where do you end up playing? i recently moved here and have played Muni 3 times (necessity, easy to go to) and broadmoor once. looking to get in a good rotation of practice twice a week and play a round once a week..

Broadmoor is the only adequate practice facility around asheville. Really it’s the only course I like also. Black mountain is nice but far, Reems creek is ok but kinda far. The rest are private or overpriced

Black Mountain is the same distance to me as broadmoor, except broadmoor i have to deal with 26 or Hendersonville Road so depending on the time it could be a lot worse. both of the courses are $20 for walking which is fine. Broadmoor is just an actually nice course, has practice greens (putting and chipping) driving range, although you do have to deal with the highway noise and the planes overhead. It really sucks that there is no good driving range IN asheville, the one at Crowne Plaza is a joke and you cant hit driver, ive heard the practice tee is pretty bad in terms of mats/grass and the price isnt great, and other than that there isnt anything.

Welcome to town. I find that there are many good choices for golf around the greater Asheville area. I play twice a week.

These are the courses in my rotation. I zip all over the mountains to tee it up as playing just one or two courses bores me.

Springdale

Reems Creek

Broadmoor

Etowah Valley

Cummings Cove

Links O' Tryon (down south bit)

Cleghorn (down south a bit)

Grove Park

Muni

Maggie Valley

and on occasion

Black Mountain

Crooked Creek

I have played all 3 C.C.'s as well.

Walnut Cove

Biltmore Forrest

C.C. of Asheville (my favorite)

And it is the sad truth that Broadmoor has the only decent public driving range and practice facility for miles.

no doubt those are the courses within a 40 miles radius. As far as courses within 10-20 minutes, it’s broadmoor, grove, muni, reems, and the private ones.

broadmoor is solid.

grove is overpriced, a silly layout, and 6200 max. And not narrow/difficult enough to make it a fun test imo.

muni is a layout I really like, and sometimes the greens are nicely rolling around 8 or 9. But the millions of ball-marks on the green, or the overall condition, make putting pretty useless. Lift clean and place most days for me, even if the fairway. Place gets a ton of traffic and very little repair, but price is ok.

reems condition usually not great and staff a bit bristly but I have not really been back since I think new owners took over, or old ones started paying attention, or something like that.

As far as the privates, I have experience with cca and Biltmore, and I’m not a fan. For golf, and non golf reasons.

Never been to walnut, the layout looks fun tho.

I've been playing Reems a good bit since the new ownership took over.

It is in much better condition. Yes the the place is run by bristly employees I'll agree, but the course is in fine shape and I love the lay out.

I only play Grove Park when I have a hook up and pay very little. I agree it is a rip off otherwise.

Let me dig up a photo or two from my last round at Reems Creek.

What would the better course be between Broadmoor and Reems Creek?

They are very different so it depends on what you are looking for. Reems is quite a bit tougher with much more elevation change and a handful of blind shots. Broadmoor is very flat and everything is right in front of you. I'd say Reems Creek plays at least 4 -5 shots harder than Broadmoor. If I was visiting Asheville and had to pick one between the two to play, it easily would be Reems. Keep in mind that Reems Creek will tear up an 18 or higher handicap as Broadmoor will not.

First two photos are Broadmoor. Last three are Reems Creek. Hope this helped.

Great info and thank you for the pics.

Is the conditioning at Reems pretty solid now?  It seems there was a time that wasn't the case but sounds like there has been an ownership change.

Yes the turf conditions have greatly improved under the new owners. I have found it consistently fine for over a year now. They charge the most in the AVL at Reems, I think $55 during the week (peak season now) and they offer no senior reduced rate. I think the greens fees are fair.  I only play during the week and it has never been fully packed.  Many of the bunkers were improved course wide also. I live south of downtown but head up to Weaverville to play Reems a couple of times a month. There are also brand new carts that move out nicely, and that's a bonus for that very hilly track. Now I do have plenty of golf buddies that do not like the course, they find it too hard. It's a matter of taste that golf course. It's one of my top 5 in this part of the state. Give it a go and possibly pm me if you enjoyed playing it.

Get rid of the '50s-look knotty pine and spiffy up the golf course . . . you'll have a winner! Did I mention the depressing knotty pine? 😉

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

How is the renovation project coming along? Any photo's you are allowed to share?

So how long will it be until completion?  I am looking forward to you hosting those of us here on the WRX that are Asheville golfers. 😉

Sorry for the delay in an update. Course is really coming along. It is exciting to see it all come together. Front 9 is finishing grow in and hoping to be done in October. Two holes left to shape on the back and we will start to grass. Bias here for sure but I do feel it is going to be something special. Practice facilities have turned out to be better than anything else in the area. We have also assembled an amazing team. Billy Ross has joined us as director of golf from Bulls Bay in Charleston. Happy to answer any other questions.

Short is finished. 5 greens out and then play back in. Upper and lower portion of each green . Multiple tee boxes. Going to be a fun place to start and finish the day. We have a massive putting green with a lot of fun breaks.

Whats the estimate on when everything will be open? Also do you have any pictures to share?
