Best ClubCorp option in Atlanta?

Guys,

 

I'm in Atlanta for meetings next Tuesday morning just north of the Perimeter and have a pretty late flight. So I have time for one round.

 

My thoughts are to go north and play in the later afternoon. Where would you play of the ClubCorp courses? Atlanta National, The Manor, White Columns, CC of the South?

 

Any thoughts? Any insight would be appreciated.

I played the Manor two weeks ago and it was in Great Shape Atlanta National and White Columns less so. Manor, White Columns, and Atlanta National all are Bent, so no punched greens. The Manor is the easiest of the three but was in the best shape of the three. Atlanta National is my favorite layout of the three and the hardest test as well.

Atlanta National is co-hosting the US mid am pretty soon.

 

White columns/manor are both in great shape as well. I play all 3 on the regular. If it were me, I'd play manor.

Atlanta National is under going repairs in preparation for USGA Mid Am so not in the best shape right now. I am a White Columns member and highly recommend our course. The Manor is just as good right now. Both will be doing aerofication soon, about 3rd week of August. Country Club of the South is also a good option and closet to the airport. I recommend Echelon if you are looking for a real challenge, not Club Corp.

 

Manor and National are closed on Tuesdays. I know on the 15th Manor is hosting GSGA member play day with shotgun at 9am, otherwise closed. White Columns and CC of South are closed on Mondays, calendars show clear on the 15th.

Does anyone happen to know the membership dues at CCOS? Never realized it was ClubCorp until now.

They vary from club to club. Mine at WC was $10k and $650/mo plus cart. You will have to call the club and talk to the membership coordinator to find out. They run specials from time to time depending on time of year. It may not be a good time to join any Club Corp properties. With the Apollo buyout, we hear many properties are up for sale. LBO firm looking to make fast buck on real estate values.

Epic men's locker room.

 

It's bent as well. Nice layout, not long, but challenging holes. 18 is cool to finish right in front of the clubhouse and locker room patio.

Id play Manor because it is easily in the best shape. Atlanta National is nice but can be a bit tricky at times.

We had a good day out at CC of the South.

 

It was about what I expected from a mid-80s Nicklaus design - lots of uphill approaches, a few kind of tricky greens, but solid golf. It isn't easy and I didn't dig the blind hazard on the second par 5 on the back. That's probably the only really bad hole on the course.

 

I'd certainly play it again and wouldn't hesitate recommending it.

 

Agreed that the locker room/men's grill is cool.

Greens are always great and running quick. Other than that, I don't like the layout at all. Think it sucks quite frankly.

 

I've played it 15-20 times and some holes are just downright stupid. Forcing you to layup, hit certain clubs, etc.

Did White Columns punch the greens last week? They didn't have anything on the website calendar.

 

Playing one round on 9/6, The Manor and CC of the South are both closed that day for aerification. Atlanta National punched on 8/22. Couldn't find anything on the other north side courses' websites.

 

Anywhere else I should be looking? I will have plenty of time after my meeting before a flight. Polo? Brookfield? Chapel Hills? Bentwater is actually the closest to where I'll be.

Polo and Brookfield both bent grass and probably aerating after Labor day. Don't recommend Bentwater, bad shape when I played there 6 weeks ago. CCofSouth and Bears Best aerating 9/5. The public courses have bermuda greens and should be open, Windermere, Olde Atlanta, Eagle Watch.

Olde ATL, Windermere and Eagle Watch are not public. They are just so busy all the time it feels that way.

 

I had to play Olde ATL (tourney at my home club) on Saturday and they punched the Bermuda a week before, so it's been two weeks They were quite sandy.

Made a tee time at Mirror Lake Mountain Course. They're not punching until the 11th, so should be in good shape.

 

edit: the Clubline was very helpful in finding out the dates the greens would be punched. Sent them an email with a few courses and they got back to me in a couple of hours with the dates the greens were/will be done. Really convenient.

I'm at polo.

 

We are aerating 9/11-12. Honestly, they need to be punched now. Chewed up, not the best I've seen them but in average/good condition.

Weather just changed from 60's to 40's and 50's. Courses wet from recent rains. Bermuda greens dormant, firm and limited by morning frost. I am at White Columns, bent grass greens good and course in good shape. The Manor should also be in good condition. I played 10 rounds in November and now switching to my training program. Don't play when I can't keep my hands warm.

Coin flip. 2 days ago it was 65 and sunny. Today it's snowing.

 

Weather looks like mid 50's for the next few weeks.
