there is some stuff there.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
